The two homes, located immediately west of the Chicago Golf Club, occupy historic ground. Together, they sit on the 3.4-acre site that once held a rambling mansion called Overlinks, which had been designed by architect Jarvis Hunt and built in 1897 for Chicago Golf Club member and influential Chicago Board of Trade member Edward S. Worthington. Overlinks was demolished around 1990, and soon afterward, longtime homebuilder Harold “Mac” Airhart, who died on April 16 at age 86, subdivided the land and constructed the two mansions, one of which became Airhart’s own personal home. Airhart, a Wheaton College alumnus and a longtime Wheaton College trustee, in 1964 founded Airhart Construction, which now has constructed more than 1,800 homes. Even before Airhart’s passing, he and his wife, Vonla, had one of the two homes, their own, five-bedroom, 5,794-square-foot Georgian-style home, on the market. It’s available for $2.4 million. Situated on 1.61 acres, the Airhart mansion has 4 1/2 bathrooms, a grand foyer, soaring ceilings, millwork, a great room with a fireplace, an adjacent octagon-shaped sunroom with floor-to-ceiling windows, a library with custom built-ins and architectural molding and a kitchen with granite countertops, newer appliances and two pantries. Other features include a primary bedroom suite with a walk-in wardrobe and a finished walkout lower level. Outside on the property are hosta beds, mature trees, a three-car garage and a 60-foot-by-60-foot motor court. “This is a fabulous house and 1.6-acre lot,” listing agent Pattie Murray of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices told Elite Street. “It has such grandeur. With 10,000 square feet of total space including the lower level, the Grey Walls mansion in Wheaton has five full bathrooms, two half bathrooms, two fireplaces, a dual stair entry, an oversize dining room, a mahogany library with custom built-ins and a limestone fireplace, a great room with a coffered ceiling, a sunroom and a kitchen with hand-crafted William Huber cabinetry, granite countertops, Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances and a walk-in pantry. (FROM THE ARTICLE: President Trump has issued an executive order turning an estimated 8,000 federal workers into at-will employees, which means the government could fire them without providing any reason. The move culminates an effort Trump launched during his first term to strip vast numbers of federal employees of civil service protections designed to insulate their work from political interference. Nearly all of the 8,000 people affected are at the highest level of the civil service, known as GS-15. The Trump administration characterizes the roles as senior positions with significant influence over policy. They include leaders of policy offices and their chiefs of staff, heads of regional offices, program managers, senior public affairs officers and those overseeing spending and grants. The number of positions affected by Wednesday’s executive order is smaller than many anticipated. Originally, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) estimated some 50,000 positions could be reclassified. The administration has not ruled out expanding the pool at a later time. Tripling the number of at-will employees. The federal government currently has about 4,000 political appointees who serve at the pleasure of the president. Until now, the rest of the workforce of approximately 2 million people could only be fired for certain reasons, such as inadequate performance or misconduct. That day, “Crete-Monee High School had multiple fights occur which resulted in a chaotic, dangerous environment. This played out on social media, with videos being shared and causing community uproar and disharmony,” Pieritz said in the release. He said the 20 juveniles would be petitioned for “crimes including disorderly conduct, battery, and mob action.” Pieritz said recent “teen takeover” occurrences showed it was important to arrest and prosecute juvenile offenders in similar incidents. Most recently, one such gathering in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood over Memorial Day weekend led to dozens of arrests and a shooting that wounded three, according to Chicago police. “We have all seen the “teen takeover” mobs occurring around the country,” Pieritz said. “We cannot and will not allow that mentality to take root in our town.” Pieritz also released a letter addressed to the Will County state’s attorney’s office, urging that charges be filed due to the severity of the May 12 chaos. “I find it necessary to write this letter due to the seriousness of this incident, the public safety concern for all students and staff of the Crete-Monee High School, a deterrent against future violent and disruptive acts, and for the retention of public confidence in the police department restoring order in the school,” Pieritz wrote to the state’s attorney’s office. A security guard was injured and went to the hospital, Pieritz said, and misinformation was spread widely on social media, including claims that weapons were present and that a student had been thrown over a balcony. “This caused a frenzy of responses on social media including those questioning the safety of students in Crete schools, disparaging remarks about the school administration, village of Crete, and police department,” Pieritz said. The state’s attorney’s office said in a statement that the case is currently being processed, and that it has not yet received materials for review. “We have a strong and longstanding working relationship with the Village of Crete Department of Police and Chief Pieritz,” the state’s attorney’s office said in its statement. “As with any case, we will conduct an independent review of the facts, evidence, and applicable law once the matter is formally presented to us.” It would be inappropriate to comment further until that review is complete, the state’s attorney’s office said.
