They knew that my wife would give me even more reasons for living and even more motivation a) to pass the CPA examination on my first attempt like I did in 1979, b) earn a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul like I did in 1980, c) pass the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt like I did in 1981, and d) become a licensed CPA like I did in 1981. AMERICAN THINKER
— The plight of the unwoke – Lynne Lechter (DIERSEN: My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes paint themselves as being very woke. I should write a book about them. They paint me as being someone who has unfairly benefitted from my being White, male, Missouri Synod Lutheran, German American, conservative, Republican, American, raised in Crete, raised by a stay-at-home mother, having good health, having ancestors who have been in America for a long time, earning college degrees, earning professional certifications, earning a professional license, working for the federal government for almost 30 years, getting married, and not having children.)
https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2020/01/the_plight_of_the_unwoke.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Urban slang defines a person being “woke” or “wokeness” as someone being cognizant of “social justice.” Social justice, in this worldview, encompasses racism, feminism, gender fluidity, inequality, and “undocumented visitors” (illegal aliens). The very word connotes a superior state of being in which any opposing opinion is perceived as a personal affront, or even attack, and triggers the necessity for safe spaces. Opposing viewpoints are bludgeoned on college campuses and in the mainstream media as racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, gun-toting, and Bible-thumping idiocies. Oh, the elitism — and blindness! The woke are really the unwoke — those with no sense of self-awareness of the hypocritical and self-aggrandizing images they actually project to the rest of us. Examples abound.)

TOWNHALL
— NowThis Isn’t Journalism – Adam Guillette
https://townhall.com/columnists/adamguillette/2020/01/18/now-this-isnt-journalism-n2559692
(FROM THE ARTICLE: NowThis and its allies are so desperate to smear President Donald Trump that they’re resorting to lies about the Holocaust. In one of the outlet’s latest propaganda pieces, NowThis sat down with a radical leftwing group of campus Jews and Palestinians and gave them an opportunity to promote their extremist views. While it’s nice to see Jews and Arabs sitting together in peace, the bloom comes off the rose when we learn that they have only come together to promote lies and hate. Perhaps the biggest lie perpetuated in the video occurred when one member of the group compared the plight of immigrants on the American border to that of Anne Frank.)

HOT AIR

— After Stretch IRAs, What Retirement Breaks Could Congress Chop Next? A handful of proposals on limiting retirement tax breaks have been circulating in Washington for years – Laura Saunders
https://www.wsj.com/articles/after-stretch-iras-what-retirement-breaks-could-congress-chop-next-11579257004
(FROM THE ARTICLE: • Require annual payouts from Roth IRAs. Current law requires annual withdrawals from traditional IRAs for savers who are age 72 and older, but it doesn’t require them for Roth IRA owners. Ed Slott, an IRA specialist and certified public accountant, says this proposal would take away one of the biggest draws of a Roth IRA, which is payout flexibility. He also worries that it could open the door to indirect taxes, in the same way that tax-free municipal-bond income is included when calculating Social Security taxes and Medicare premiums.)

GOP primary for legislature, a candidate’s criminal past becomes an issue – Laura Vozzella (DIERSEN: Needless-to-say, candidates should fully disclose all the skeletons that they have in their closets BEFORE they enter primaries. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Former Stafford County supervisor Paul Milde, who is challenging Del. Robert M. Thomas Jr. in Tuesday’s Republican primary, has a criminal record that hasn’t stopped voters from electing him three times in the past. But it has emerged as an issue in the hotly contested race between Milde and Thomas in the 28th District, which includes parts of Fredericksburg and Stafford County. In 1986, when he was 18, Milde was convicted of possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute — a felony — in Prince William County. He was sentenced to six years in prison, with five years suspended. Nine years later, Milde pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact to an attempted burglary in Fairfax County — a misdemeanor for which he was sentenced to 360 days, all but 20 suspended. . .Milde has responded with a flier with a photo of a skeleton looming behind a rack of dress shirts. “Bob Thomas says I have skeletons in my closet,” it begins. In it, he explains his cocaine conviction, though not the burglary. He suggests voters should care more about recent behavior, including Thomas’s decision in early 2018 to vote with Democrats to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. Thomas had run for office on a pledge to oppose expansion.)

