CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: Hate-filled Trump-hating Trump haters say “New session of Congress to begin as a growing number of Republicans join Trump’s effort to subvert the will of voters.” What is the will of the majority of the voters in your precinct, in your municipal district, in your municipality, in your township, in your county district, and in your county? How strongly do they want governments to get rid of those who are law enforcement officers, Trump supporters, conservative, patriotic, Republican, American, White, male, older, heterosexual, married, non-poor, homeowners, gun owners, Christian, Protestant, Italian American, German American, and/or those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time?

(DIERSEN: Between 1978 and 1992, my wife and I went on many vacations. She worked for the U.S. League of Savings Institutions ( https://www.investopedia.com/terms/u/u-s-league-of-savings-institutions.asp ) which had quarterly meetings at luxury destinations across America which she attended as its Corporate Secretary. I routinely accompanied her on those trips. Often, after the meetings were over, we visited nearby national parks. Further, I went on vacations with a coworker to Hawaii, Mexico, Bahamas, and Jamaica while I worked for IRS 1973-1976. Needless-to-say, my envy-filled IRS and GAO Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates were beyond furious. Overwhelmingly, their spouses had little or no income.)

(DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, Democrats and RINOs want everyone to think of themselves as a) being members of protected groups and b) being discriminated against. https://nationalinterest.org/feature/grover-norquist-fourteen-points-reviving-america-175159
(FROM THE ARTICLE: End identify politics/racial discrimination and quotas. On election day, the largest state in the nation, California, voted 55-45 to maintain their stated ban on racial discrimination in employment and education. The ban was enacted by a popular initiative in 1996 known as Prop 209. With this rejection of racial quotas in a vote of the people, the Supreme Court is more likely to be comfortable ruling that all racial quotas and discrimination by the government is unconstitutional. This would be a body blow to the identity politics of the Left.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Shares of Facebook climbed 33% last year, according to data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence. The social media titan saw its user base and engagement levels rise during the coronavirus pandemic, as people sought ways to remain in contact with family and friends while staying safe. So what. Facebook’s daily active users increased by 12% year over year to 1.8 billion in the third quarter. Across its entire family of apps — which includes Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger — the social media giant’s monthly active users rose 14% to a staggering 3.2 billion. That helped to drive a 22% jump in revenue to $21.5 billion. Net income, meanwhile, surged 29% to $7.8 billion, or $2.71 per share. These gains came despite an industrywide slowdown during the COVID-19 crisis, as many companies pulled back on ad spending in the early stages of the pandemic.)

— Teaching ‘white fragility’ is bad for kids of color – Rav Arora
https://nypost.com/2021/01/02/teaching-white-fragility-is-bad-for-kids-of-color/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: But then, in that same week, my 15-year-old brother told me he is learning about the concept of “systemic racism” in his English class. His teacher instructed her students that white people in our society are privileged and people of color are marginalized and disadvantaged. She went on to divide the class into groups and told them to discuss “white fragility” — the feeling of discomfort white people experience when forced to confront racial inequality. But the lesson actually left my brother, one of five people of color in his class, feeling awkward and discomforted. What he had been raised to see as a trivial and unimportant trait — the color of his skin — was suddenly spotlighted and politically charged, and all his white classmates were implicitly being told to see him as different from them, and vice versa. In the wake of protests after the police killing of George Floyd, the influence of Robin DiAngelo’s 2018 book “White Fragility” has spread far and wide. It has dominated Amazon and New York Times bestseller lists. It has been discussed on late-night TV, in workplace diversity seminars, and now even in children’s classrooms. Seattle Public Schools held training for teachers in which they were told the US is a “race-based white-supremacist society” and white teachers must “bankrupt [their] privilege in acknowledgment of [their] thieved inheritance,” according to documents recently obtained by journalist Christopher Rufo. . .The most troubling aspect of the White Fragility doctrine — and the broader “anti-racist” movement — is that race is considered the defining feature of human experience.)

