WALL STREET JOURNAL

https://www.wsj.com/articles/notable-quotable-twitters-political-ad-ban-11572908984
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Why does being a highly visible CEO mean one has “earned” more political influence than Walmart, the AFL-CIO, or any other entity that seeks to promote its political ideas? Dorsey spent his cash to start Twitter. They want to spend theirs to advertise on Twitter. How does this new policy “level the playing field?” . . .Twitter will ban not just candidate ads, but “issue ads,” because they “present a way to circumvent.” Does this mean that an ad promoting a documentary warning about (or dismissive of) climate change should be banned? How about an ad promoting a magazine profile of a candidate? Does a Gillette commercial lecturing men on the dangers of “toxic masculinity” qualify as an issue ad?)

— DIERSEN HEADLINE: Ever-increasingly, Trump-haters blame Trump for hate crimes.
https://www.newsweek.com/us-citizen-attacked-battery-acid-invading-america-1469696
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett conveyed his disgust at the attack, in part blaming President Donald Trump for inciting hatred against minorities with his consistent speeches and tweets spreading anti-immigrant zeal among his supporters. “To single out someone because they’re from a Hispanic origin is simply wrong. And we know what’s happening,” Barrett said at a brief City Hall news conference. “Everybody knows what’s happening. It’s because the president is talking about it on a daily basis that people feel they have license to go after Hispanic people. And it’s wrong,” he said.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The political headlines have been relentless lately. Calls for impeaching the President. Debates over health care, immigration and gun control. Fights over who tweeted what. Discussions of these issues can quickly get heated and toxic. They can affect relationships and even your health, according to a study published Wednesday in the journal PLOS ONE. It seems that Americans “are suffering some pretty negative consequences because of their attention to and engagement in politics,” says author Kevin Smith, a political scientist at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, discussing the survey results. . .Nearly 40% of respondents said that politics was a cause of stress in their lives. About 20% reported losing sleep, feeling fatigued, or being depressed due to politics. Between 10% and 30% of the respondents said that politics took an emotional toll on them, by causing anger, frustration, hate,or guilt, or caused them to make comments they later regretted. And about 20% reported that politics had damaged their friendships. And, says Smith, “16% say that politics has made my home life less pleasant.” . . . In 2017, the APA annual survey on stress levels of Americans found that 57% of respondents said that they were stressed by the current political climate, whereas 63% said that the future of the nation was a cause of stress for them. Sixty percent said they thought that the country was its lowest point in history. And over half of the respondents said that while they like to stay informed about news and politics, doing so stresses them out. . .For now, Bufka says, the new study suggests that political engagement comes at an emotional cost. And that in turn could affect politics. “In a democracy, it’s really important that people want to be engaged,” she says. “It would be really discouraging if people felt [so] stressed and negatively impacted by the political discourse of the day, that … they disengage from politics.”)

