(FROM THE ARTICLE: Dr. Enrico Benedetti, along with officials from the University of California Los Angeles and University of California San Francisco, was initially accused of being soft on antisemitism on campus since the Trump administration took office, but the debate about the state of medical education has shifted since the congressional probe began last year. The Committee on Education & the Workforce began investigating the colleges in light of “complaints of severe antisemitism” at the schools, which committee Chairman Tim Walberg, R-Michigan, said stemmed from an activist infrastructure the universities had constructed. Walberg accused the schools of teaching that incited antisemitism, including “labeling of Jews as white, and therefore privileged and oppressors.” In his opening comments, Walberg went on to say the schools have integrated DEI into their admissions decisions and curricula, promoting courses that have nothing to do with medical science, but seek to turn medical students into “far left activists.” In opening testimony, Benedetti addressed the questions over antisemitism at the medical school, which has campuses in Chicago, Peoria and Rockford, saying the school has taken steps to better deal with religious and other bigotry. Benedetti testified the medical school had discontinued an internal communication channel that had become a forum for inappropriate and offensive commentary; changed its leadership structure to ensure clear lines of accountability, in which a new vice dean of education will now have oversight over student complaints regarding misconduct; and is updating the curriculum to better ensure that all of its physicians are trained to effectively treat patients from all communities. Benedetti was joined by Dr. Sam Hawgood, chancellor at UCSF, and Dr. Steve Dubinett, dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Dr. Roger Mitchell Jr., president of the National Medical Association, the organization serving Black physicians, also testified. Benedetti and the other two school officials testified that their universities do not use race as a factor in determining acceptance into medical school. “The college’s primary goal is simple: to train excellent physicians who provide the best care to all patients, regardless of their own background or the background of those they serve,” Benedetti testified. “We provide a medical education that focuses on science, evidence-based medicine and the professional competencies required to care for patients.” The hearing moved away from antisemitism to diversity, with Walberg stating that medical education ought to be based on merit and “organic diversity” versus “merit flexibility with manufactured diversity.” He asked each dean whether students of different races were treated differently and whether students are chosen on the basis of race. Benedetti testified that race is not considered “when we choose the best student.” However, Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-N.C., said UI Medical College still states it is “committed to diversity and inclusion,” concluding that it was “clear that DEI is still the core mission” of the school. The ranking Democrat on the committee, Rep. Robert Scott of Virginia, said that while the committee had begun by investigating antisemitism, it became a discussion of DEI, as Republicans “abandoned good faith efforts to end discrimination,” turning a blind eye to other members of their party who actively promote bigotry. He defended the role of DEI in medical education, saying teaching about diversity is how to combat discrimination. Schools need to teach future doctors “to recognize and confront bias,” he said. “Inclusion isn’t just fair, it’s more effective medicine,” Scott said. Gender care at UI Health. Questioning turned to transgender care when Rep. Robert Onder, R-Mo., noted the Illinois university’s health system, UI Health, had suspended gender-affirming surgeries for minors in August 2025. Benedetti testified the system had “immediately” followed President Donald Trump’s executive order calling for a halt to all gender surgical procedures for minors. However, Benedetti could not answer whether minor patients could still receive puberty blockers or “cross-sex hormones” at UI Health, which Onder said should also be abolished for minors. “UI Health remains steadfast in its mission to provide compassionate, inclusive and patient-centered care,” the health system said in an emailed statement today. “The hospital suspended gender-affirming surgical procedures for patients under age 19, effective August 1, 2025. We have made no additional changes to our services.”)

