(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Trump has issued an executive order turning an estimated 8,000 federal workers into at-will employees, which means the government could fire them without providing any reason. The move culminates an effort Trump launched during his first term to strip vast numbers of federal employees of civil service protections designed to insulate their work from political interference. Nearly all of the 8,000 people affected are at the highest level of the civil service, known as GS-15. The Trump administration characterizes the roles as senior positions with significant influence over policy. They include leaders of policy offices and their chiefs of staff, heads of regional offices, program managers, senior public affairs officers and those overseeing spending and grants. The number of positions affected by Wednesday’s executive order is smaller than many anticipated. Originally, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) estimated some 50,000 positions could be reclassified. The administration has not ruled out expanding the pool at a later time. Tripling the number of at-will employees. The federal government currently has about 4,000 political appointees who serve at the pleasure of the president. Until now, the rest of the workforce of approximately 2 million people could only be fired for certain reasons, such as inadequate performance or misconduct. In those situations, agencies must follow formal processes, including giving the employee an opportunity to appeal. But in February, the administration finalized a rule creating a new category of at-will employees called Schedule Policy/Career. (During Trump’s first term, it was known as Schedule F.) It was facing multiple lawsuits even before Wednesday’s order which spells out which jobs are now at-will. “The people responsible for protecting our public health, safeguarding our environment, delivering our mail, managing our airports, protecting our public lands, and enforcing our laws should be allowed to do their jobs, not targeted by the same government they serve,” said Skye Perryman, president of Democracy Forward, one of the organizations suing the Trump administration over the rule. “When government experts can be fired without cause, it’s not just federal workers who are harmed — it’s the people across the country who rely on these essential services every day.)

Allen, 31, was an educator from Torrance, California, with an engineering degree from a prestigious university. Authorities found anti-Trump and anti-Christian rhetoric on the suspect’s social media accounts, the senior official said. . .A total of at least five to eight gunshots were fired during the incident, two law enforcement sources told CBS News. In a late-night news conference, Jeff Carroll, interim chief of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, said the suspect was armed with a shotgun, handgun and multiple knives when he attempted to charge a security checkpoint outside the dinner at the Washington Hilton Hotel. President Trump posted a photo to social media showing the shirtless suspect on the floor of the hotel with his arms tied behind his back after being detained. . .Allen — who was seen on surveillance video charging through metal detectors outside the ballroom where the dinner was taking place — had a record of firearm ownership. He received a “Teacher of the Month” award from the company in December 2024. . .Another family member who was interviewed by investigators after the attack said Allen made radical statements and that he constantly referenced a plan to do “something” to fix the issues with today’s world. (FROM THE ARTICLE: A West Chicago District 33 teacher whose pro-immigration agent comment on social media was criticized by many people has resigned. On Thursday, the school board accepted the resignation and a separation agreement of the Gary Elementary School teacher. “This situation was never about politics. It has been about our responsibility to keep schools operating normally and to minimize disruption to learning,” board President Rita Balgeman said after the vote. The board did not discuss the terms of the settlement. As part of the separation agreement, obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, the teacher will be paid his salary and health benefits through the end of the school year. It also states that the district will give a neutral reference about him to future employers. According to West Chicago Mayor Dan Bovey, the teacher commented, “go ICE!” in a social media post. Bovey, whose wife works at the school, said he spoke with the man when the controversy erupted. After the district learned of the comment Jan. 22, the teacher initially resigned that day but retracted it later that day. The district put him on leave while it investigated the matter. More than 81% of the district’s students are of Hispanic descent, according to its 2025 state school report card. Bovey said West Chicago schoolchildren have been traumatized because their parents were taken by immigration enforcement agents, and that the comment was hurtful and offensive. After the board voted, members of the public spoke about the matter. “We want our students to feel respected and valued, which is why we request that the seriousness of the comment be recognized,” one mother of a student said, speaking in Spanish. But another woman, Corinne Ingrum, urged the community to “pick your battles more wisely,” saying the action against the teacher will not resolve the community’s concerns with immigration agents’ actions. “You could have chosen to rally around one of your own beloved teachers, but instead you chose to bring more unwanted ICE attention to West Chicago,” Ingrum said. She suggested that people bring their concerns to elected officials.