https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2020/dec/31/trump-demand-to-ax-section-230-could-alter-america/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Mr. Trump and his supporters want the legal protection stripped from companies such as Twitter and Facebook so that they can swing back at social media platforms that they believe censor or diminish conservative speech online. But removing the protection contained in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act would give Twitter and Facebook greater latitude to enforce broader restrictions because failing to do so could result in heavy fines and expensive legal disputes. Eliminating the legal protection would make Twitter liable for all of the content in users’ tweets, make Facebook liable for all the content across its various platforms including Instagram, and make Wikipedia liable for whatever edits users make and the content they post. The biggest tech companies can afford to lawyer up against the ensuing onslaught of complaints in a manner that their smaller competitors cannot, and they would move quickly to change the boundaries of what is acceptable to publish online.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The United States and European Union on Tuesday demanded that China release a citizen journalist jailed for reports from Wuhan, with top US diplomat Mike Pompeo accusing Beijing of covering up COVID-19. Zhang Zhan, a former lawyer in custody since May, was Monday handed four years in prison over her early online accounts that provided a rare unvarnished glimpse of the city where the mysterious respiratory illness was first detected a year ago. Pompeo in a statement called on China to “release her immediately and unconditionally.” “The Chinese Communist Party has shown once again it will do whatever it takes to silence those who question the party’s official line, even regarding crucial public health information,” outgoing President Donald Trump’s secretary of state said. Zhang’s reports challenged Beijing’s official narrative that the government valiantly defeated the virus, questioning hospital capacity and access to virus testing in the early days and showing aggression on the part of Chinese authorities to her filming on her phone. The 37-year-old was sentenced by a Shanghai court for “picking quarrels and provoking trouble.” Pompeo is an outspoken critic of Beijing who has attacked China over its role in the origins of the pandemic, which has claimed more than 1.7 million lives worldwide.)

In 1978, my wife and I could afford to buy a home in Wheaton, but we could not have afforded to buy that home if it had been in a more expensive municipality, township, or county. In 1984, my wife and I could afford to have a new home built in Wheaton, but we could not have afforded to have that home built in a more expensive municipality, township, or county. Since 1972, when I bought a new town home in University Park, my critics/opponents have hinted/implied/argued/shouted that because of discrimination against minorities and because of discrimination against females, if I had been a minority or a female, I would not have been able to buy that town home. The down payment for that town home came from what I had earned and saved a) working for IRS in Harvey for the prior 9 months and in Chicago for 6 months before that and b) working for the Firestone Store in Chicago Heights for the prior 18 months part-time and for 7 months before that full-time. That money also enabled me to a) buy a new Corvette in 1971 and b) pay tuition for graduate business courses at Loyola. Firestone hired me in 1970 because it could not find a qualified minority, female, or veteran who would take the job. In 1971, Oldsmobile withdrew a job offer that I had accepted saying that Oldsmobile had just agreed to stop hiring Whites to settle an EEOC complaint. That directly resulted in a) Firestone Stores firing me from full-time employment and b) my accepting a job offer from IRS. IRS hired me in 1971 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, or veteran who would take the job. My wife and I bought a home in Wheaton in 1978. The down payment came from what she had earned and saved working for the U.S. League of Savings Institutions the prior 8 years and for the FBI for the 2 years before that. My wife and I had a home built in Wheaton in 1984. The down payment came from the sale of our Wheaton home and my University Park town home which I had rented out since 1976. By then, my wife had worked for the U.S. League of Savings Institutions for 14 years and I had worked for GAO for more than 4 years and for IRS for almost 9 years before that.)

(FROM THE LETTER: It’s no secret that institutional racism in housing disproportionately impacts Black, Native American and Latinx household, making the rollback more impactful on low-income renters of color. During this time, Americans are still trying to process George Floyd’s tragic death and have observed firsthand the glaring inequities in underserved communities with the administration’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Even the National Association of Realtors maintained that “now is not the time” to change a policy that could hinder progress against institutional racism in housing.)