I transferred to GAO in 1980 after I had earned an MBA in 1976 and passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979. To transfer, my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to take a $23,699/year (21%) pay cut in today’s dollars, a downgrade from GS-12 Step 5 to GS-9 Step 10, currently $89,702/year. They succeeded in keeping me off audits of IRS’s Collection Division for my entire almost 18-year GAO career. I was assigned to audits of IRS’s Criminal Investigation Division for 3 years 1986-1988 only because the GAO Manager who had arranged my transfer got back into power. But they forced him to retire in 1987. The Democrats who ran GAO in 1980 should have offered me a promotion to GS-13 to transfer. The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee wants to know why the IRS and other federal agencies haven’t cracked down harder on tax scofflaws within their ranks or moved to seize their wages and pensions through an existing enforcement program. In a letter sent Thursday to IRS Chief Executive Officer Frank J. Bisignano, the GOP-led panel asked the agency to turn over data showing the IRS’s efforts to recover unpaid taxes, whether they’ve used wage and pension garnishment, and if they were successful at bringing any of the money into the Treasury. A recent report by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) paints a bleak picture of enforcement when it comes to federal workers. It found the number of federal employees delinquent on their taxes had increased by a staggering 43% since 2021 and that 215,000 U.S. government workers — 6.9% of the total workforce — were delinquent on their federal taxes in 2024 alone. The report also found 50,000 federal employees and retirees failed to file any tax returns at all, among them 14,000 repeat non-filers who earned federal salaries of $100,000 or more. At least 122 federal workers did not file a tax return for eight or more years, the inspector general found. A third of all non-filers were U.S. Postal Service workers. Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, Kentucky Republican, plans to crack down on the federal government’s apparent lack of enforcement. “With TIGTA’s report showing continuous increases in tax noncompliance among current and former federal employees, the Committee is concerned that this trend will continue unless IRS, the Executive Branch and Congress act now to proactively curb noncompliance with federal tax laws,” he wrote to Mr. Bisignano. Failure to file a tax return is a federal crime, but the IRS’s efforts to enforce the law among federal workers have largely failed. Last summer, the IRS mailed 427,000 delinquency notification letters to federal employees and retirees that, according to Mr. Comer, encouraged the scofflaws to voluntarily resolve their outstanding tax bills. Within a month of the notifications, only 59,000 people who received the letters made a payment, and just 4,700 paid all of the taxes they owed. In total, the IRS recovered only $58 million in delinquent tax payments from the federal workforce, which is less than 1% of the total owed by all federal workers and retirees. “This data demonstrates that the majority of noncompliant federal employees ignored the IRS letters and failed to resolve their tax liabilities in a timely manner or at all,” Mr. Comer wrote. The federal government has additional enforcement avenues for these scofflaws beyond sending friendly letters encouraging compliance. The Federal Payment Levy Program authorizes the IRS to garnish up to 15% of federal employee salaries and retiree pensions to recover unpaid taxes. Mr. Comer asked the IRS to turn over the number of non-filers referred to the Federal Payment Levy Program and the amount of tax money recovered, the number of wage garnishment requests for unpaid taxes made to the Bureau of Fiscal Service, the number of employees and pensioners “who had federal payments or salaries levied” and the amount of money recovered. Mr. Comer asked the IRS to turn over the data by July 9 and to agree to a staff-level briefing on IRS enforcement of federal workers’ tax compliance. Under the law, the Treasury Department can hold its own employees accountable for tax delinquencies. The audit said that was probably a factor in the department having a relatively low delinquency rate of just 2.4%. The law, however, prohibits the IRS from sharing tax information outside the Treasury, so other departments struggle to crack down on workers who duck paying their federal taxes. The loophole leads to weak enforcement, Mr. Comer said. “It seems unlikely that employees who are already failing to pay or to file taxes for years in violation of federal laws would voluntarily identify themselves to their employing agencies,” Mr. Comer said.