(FROM THE ARTICLE: The great Chicago author and historian Studs Terkel once wrote this about work: “It is about a search, too, for daily meaning as well as daily bread, for recognition as well as cash, for astonishment rather than torpor; in short, for a life rather than a Monday through Friday sort of dying.” That quote looms large over a new multimedia exhibit at the Harold Washington Library Center in Chicago. The collection of photos of people with different types of jobs, accompanied by stories of what they do and why they do it, is called “Working in America,” and it does what artistic endeavors should do: It makes you think.)

http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20160914/news/160918679/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: So why is middle-school teacher Mark Fratella, a Republican, giving a pro-Trump speech to Greek-American community leaders at a banquet hall in Addison? . . . “Obviously it’s a blue state — but you never know what to expect,” said Fratella, a Trump delegate at the July Republican National Convention. “This could be the year we turn it red. Chicago will be a real tough nut to crack, but we have very strong support in the collar counties. We’re really targeting them.” . . . Fratella thinks Trump’s immigration position boils down to a stronger border and tighter national security, for example, keeping track of foreigners who overstay their visas. “I don’t view his stance on many of these things as hateful or bigoted. … A lot of it is just pragmatic,” said Fratella, who has met Trump several times. He grew up in the Detroit suburbs where his autoworker father kept a picture of JFK on the wall. But the rise of another political icon, Republican Ronald Reagan, captured the allegiance of the younger Fratella. His first presidential campaign was U.S. Sen. Bob Dold’s in 1996, and he’s volunteered for every one since. Fratella eventually moved to Elmhurst and linked up with the formidable Addison Township GOP organization. “We have a very strong network of volunteers,” said Fratella, who stumped for Trump at a United Hellenic Voters of America event last week. “We’ve got our own campaign. We don’t necessarily need the infrastructure of a Kirk to help us out.” . . . Fratella is looking for synergies with Republicans who backed candidates other than Trump, who is expected in Bolingbrook for a fundraiser Wednesday. “We are all on board to prevent Hillary from winning. We can all get behind that regardless of where we started.”)

If I had become a Democrat, my Democrat superiors in the federal government would not have taken the following adverse actions against me: a) my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, they did not promote me beyond GS-13, they kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and they forced me to take an $18,459 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980, b) my Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, they disallowed my education deductions, and they disallowed my partial day per diem claims, and c) my Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests.)

— Your Local 1-Percenters May Not Be as Rich as You Think – ROBERT FRANK and KARL RUSSELL (DIERSEN: Who has hinted/implied/argued/shouted that you are a 1-percenter? I should write a book about my envy-filled critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes who have hinted/implied/argued/shouted that I am a 1-percenter. They are all anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors. They stress the new cars, the real estate, the collector cars, etc. that I have bought. They stress all the money that I paid for college tuition. They stress that I could afford to take an $18,459 (21%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer between federal agencies in 1980. They stress that I could never have been a 1-percenter a) if I had not avoided the draft and b) if my wife and I had not given up trying to have children, if we had adopted, or if we had become foster parents.)
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/25/business/your-local-1-percenters-may-not-be-as-rich-as-you-think.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: At the Democratic National Convention this summer, Hillary Clinton said 1-percenters were due for a tax increase. “This is not because we resent success,” she said. “But when more than 90 percent of the gains have gone to the top 1 percent, that’s where the money is.” But defining America’s 1 percent — and finding out “where the money is” — has become an increasingly subjective endeavor. As wealth becomes more concentrated in certain states and even counties, the gap between the national 1 percent and the local 1 percent is growing, creating wealth clusters that are pulling away from the rest of the country. To be in the top 1 percent of incomes nationally, families need to take in a minimum of $389,436. The average income of America’s 1-percenters is $1,153,293, according to a recent study by the Economic Policy Institute. Yet when incomes are measured state by state, the study shows wildly diverging fortunes for 1-percenters. One-percenters in the New York metro area (which includes parts of New Jersey and Pennsylvania) earn at least $673,000. Those in the Bridgeport-Stamford, Conn., area make at least $1.4 million. Both are eclipsed by the 1-percenters of Jackson, Wyo., who earn at least $1.7 million. Why Jackson? Billionaires have been flocking to Wyoming, attracted by its outdoor lifestyle and low taxes. Teton County, Wyo., is the richest in America when it comes to 1 percent incomes, with 1-percenters earning more than $2.2 million. New York County, or Manhattan, ranks second, with a $1.44 million threshold, followed by Fairfield County, Conn., with just under $1.4 million. The tech boom has helped the 1 percent in San Mateo County and Marin County, Calif., where they earn at least $1.1 million. By contrast, you need only $97,000 to be a 1-percenter in Holmes County, Miss., or Lamar County, Ala., or $108,000 in Grayson County, Va. “All high incomes are going up, but they’re going up much faster in places like New York, Maryland and California,” said Mark Price, a labor economist at the Keystone Research Center and co-author of the Economic Policy Institute study. It’s no surprise that the most expensive states have the highest incomes at the top. And wealth, by nature, has always been relative. Yet economists and wealth experts say the economic distance between 1-percenters in rich states and the 1-percenters in middling or even affluent states has widened drastically, creating a new national landscape of the 1 percent.)
