But that all changed when my father died suddenly. My mother had never attended high school, she had never worked outside the home, and my brother was having problems. So I accepted the only job offer that I got, applied for a financial hardship draft deferment, moved in with them in Crete, and helped support them. Because of all that, I did not earn an MBA until I was 27 in 1976. By then, it was too late.

All the firms that I applied to were under tremendous pressure from EEOC to hire minorities, females, and veterans. I was not a minority, female, or veteran. To make matters worse, potential employers saw me as being Vietnam War draft bait. They did not believe that my financial hardship draft deferment application would be approved. Beyond that, my GPA was not that great because to work my way through college, I had spent far too many hours delivering mail instead of studying.