I earned a master’s degree in financial markets and trading from IIT in 1997 when I was 48 years old. I passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979 when I was 30 years old. I earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976 when I was 27 years old. I earned a bachelor’s degree in management from NIU in 1970 when I was 21 years old.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: First, set a big career goal for 2020. Maybe you want new responsibilities, a promotion, to double sales, or whatever. But then, after you set that goal, ask yourself, “What new skills am I going to have to learn in order to achieve my big goal?” If you can’t identify any new skills that you’ll need to learn, then you’ve just discovered that your goal needs to be more difficult. Forcing yourself to learn new skills sounds like a pretty obvious task. But our study called “If Employees Aren’t Learning, You’re Not Leading” discovered that only 35% of employees say that they’re Always learning something new at work. Meanwhile, 52% of employees are Never, Occasionally or Rarely learning new things. And as bad as it is that most employees aren’t actually learning new skills at work each year, the situation is even worse: Employees who are always learning new things are 10 times more likely to be inspired than those who are not. Not only does learning new skills keep our careers progressing, it also significantly increases our fulfillment and inspiration on the job. And as you can see in the chart below from the study, the more we increase our learning on the job, the more inspired we become.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The data in the table show that on many, many measures of: a) educational, behavioral and mental health outcomes, b) alcohol, drug addiction, and drug overdoses, c) suicide, murder, violent crimes, and incarceration, d) job fatalities and e) homelessness, boys and men are faring much worse than girls and women. And yet despite the fact that boys and men are at so much greater risk than girls and women on so many different measures, those significant gender disparities that disproportionately and adversely affect men get almost no attention. In fact, it’s girls and women who get a disproportionate amount of attention, resources, and financial support, including: 1. There are women’s centers and women’s commissions on almost every college campus in the country, but not a single men’s center or commission that I’m aware of. 2. In higher education, there is a significant and disproportionate number of sex-specific scholarships, fellowships, awards, initiatives, etc. for female students and faculty. Many of those single-sex, female-only programs are currently being challenged with Title IX complaints to the Office for Civil Rights.)

THE HILL
— Why taxpayers should support expanding the GAO – GARRETT JOHNSON AND M. ANTHONY MILLS (DIERSEN: Needless-to-say, I have always supported/promoted GAO’s mission. GAO audits IRS. In 1980, when I was 31 years old, after having worked for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $82,579-$93,592/year, I took a $19,568/year pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer to GAO. But the Democrats who ran GAO wasted the knowledge of IRS, wasted my career, forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, and kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO. They wasted what I learned earning an MBA from Loyola in 1976, passing the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979, earning a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980, passing the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981, and earning a master’s degree in financial markets and trading from IIT in 1997. They would not have done that if I had been a Democrat, a minority, a female, and/or a veteran.)
https://thehill.com/opinion/finance/476007-why-taxpayers-should-support-expanding-the-gao
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Congress approved $1.4 trillion in new spending last week to avoid another government shutdown over the holidays. Taxpayers are right to be wary whenever Congress pulls out its checkbook. But when it comes to one important line-item, budget hawks should be rooting for more funding, not less. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) serves as Congress’s watchdog and plays a critical role in holding the federal government accountable to the American people. In November, the comptroller general issued the annual Performance and Accountability Report for FY2019, which found that GAO’s work, “yielded a record $214.7 billion in financial benefits — a return of about $338 for every dollar invested in GAO.” Congress has provided $630 million in new funding for GAO — a $40 million increase. This new spending will help support the comptroller general’s efforts to modernize oversight and improve Congress’s ability to anticipate and address critical challenges. Since 2014, GAO’s work has produced $340 billion in savings and more than 6,400 improvements in program and operational improvements across the government, according to the comptroller general’s February testimony before Congress. In addition to its traditional auditing work, GAO recently established a science, technology, assessment, and analytics (STAA) team. The STAA team is focused on enhancing Congress’s capacity to assess emerging technologies, auditing federal science and technology programs, and using advanced analytics to improve auditing.)

— Why states must address pension reform now, before it’s too late Under-funded state pension obligations threaten fiscal solvency, depriving others of needed resources – Keith Greinet and Seth Grove
https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2019/dec/25/why-states-must-address-pension-reform-now-before-/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Public employee pension payments in states like California, New York and Illinois run so large and so generous they continually threaten a massive reordering of spending priorities not to mention default. No one wants to see any state go hat in hand to the feds for pension bailout, especially since it will be impossible to say “No” after the first one is granted. So now, when the money is coming in, is the time for a fix. . . As the Government Accountability Office explained in testimony to the Joint Economic Committee, “The Pension Protection Act of 2006 provided that large private-sector pension plans will be considered at risk of defaulting on their liabilities if they have less than 80 percent funding ratios.”)

