(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Crete Police Department has petitioned the Will County state’s attorney’s office for charges against 20 juveniles involved in a series of fights at Crete-Monee High School on May 12, Chief Scott Pieritz said in a news release Thursday. That day, “Crete-Monee High School had multiple fights occur which resulted in a chaotic, dangerous environment. This played out on social media, with videos being shared and causing community uproar and disharmony,” Pieritz said in the release. He said the 20 juveniles would be petitioned for “crimes including disorderly conduct, battery, and mob action.” Pieritz said recent “teen takeover” occurrences showed it was important to arrest and prosecute juvenile offenders in similar incidents. Most recently, one such gathering in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood over Memorial Day weekend led to dozens of arrests and a shooting that wounded three, according to Chicago police. “We have all seen the “teen takeover” mobs occurring around the country,” Pieritz said. “We cannot and will not allow that mentality to take root in our town.” Pieritz also released a letter addressed to the Will County state’s attorney’s office, urging that charges be filed due to the severity of the May 12 chaos. “I find it necessary to write this letter due to the seriousness of this incident, the public safety concern for all students and staff of the Crete-Monee High School, a deterrent against future violent and disruptive acts, and for the retention of public confidence in the police department restoring order in the school,” Pieritz wrote to the state’s attorney’s office. A security guard was injured and went to the hospital, Pieritz said, and misinformation was spread widely on social media, including claims that weapons were present and that a student had been thrown over a balcony. “This caused a frenzy of responses on social media including those questioning the safety of students in Crete schools, disparaging remarks about the school administration, village of Crete, and police department,” Pieritz said. The state’s attorney’s office said in a statement that the case is currently being processed, and that it has not yet received materials for review. “We have a strong and longstanding working relationship with the Village of Crete Department of Police and Chief Pieritz,” the state’s attorney’s office said in its statement. “As with any case, we will conduct an independent review of the facts, evidence, and applicable law once the matter is formally presented to us.” It would be inappropriate to comment further until that review is complete, the state’s attorney’s office said. I should have majored in accounting from the beginning. I was able to earn a college degree because I took college preparatory courses at Crete-Monee High School, got an ACT score of 24, graduated in the upper 20% of my class, and got accepted by UIC in 1966 and then by NIU in 1969. I was able to pay for my UIC and NIU expenses by working for 25 months part-time and for 9 months full-time during three summers delivering mail for the Park Forest Post Office. I lived with my parents in their Crete home for 31 months and at NIU for 16 months. I graduated debt-free with a bachelor’s degree in management and owning a 1969 Dodge Charger SE in August of 1970 even though I was not viewed as being college material.

— The Milton Township Highway Department has a proposed levy on the March 17, 2026 ballot for a 3.5%, $2.2 million levy for the purposes of constructing an additional building for truck storage. That would include new offices, a lunchroom and conference room. Highway commission management have stated that the existing truck storage building will remain to be used for “dry storage.” The other two existing buildings that house equipment maintenance, offices and storage are in good condition. The Highway Department has spent over $24,000 for flyers promoting this tax increase and made presentations saying that this tax increase is only for two years. This is absolutely false as the proposition on the ballot as written is for a permanent tax increase. In addition, the proposed cost of this project has no detailed scope of work, no cost basis due to no engineering or architectural drawings, no bids, no site assessment for stormwater mitigation and no construction schedule. You could not get a loan from a bank for a commercial building without providing this information. Why should the tax payers as the “bank” deserve anything less? The highway department has estimated the cost of this project by a simple ratio size comparison to a proposed but never built storage building that DuPage County was considering building in 2022. Cost of construction has increased in four years due to inflation and cost of material and labor. I strongly encourage the taxpayers to vote “no” on this proposed tax increase.