SPRINGFIELD STATE JOURNAL REGISTER
— AUGUST 16, 2012 FLASHBACK: A bunch of political info — daily – Bernard Schoenburg
https://www.sj-r.com/x1782330063/Bernard-Schoenburg-A-bunch-of-political-info-daily
(FROM THE ARTICLE: There are lots of websites that compile political news, and I think it’s time I share one that I find quite interesting. There are lots of websites that compile political news, and I think it’s time I share one that I find quite interesting. It’s at www.gopillinois.com , and, as you can tell by its address, it has a Republican flavor. That is an understatement reinforced with the comments added by the compiler himself — DAVID DIERSEN of Wheaton. He introduced a recent UPI story about Republicans’ views on the drought and wildfires by saying: “Democrats blame everything bad, including bad weather, on Republicans, especially on Republicans who are conservative, White, male, older, non-poor and non-veteran.” And talking of a New York Times article about a photographer arrested while on assignment in the Bronx, Diersen wrote that since 2000, he has been thrown out of, barred from, or not advised of news conferences “by Democrats, Democrat plants, RINOs (Republicans in name only), their operatives, and their dupes.” Thus, if you don’t want to read some very pointed comments, you may not want to go to gopillinois.com. But you would be missing a treasure of links to the day’s news and opinion. Diersen, 63, is a retired federal employee who became the Illinois editor of a national GOP website in 2000, and since 2004 has put out his own Illinois compilation every day. There’s usually about 50 articles daily, he says. He’s generally up by 3 a.m. He says he spends at least 10 hours a day on this passion of his, with no pay, and has put out links to more than 117,000 articles. As his comments above hinted, party regulars don’t always greet his work with relish. He includes dissident voices within the GOP tent, and some whose credibility is questionable. But he puts it all out there. He’s a GOP precinct committeeman, and he believes in people having information. He also wants to help elect Republican candidates who “will defend and advance the party’s platform.” The site makes available plenty of Diersen history, too, including how his “liberal Democrat superiors,” in his view, forced him to take early retirement at 49 from the U.S. General Accounting Office, “because of his opposition to race and gender based preference and his participation in a class action lawsuit” on that subject. He wouldn’t mind my telling you that he also passed his CPA and Certified Internal Auditor exams on first attempts more than three decades ago. Agree or disagree with him, but Diersen provides a bunch of interesting information — every day.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: A pair of heavyweights are leaving the State Journal-Register. Political writer and columnist Bernard Schoenburg and statehouse reporter Doug Finke have accepted buyouts and will be departing the paper on Dec. 1. Finke has worked at the SJ-R since the 1970s; Schoenburg’s first byline appeared in the paper in 1990. Their departures will leave the daily newspaper with two news reporters and an equal number of sports reporters, presuming Finke and Schoenburg are not replaced before their departures and current staff isn’t reassigned. The paper, which has no fulltime courts reporter or police reporter or city hall reporter or education reporter, has posted jobs for a statehouse/politics reporter as well as a cultural, diversity and inclusion reporter who will “focus coverage on culture, diversity and inclusion trends across central Illinois,” according to a job listing posted by Gannett, the SJ-R’s parent company.)

https://freebeacon.com/coronavirus/conservative-journalist-successfully-sues-state-of-minnesota-for-access-to-coronavirus-briefings/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A conservative journalist barred from Minnesota‘s daily coronavirus briefings successfully sued the state to regain access. In a settlement signed Friday, Minnesota’s Department of Health agreed to reinstate PowerLine cofounder Scott Johnson’s access to the state’s COVID-19 Conference Line “as long as and whenever” the department holds a briefing. Johnson sued the Department of Public Health when he was barred from their conference line in May without explanation. Johnson had until then participated in the calls and posed questions skeptical of Democratic governor Tim Walz’s approach to combating the coronavirus. Health department officials also stopped responding to Johnson’s written inquiries. Those officials told the Washington Free Beacon that the briefings were limited to “professional journalists,” but did not offer a definition of the term. In his lawsuit, Johnson argued that the state had discriminated against him on the basis of political ideology and demanded to be included in the briefings. The Minnesota Department of Public Health declined to comment on the settlement agreement. Johnson has been critical of the state’s handling of the pandemic, challenging Walz’s decision to keep the state shut down in April given that, at the time, more than 80 percent of Minnesota‘s coronavirus deaths occurred in nursing homes and residential care facilities. That number dipped to more than 70 percent as of mid-October, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Johnson, a retired attorney and accredited reporter, argued that his exclusion constituted “an ongoing deprivation … [of his] First Amendment rights under the United States Constitution.” Friday’s settlement acknowledges his exclusion from the briefings and guarantees him immediate access: Health department communications director Michael Schommer is required under the agreement to answer up to three of Johnson’s pandemic-related questions per week.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican leaders are increasingly alarmed about the party’s ability to stave off Democratic challengers in Georgia’s two Senate runoff elections — and they privately described President Trump on a recent conference call as a political burden who despite his false claims of victory was the likely loser of the 2020 election. . .Some on the call expressed particular concern about Georgia’s fast-changing electorate, driven by the increasingly liberal metro Atlanta region and the push by 2018 gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams to register more Democratic voters, especially in the state’s communities of color. Democrats hope that the candidate challenging Loeffler in the runoff, the Rev. Raphael Warnock — the pastor at Atlanta’s iconic Ebenezer Baptist Church, where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. once preached — will help energize Black voters. Perdue, elected in 2014, faces Democrat Jon Ossoff, a documentary filmmaker running his first statewide race. “They changed, dramatically, the face of the electorate in Georgia. Many of these new voters are from California, Illinois, New York, New Jersey, and they’re not of the conservative persuasion,” Perdue said on the call.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The council instead voting to table the discussions, passing the ordinance to city staff who will work to create a new resolution. The idea came from council member Jenn Carrillo who says instead of celebrating Columbus local business leaders should encourage the community to learn the history of native Americans and grieve at how they were treated. She says this is not meant to deny someone a day of pride but rather begin reparations for actions she says still have affects today. “When we lift up Columbus’s history,” Carrillo said. “We are lifting up a history of colonialism, genocide and white supremacy. That has no place in our world in 2020.” Several community members spoke during public comment against Carrillo’s decision. Many believe renaming the day is seen as a way of reversing history. “Don’t listen to these people guilt you about Columbus,” said Becky Swan to the council. “That was 300 years ago, this is Bloomington, this is today, what are you going to do in 2020.”)