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: In June 2025, the New Jersey Reparations Council released its 244-page report, “For Such a Time as This,” calling on the state to provide “repair” for a claimed $643,000 per-family racial wealth gap and endorsing sweeping reparations-related policies. Since then, several New Jersey reparations advocacy groups have again invoked Juneteenth to renew calls for lawmakers in Trenton to take up the Council’s recommendations. I will leave ethicists to debate the fairness of coercing one generation that committed no sin to compensate people against whom no sin was committed. Instead, I pose a simpler question: Who are the payors and payees? Reparations require neat racial bookkeeping at a time when America has become anything but neat. Since Loving v. Virginia in 1967, interracial and interethnic relationships have become commonplace. Roughly one-quarter of coupled Americans now have a partner of a different race or ethnicity, while millions of children have mixed-race parentage. As racial lines blur with each decade, advocates rarely explain who qualifies, who pays, and who collects. Does a half-white Patrick Mahomes pay… himself? The Council’s report declares that “all Black people in New Jersey are eligible for reparations,” while expressly declining to limit eligibility to descendants of enslaved people. Yet it never offers a workable definition of “Black” in a state where race and ethnicity overlap. Is eligibility based on ancestry percentage, self-identification, mixed-race status, ethnicity, appearance, family history, or length of residence? The report does not say. And who pays? The report simply demands that “New Jersey” pay hundreds of billions of dollars in reparations — $178,000 to each black person or $642,800 to each black family — without clearly explaining how such payments would be funded or where Hispanics, Indians, Asians, Middle Easterners, recent African immigrants, and other nonwhite residents fit into this racial accounting. That lack of clarity exposes the deeper problem: Morality aside, the sheer complexity, subjectivity, and administrative arbitrariness of reparations make them untenable on their face. Targeting New Jerseyans is especially strange. During the Civil War, New Jersey sent more than 88,000 citizens to fight for the Union, not the Confederacy. More than 6,000 died, many of them boys and young men. Adjusted for today’s population, that would be the equivalent of nearly 90,000 New Jerseyans dying — more than the state’s entire number of male high-school seniors. One would think a state that sacrificed the flower of its youth in the war that ended slavery had made a rather substantial atonement. Nor are today’s New Jerseyans even remotely the same population. Millions descend from families who arrived decades after Appomattox, often penniless and facing discrimination themselves. Indeed, one in four New Jersey residents today was not even born in the United States. It is hard to see how they bear moral or financial liability for a long-abolished institution. Reparations advocates such as Social Justice Matters, Inc, often emphasize that New Jersey once held “more than two-thirds of all enslaved black people in the North.” But two-thirds of what? Notice the move: percentages instead of raw numbers. “Two-thirds of all Northern slaves” sounds far more damning than 2,254 — the actual number still held in bondage in New Jersey in 1830, according to the census. I say “still” because that figure had fallen from roughly 12,422 in 1800, an 82% decline. Slavery remained technically legal, yes, but it was rapidly withering. By 1840, the number was down to 674. By Juneteenth 1865, the Garden State could count exactly 18 remaining elderly slaves. That puts New Jersey’s wartime sacrifice in perspective. For each of New Jersey’s remaining enslaved black people freed at war’s end, some 350 white New Jerseyans had died in the struggle that ended bondage. Was New Jersey guilty of participating in slavery? Absolutely. Did slavery create disadvantages that lingered for generations? No doubt. No one should deny either truth. But guilt is not a blank check, and history is not an accounting ledger that can be balanced two centuries later by sorting today’s residents into crude racial categories. If the Reparations Council wants to impose vast costs on New Jerseyans, it should at least answer the simplest questions first: Who qualifies? Who pays? How is liability assigned? What happens to mixed-race families? What about immigrants, recent arrivals, and descendants of Union soldiers? Until those questions are answered, New Jersey reparations remain less a serious policy proposal than a moral slogan in search of a workable system.)

If anyone should pay reparations, it should be Democrat leaders whose ancestors owned slaves. Affirmative Action (AA) is reparations. Democrat leaders have always used AA to make Republicans who are the following pay reparations: conservative, White, male, older, non-poor, non-veteran, Protestant, German American, and/or have ancestors who have been in America for a long time. Because I am all of the aforesaid, my Democrat superiors in the federal government made me pay reparations big time. It culminated when they forced me to retire when I was 49 in 1997 and gave my job and my preferred corner office to my Black subordinate.

But that all ended when I was 22 in 1971 when my Firestone Store boss rudely fired me when I told him that I had accepted a job offer from Oldsmobile. But Oldsmobile withdrew that job offer saying that it had just agreed to stop hiring Whites to settle an EEOC complaint. I had to have a job. That directly resulted in my accepting a job offer from IRS. I had not specifically applied for that job. I got that offer solely a) because I had passed the Federal Service Entrance Examination, b) because I had earned a bachelor’s degree in business, and c) because the Democrats who ran IRS could not find a Democrat, minority, female, or veteran who would take the job.