I had passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979. I had almost completed the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul. I had earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976. GAO audits IRS. In 1980, if I had been a Democrat, minority, and/or female, the Democrats who ran GAO would have transferred me in as a GS-13 Step 1, currently $98,198/year. Instead, disgustingly, outrageously, the Democrats who ran GAO forced me to take a $19,568/year (21%) pay cut to transfer in, a downgrade to GS-9 Step 10, currently $74,024/year. If I had been a Democrat, minority, and/or female, the Democrats who ran GAO would have immediately assigned me to audits of IRS, but disgustingly, outrageously, and wastefully, the Democrats who ran GAO did not assign me to audits of IRS for 6 years and did not promote me to GS-13 for 6 years. And they might not have done that if I had not earned a master’s degree in accounting in 1980, passed the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981, and became a licensed CPA in 1981.)
https://www.fedweek.com/fedweek/opm-proposes-broadening-reinstatement-eligibility/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: OPM wants to broaden reinstatement eligibility of those who leave federal employment and then are seeking to return to the government by allowing them to come back at a higher grade than the one they left. Proposed rules would give agencies “greater flexibility in recruiting back to government service former federal employees who have developed enhanced or higher-level skill-sets than they had when they left government. Individuals seeking to rejoin the federal workforce may do so more easily and at grade levels commensurate with the skills and experience they actually possess (and be compensated at such grade levels),” says a December 26 Federal Register notice.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: This year it became “OK” to be ageist. It became acceptable to digitally flick off your elders or young’uns on social media, to respond “OK boomer” or “OK millennial,” when, in truth, the people being addressed were often far from okay. . .While many people — though certainly not all — try to be more sensitive about race, orientation and heritage, ageist tropes ran rampant. “Age-based prejudice is the last acceptable form of prejudice,” says New York University’s Michael North, who studies ageism in the workplace. “People are making age-based generalizations and stereotypes that you wouldn’t be able to get away with about race or background. Insert some sort of racial or ethnic group, or ‘OK Woman,’ and it wouldn’t go over too well.”)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— FRONT PAGE TOP OF FOLD: Thinking of buying pot in Illinois on Jan. 1? Here’s how experts say it could affect your health — for better and for worse – Robert McCoppin (DIERSEN: Overwhelmingly, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes talk and/or act like they have smoked pot, are smoking pot, want to smoke pot, want all restrictions on smoking pot to be abolished, want to make money selling pot, and/or want governments to take in lots of tax revenue from the sale of pot.)
https://www.chicagotribune.com/marijuana/illinois/ct-marijuana-illinois-health-effects-20191224-j2qafgizjbe5vibxrajgw7c6kq-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: As an emergency room physician, Dr. Steven Aks has treated patients suffering psychotic delusions from marijuana. He’s been consulted when children come in agitated or sleepy after eating their parents’ weed-laced gummies or cookies. And he’s seen daily smokers coming down with cannabis hyperemesis syndrome — uncontrollable waves of vomiting. “They just keep retching and retching,” he said. “It’s horrible.” Aks, the director of toxicology at Stroger Hospital, expects a surge in overdose cases once recreational cannabis is legalized in the state starting Jan. 1, 2020. Legalization has intensified the debate about the health effects of pot. Despite medical marijuana’s ability to help some patients and the belief that recreational use is safer than other drugs, pot is associated with a number of serious harmful effects, often depending on how it’s used. In Illinois, all dispensaries must post signs stating, “Cannabis consumption can impair cognition and driving, is for adult use only, may be habit forming, and should not be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women.” While some expectant mothers use marijuana for morning sickness, research shows that babies exposed to cannabis in the womb tend to have lower birth weights, like those exposed to cigarettes. The U.S. Surgeon General and American Academy of Pediatrics also warn pregnant and breastfeeding mothers against using cannabis, noting that the psychoactive component, THC, can get into the brain of a fetus and into breast milk. More generally, while cannabis is typically used to get high and relax, for some users it may produce paranoia and delusions. It impairs learning, memory, movement and judgment. Long-term use can lead to chronic coughing and bronchitis. Conversely, one study found it can improve lung capacity, perhaps by smokers taking and holding deep breaths. . .Most broadly, the National Institute on Drug Abuse reported, those who frequently use large amounts of marijuana are more likely to have lower life satisfaction, poorer mental and physical health, and more relationship problems. Heavy marijuana use has also been linked to increased incidence of schizophrenia, though it’s not known if it causes the condition. It’s unlikely that someone would get high or fail a drug test from secondhand smoke, the National Institute on Drug Abuse reported, though it could adversely affect children and people with asthma. As with tobacco and alcohol, those who use marijuana are more likely to take other drugs, and rodents exposed to THC show more addictive behaviors. That doesn’t prove it’s a gateway drug. Most people who use it don’t go on to harder drugs, and users could be more likely to seek other drugs in the first place. Some argue that where marijuana is prohibited, illegal dealers expose buyers to other illicit drugs. As for the stereotype of stoners being unmotivated, studies have yielded mixed results, but one study found that people who smoke marijuana regularly had reduced levels of dopamine, the brain’s motivational reward system. Finally, about 10% of marijuana users develop a substance use disorder, in which they continue using despite it causing significant problems in their lives. Abuse is more common among those who start before age 18, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Paul Armentano, deputy director of NORML, which led the fight to legalize pot, said many of those studies only show a correlation between cannabis use and other problems, not causation. People with mental health problems, for instance, are more likely to use intoxicants, but that doesn’t mean that weed or booze caused their problems.)