https://www.nytimes.com/2003/08/24/us/the-new-couples-next-door-gay-and-straight.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Mark Demich and Kevin Hengst, the couple across the street, are not actually married. Still, in the seven years they have lived in this Chicago suburb they have become like the Buckinghams, the Therrons, the Siconolfis — just another young family in the neighborhood, socializing porch to porch on summer evenings. Choosing the suburbs over the city, Mr. Demich and Mr. Hengst feared they would be The Gay Couple. But even in Wheaton — the home of an evangelical Christian college that until last year prohibited drinking and dancing, the seat of a reliably Republican county — they have found plenty of company. Sixty gay men and lesbians turned out for a wine-tasting a few weeks ago. About 30 played softball at a local park on a recent Saturday. . .In Wheaton, Mr. Demich, 42, said he liked the diversity. ”Of families,” he explained, after a brief pause. ”As opposed to city culture, where everything is around gay life, gay events. That’s not really the way America lives.” When he and Mr. Hengst decided to move to the suburbs, they told their real estate agent, ”Anything but Wheaton,” knowing its conservative reputation. Then they found the perfect house. They hung out a Gay Pride flag, and the neighbors invited them to a block party. The couple said they would bring fruit salad. ”Everyone broke out laughing,” Mr. Weinberg, a contractor, recalled. ”They were making fun of it, which went over well.” Neighborhood children have confronted the couple with questions: Do you two sleep together? Do you have wives? Their parents cringe, but also say they consider themselves, and their children, fortunate. ”Growing up in a good Catholic family, I didn’t even know about anything like this,” Ms. Weinberg said. ”It wasn’t thrown in front of me. These kids, if they don’t see it now, they’re going to see it soon. Living on a block like this is more the real world.” A few blocks over the train tracks, Ladd McClurg and Brad Ogilvie had similar concerns about moving to Wheaton when Mr. Ogilvie accepted a job in town. Mr. McClurg, who grew up in the Mormon faith, being taught that gays were sinners, said he arrived with ”almost a visceral disdain” for Wheaton’s many churches and their members. ”I learned to discover they’re not all bigoted,” Mr. McClurg said. ”There are a lot more variations on the middle out here than I was willing to give credit for.” Still, gays here say they step carefully to avoid causing offense. Betty Burns and Lisa Rechkemmer say they would never hold hands or hang out a pride flag for fear of upsetting their good relations with the neighbors. Mr. Ogilvie and Mr. McClurg display the flag, but resist the urge to hold hands unless they visit the city. One lesbian in Wheaton talked about how accepting her neighbors were, but did not want to be identified by name because she feared the kind of hate calls she and her partner received when they moved in two years ago. Mr. Demich and Mr. Hengst had to go to six or seven churches before they found one that did not preach that homosexuality is a sin. The church they chose, St. Paul Lutheran, had declared itself ”open and affirming” to gays five years ago, but only after a struggle. The decision was prompted not by gay parishioners — there were none at the time — but by a young man who had been baptized and confirmed in the church who died of AIDS. ”It lifted the issue,” said Marianne Avery, a member of the church council that debated the change. ”It was, ‘This is our children, this is not about letting someone in.’ ” Still, a handful of members left. ”What if they show up in drag?” the Rev. Melody Eastman, the pastor, recalled one woman asking.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Three members of the nine-person City Council have been consistent in their oppositions to recreational marijuana. They are Patty Gustin, Kevin Coyne and Paul Hinterlong. On the other side, Judy Brodhead, Benny White and Mayor Steve Chirico have shown support for allowing recreational marijuana retail sales. The remaining three council members, Patrick Kelly, John Krummen and Theresa Sullivan, are somewhere in the middle and likely will ultimately decide whether Naperville will allow recreational marijuana dispensaries. . .School districts 203 and 204 sent letters to the city noting their reservations about Illinois’ new marijuana law, which takes effect Jan. 1. Sales will be legal only to people 21 and older. “The District 203 Board of Education, speaking on behalf of the many students, parents, district staff and administrators and community, has serious concerns about the impact of recreational marijuana sales on the teens in our school district. We urge the City Council to consider the impact of its actions on the teens in our community,” District 203′s letter said. The School District 204 Board of Education raised similar concerns. “While it will remain illegal for our students to purchase recreational marijuana, we have concerns that the increased availability in our community may lead to potential issues at school,” the District 204′s letter says. “With easier access to recreational marijuana in our community, what will be the long-term cognitive impact on our youth who use the drug?” North Central College also sent a letter, which did not so much take a stance on the issue but pointed out that “because marijuana remains illegal under federal law and federal financial assistance remains important to the College and our students, marijuana will continue to be banned on our campus.”)

So far, though, the letters from the unnamed members of the “Diamond and Silk Legal Team”—which come with stern warnings not to share them publicly—have not worked as intended. The pair’s anonymous lawyer have sent at least two cease-and-desist aimed at stories that mention Diamond and Silk in connection with racist groups. One of the targeted blog posts, published on Wonkette, accused the African-American duo of helping to “prop up the most vile white supremacy.” Diamond and Silk’s mystery legal team wrote that the article “deliberately and maliciously slandered and defamed Diamond and Silk and the Diamond and Silk brand by deliberately and maliciously attaching their name to racist context.” The letter also includes a warning for Wonkette not to post about the letter: “This notice is not to be made public via online sources or any other sources in any manner.” Wonkette just made fun of the letter, published it in full anyway, and refused to take their story down.)

