(FROM THE ARTICLE: Wheaton held a memorial Friday to honor residents who perished during and after the Sept. 11 attacks. The names of former Wheaton residents killed in the World Trade Center and United Airlines Flight 93 were read aloud. “We honor and remember Susan Sauer, Mark Schurmeier, Todd Beamer,” said David Iglesias. Todd Beamer led a group of flight attendants and passengers in an attempt to take control of United Airlines Flight 93’s cockpit from four hijackers. Believed to be headed toward Washington D.C, the plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. “Our fire department does honor Todd Beamer with some of his last words on Flight 93 with one of our station mottos of, ‘Let’s roll,’” Wheaton Fire Department Chief Robert Brill said. After the attacks, five Wheaton residents in the armed forces made the ultimate sacrifice. “United States Marine Corps Lance Corporal Nicholas Larson, United States Army Captain Kevin Landeck, United States Army Staff Sergeant Robert Miller, United States Marine Corps Lance Corporal Kevin Oratowski and United States Army Specialist Samuel Watts,” Mayor Phillip Suess read. Wheaton’s police chief says that of the roughly 70 officers on the force today, many were not even alive 25 years ago. He says only four of them were serving on 9/11/2001.)
