When I graduated from NIU with a bachelor’s degree in management when I was 21 in 1970, potential employers saw me as being draft bait. They did not believe that my application for a financial hardship draft deferment to help support my mother and brother would be approved. Further, potential employers were under tremendous pressure to hire minorities and females. Consequently, I accepted the only job offer that I got, to be the Retail Sales Manager in a Firestone Store, a job that did not really require a college degree. Because my future there was bleak, I accepted a job offer from Oldsmobile in 1971. But Oldsmobile withdrew that offer saying it had just agreed to stop hiring Whites to settle an EEOC complaint. I had taken and passed the Federal Service Entrance Examination while I was a NIU student as a backup because I knew that private sector employers look down on federal employees and I had been a federal employee for almost 3 years.

One of the reasons why I transferred to GAO in 1980 was the unpopularity of IRS employees. Deportation at this scale requires an enormous amount of resources and mundane work. It requires planes and pilots, buses and drivers, mechanics, holding facilities, and medical staff. It requires bureaucratic records and competent administration. Somebody has to do all of it. Every immigration officer focused on solving one of those problems is an officer not available for enforcement. . .Immigration officers would remain responsible for the majority of traditional arrests and enforcement decisions. But the Corps would take on civilian support duties, a subset of which would involve contact with potentially dangerous illegal aliens. Even the simple act of driving illegal aliens from a staging area to the airport would entail risk, given the high number of illegal aliens with additional criminal records. (FROM THE ARTICLE: GOP voters want enforcement. Employers want unlimited cheap labor. The party keeps pretending it can satisfy both without choosing which interest comes first. Eleven years after Donald Trump’s rise, the Republican Party still has not broken with the business interests that depend on cheap, abundant migrant labor. A handful of conservatives want to shut off the employment spigot and reduce both illegal and legal immigration. But too much of the party remains willing to protect longtime illegal workers in agriculture, expand guest-worker programs, or legalize workers already here when employers insist they cannot operate without them. That’s the real fault line. Almost every Republican says border chaos is bad. The harder test comes when immigration enforcement raises labor costs for industries dependent upon a large foreign workforce. When a party’s voters and its governing class want fundamentally different things on a defining issue, eventually the contradiction must break somewhere. For years, Republicans have talked about focusing deportations on criminal aliens while treating workers in agriculture, hospitality, and other favored industries differently. That approach leaves the cheap labor pipeline largely intact. If employers can continue hiring illegal labor with little consequence, the incentive to come and remain does not disappear. Republicans simply won’t protect our nation’s sovereignty. Instead, they build up a false dichotomy that points to one solution: amnesty. Senator Jim Justice (R-W.Va.) made the tension explicit last month. He told Politico that ICE can get “carried away” and questioned “dragging people away that have lived on your street corner for 15 years.” He later issued a statement saying he supports Trump’s immigration strategy “full stop,” while emphasizing the removal of dangerous criminals.

In 2025, CCSO did not transfer a single alien to ICE based off an immigration detainer, even though the agency received detainers for aliens charged with crimes ranging from driving under the influence, assault, retail theft, child endangerment, and aggravated assault with a rifle. Chicago’s sanctuary policies have allowed criminal aliens to reoffend and commit violent crimes after being released onto Illinois streets. When I was 19 in 1968, my Democrat Post Office superiors came to realize that I would never become a Democrat. To get rid of me, they disallowed my sick leave requests in 1968 and 1969 and forced me to resign in 1969. When I was 25 in 1974, my Democrat IRS superiors came to realize that I would never become a Democrat. To get rid of me, they got rid of the IRS manager who had promoted me in 1972, 1973, and 1974, disallowed my travel vouchers in 1974, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, and made it clear that they would never promote me to GS-13. When I was 40 in 1988, my Democrat GAO superiors came to realize that I would never become a Democrat. To get rid of me, they threw me off audits of IRS, gave me a very bad job assignment, gave me very unfair performance expectations, gave me a very unfair performance appraisal, ranked me at the bottom of my coworkers for pay-for-performance (PFP), and then always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for PFP. They forced me to retire when I was 49 in 1997. According to them, I held jobs and I got promotions that should have been given to my Democrat coworkers who were minority, female, younger, and/or veteran.