http://www.gopusa.com/?p=74988
— Google limits employees’ discussion of politics (DIERSEN: Government is nasty. Politics is nasty. Democrats are nasty. While I worked for the Democrats who ran GAO’s Chicago office 1980-1997, my Democrat coworkers and subordinates a) frequently asked me questions to confirm that I was Protestant (baptized, raised, and confirmed as a Missouri Synod Lutheran), conservative, patriotic, Republican, old (born in 1948), non-poor, childless, gun owner, 100% German American, draft avoider, Corvette owner, former union member for almost 12 years, and that my ancestors have been in America since 1844 and b) stressed the aforesaid negative information to my Democrat superiors and supervisors. They also stressed that my Democrat IRS superiors a) had not promoted me beyond GS-12, b) disallowed my education deductions in 1978, c) got rid of my mentor in 1975, and d) disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. They also stressed that my Democrat Post Office superiors had forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)

IRS hired me in 1971 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, or veteran who would take the job. GATEWAY PUNDIT
— Tech Giants to Use Chinese-Style Social Scoring System on ALL Americans After Successful Testing in Pilot Program on Influential Conservatives – Jim Hoft (DIERSEN: Of course, I would get a very low score because I am a Trump supporter, Protestant (baptized, raised, and confirmed as a Missouri Synod Lutheran), conservative, patriotic, Republican, American, White, male, old (born in 1948), non-poor, gun owner, 100% German American, draft avoider, and my ancestors have been in America since 1844.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: In 2018 Google helped the Chinese Communists develop a social credit scoring system. The scoring system, first announced in 2014, rates China’s one billion citizens based on their behavior and associations. Already, nine million people with low scores have been blocked from buying tickets for domestic flights and trains. As horrible as this sounds the Silicon Valley tech giants are already using a similar system here in the United States. And Facebook is using offline behavior to factor into their scoring system. . .On Monday Fast Company reported on how the social credit system can happen here. It already is. Alex Jones last year lost his YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Apple accounts on a single day due to comments he made YEARS AGO. Conservatives and Conservative publishers like The Gateway Pundit are already banned or censored by Facebook, Google, Twitter, WhatsApp, etc. Conservatives and patriotic Americans have had their Chase Bank accounts shut down. Conservatives, including this writer, have been blocked from home insurance companies from purchasing their product. Conservatives have their incomes targeted and make significantly less than fake news mainstream reporters. It goes on and on. The social media scoring is already taking place. This is our future, for all of us. And we have a party of wimps who are too afraid to stop this.)

The panel ducked addressing issues regarding how the policies might be implemented, “acknowledging that additional research and data are necessary to create a fair and equitable process and determine the long-term sustainability of the funding sources.”)

August 14 Morning Edition

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— The August Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC) monthly meeting is this evening at the Holiday Inn in Carol Stream. The social hour starts at 6:00 PM and the meeting starts at 7:00 PM. SEE: http://dupagegop.org/calendar-3/

I will be signing in as a candidate. I am a candidate to be appointed to fill Wheaton’s West District City Council vacancy. The other six Republican candidates are Edward Ahern, Jeffery Antonelli, Angela Blatner, Nancy Harding, Mark Kmeicik, and Robert McNeily.

Hopefully, all of the aforesaid seven candidates will a) attend meeting, b) announce their candidacies, c) and seek the support of the eighteen Republican Precinct Committeemen who represent Wheaton’s West District. Those eighteen Precinct Committeemen are Joseph Caruso, Dave Diersen, Thomas Elsner, Arthur Grant, Ralph Hinkle, Marty Keller, John Kocinski, Robert Krzyzewski, Michael Hinsdale, Jae Kwon, Robert Larsen, Connor McCarthy, Robert McNeily, Ronald Menna, Elizabeth Tatro, James Ryan, Mark Thomas, and Herbert Wehling.

Hopefully, MTRCC will gather relevant information about the aforesaid seven candidates, provide that information to the aforesaid eighteen Precinct Committeemen, and host a candidate forum. The goal of providing information on the candidates and hosting a candidate forum is to help the aforesaid eighteen Precinct Committeemen recommend to Wheaton’s City Council the best possible candidate to be appointed to fill the Wheaton West District City Council vacancy.