POLITICO ILLINOIS
— Republicans are fuming that the Illinois Supreme Court has replaced Justice Thomas Kilbride, who lost his retention race last week, with a Democratic ally, saying the judicial maneuver is a slap in the face to voters. Justices voted 6-0 to name Appellate Judge Robert Carter to the bench as a placeholder until an election is held in two years. Carter is 74 and says he won’t run. “This is an outrageous decision,” Jon Zahm, who heads the Vote No for Kilbride committee, posted on Facebook. “The voters made clear they did not want politics as usual on the Supreme Court, as they voted an end to the 4-3 Democrat stranglehold on blocking important issues like fair maps, pension reform, lawsuit reform, and term limits.” Zahm said the three Republican justices “should have voted no and left the seat unfilled until the next election.” The hand-wringing over Kilbride’s replacement comes after Zahm and other Republicans waged a fierce battle to remake the highest court. They say Kilbride is beholden to Madigan and they point to an opinion he wrote that removed a referendum on the 2016 ballot that would have taken away Madigan’s power on redistricting. The House speaker donated $550,000 to Kilbride’s campaign to stay on the bench — he won 56 percent of the vote but needed 60 percent to keep his seat. Former 3rd District Appellate Court Judge Kent Slater, a Republican, told the Tribune’s Ray Long that Carter had been Kilbride’s choice to hold an appointed seat on the appellate for several years. “It’s like the Supreme Court’s patronage,” Slater said. – Shia Kapos

— OCTOBER 13, 2020 FLASHBACK: A group of Democratic south suburban mayors and elected officials have filed suit against the Democratic Bloom Township committeeman, Lori Wilcox, because of her plan to hold an in-person, candidate slating caucus in December rather than an open, spring primary for the 2021 municipal and township elections. Given the caucus typically draws 300 to 400 people in the same room, such a meeting would violate the governor’s executive order on large gatherings. The mayors group is concerned about a “super spreader event” if Wilcox’s planned candidate slating caucus moves forward. The emergency motion for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction filed by the Del Galdo Law Group will be heard Wednesday in Cook County Circuit Court. Wilcox told Playbook she had not yet seen the lawsuit and declined to comment. – Shia Kapos (DIERSEN: What is the status of this?)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: America’s political divisions are also economic divisions – and they are widening. That’s one message that comes through in the visual story-telling from our graphics team, published today, which shows how Republicans and Democrats are increasingly divided by the education levels, racial diversity and the amount of urban or rural character to their communities. Now, the Brookings Institution adds to the finding of a growing divide between metropolitan and non-metropolitan America. Joe Biden last week won 16% of the nation’s counties, but those counties account for 70% of nation’s economic activity, Brookings analysts report. By contrast, President Trump won 84% of counties, accounting for less than 30% of GDP. Their work shows an increasing divide between a high-output, Democratic-leaning part of the nation and a lower-output, Republican-leaning set of communities. In 2016, Brookings analysts found, Democrat Hillary Clinton won counties accounting for 64% of economic output, compared with Mr. Biden’s 70% share. Mr. Trump in 2016 won counties accounting for 36% of economic output, compared with his share of under 30% this year. That finding adds new data to a trend that the Journal also documented last year, showing that the two parties, in many ways, live in two different economies.)