In my opinion, the following information about all 10 candidates should be disclosed: How long they have lived in Wheaton, how long they have lived in Wheaton’s West District, their work experience, their education, their professional certifications and licenses, their memberships in professional associations, why they want to be appointed to fill the vacancy, what they believe the three most important issues are that Wheaton needs to address in the next 2 years and how those issues those issues should be addressed, their political affiliation and activities, their civic activities, if they would vote for or against banning the sale of pot in Wheaton, what their position is on Wheaton’s Roosevelt Road corridor, if they would vote for or against requiring employers in Wheaton to use E-Verify, and what they have done that demonstrates they can carry out typical city council functions. In my opinion, Republican Precinct Committeemen in Wheaton’s West District should have the above information.

At Wheaton’s City Council meeting on Monday, August 19, 2019, its members will go into executive session to deliberate on the 10 candidates who have applied. Because, in that session, they will be reviewing the documents that the 10 candidates have submitted, Wheaton has denied my FOIA request for those documents.

According to MTRCC’s bylaws (http://www.miltongop.org/about-mtrcc/by-laws), “When a position within Milton Township is declared vacant, the MTRCC shall meet within forty (40) days of the declaration of vacancy to recommend an individual to fill such vacancy. The recommendation shall be decided at a convention of the Organization by a majority vote of the Organization through a written ballot.” It would be great if MTRCC would host a candidate forum for the aforesaid seven Republican candidates.” I urge MTRCC to do the aforesaid concerning Wheaton’s West District City Council vacancy.

Many Republican candidates, elected officials, and party leaders routinely attend MTRCC meetings. I hope that the following will attend MTRCC’s August 14 meeting and a candidate forum if one is held: a) Wheaton’s mayor and City Council members, b) 6th Congressional District candidates Jeanne Ives and Evelyn Sanguinetti; c) DuPage County Recorder candidates Ron Almiron and Babette Holder; d) Illinois officials including Amy Grant; e) DuPage County officials including Robert Berlin, Fred Bucholz, Daniel Cronin, Pete DiCianni, Grant Eckhoff, Timothy Elliott, Robert Grogan, Gwen Henry, Richard Jorgensen, Christopher Kachiroubas, Robert Larsen, Paula McGowen, James Mendrick, Al Murphy, Sean Noonan, Jeffrey Redick, Darlene Ruscitti, Timothy Whelan, and Jim Zay; f) Milton Township officials including Sal Falbo, Chris Heidorn, Gail Hinkle, Marty Keller, Chris LeVan, Gary Muehlfelt, David Molitor, John Monino, and Yada Nathwani; g) Wheaton Park District officials including Michael Benard; h) School District 200 officials; and i) College of DuPage officials including Annette Corrigan, Christine Fenne, Heidi Holan, and Frank Napolitano.

It will be extremely interesting to see which of the seven candidates are endorsed by which of the aforesaid candidates, elected officials, and party leaders, and especially which candidates Ives and Sanguinetti might endorse because they both have served on Wheaton’s City Council.

Further, I will be asking a) Susan Fitch, Chris Zaruba, and other Wheaton City Council members who attend the meeting to brief the meeting’s attendees on actions being taken to ban the sale of pot in Wheaton and b) Grant Eckhoff, Tim Elliott, Bob Larsen, Jim Zay, and other DuPage County Board members who attend the meeting to brief the meeting’s attendees on actions being taken to ban the sale of pot in DuPage County’s unincorporated areas.

Further, I will be asking the meeting’s attendees to join me, Bob Cherry, Dick Furstenau, B.J. Singer, and Tim Whelan in urging DuPage County, Wheaton, Carol Stream, Glendale Heights, Lombard, Downers Grove, Naperville, Warrenville, West Chicago, and the rest of the 38 municipalities in DuPage County to ban the sale of pot.

Further, I will be asking the DuPage County Republican Central Committee, its Chairman Marty Keller, MTRCC, and the other eight Republican township party organizations in DuPage County to urge DuPage County and the 38 municipalities in DuPage County to ban the sale of pot. – Dave Diersen
