Undergraduates pursuing a bachelor’s degree expect to earn roughly $80,000 one year after graduation — about $24,000 more than the average starting salary of $56,153, according to Clever Real Estate. Clever surveyed 769 undergraduates and found that elevated salary expectations were common across all majors, but students studying education and nursing showed a wider disconnect than others. The 10 college majors with the highest unemployment. “Although teachers have historically been underpaid, education majors still anticipate making a starting salary of $75,186 — about 62% more than the $46,526 they will likely receive,” the report said. Nursing majors expect a starting salary of $83,219 or 32% more than a “realistic salary” of $63,000 for nurses with one year of experience, according to Clever. But even students in higher-earning degree programs overestimated their starting salaries. Engineers, for example, expect to start at $92,452 — roughly 17% more than the $78,731 they will likely make one year out of college, the report noted. Starting salaries weren’t the only misjudgment – students’ mid-career expectations were off, as well. Ten years after graduation, the students surveyed expected to make around $145,000 on average, but the average mid-career salary is only $95,521, Clever said.)

It has attracted generations of immigrants of every race and creed, often arriving with little more than a suitcase and the firm belief that their hard work and determination would be rewarded. Yet Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s newly released Preliminary Citywide Racial Equity Plan—a 375-page monument to grievance politics and DEI—treats this urban engine of opportunity as a machine of oppression, in which “systemic racism” explains every gap in wealth, health, and achievement.
Released to great fanfare alongside a True Cost of Living report that dutifully slices data by race, Mamdani’s equity plan orders 45 agencies to view every budget line, hiring decision, and service through a “racial equity lens.” The result? More than 800 strategies and 600 indicators across seven domains—including economy, housing, education, and safety—that clothe institutionalized racial preferences in the garb of justice and will cost the city untold millions of dollars. The “missions and commitments” of city agencies are described with terms like diversity, equity, inclusion (listed separately so that the plan cannot be labeled DEI or critical theory), systemic disparity, racism, racial inequities, representation, discrimination, bias, segregation, and marginal. The agencies’ goals are to reinterpret their histories as structurally biased, to conduct extensive anti-bias trainings, to disaggregate data until disparities are all but guaranteed to appear, and then to align spending and policy decisions with predetermined equity targets, such as in hiring or minority- or women-owned business enterprise (M/WBE) procurement requirements. Mamdani’s equity plan is not the product of neutral analysis. It is a framework that presumes its conclusions and then operationalizes them. The result will be a city government less flexible and empirically oriented, one virtually obligated to see every outcome and process from a racial perspective. Searching keyword frequency offers insight into the plan’s identity hierarchy: “race,” including its variants “racist,” “racial,” and “racism,” appears 751 times. “Black” appears 189 times, “Latin” and “Hispanic” 97 times, “color” and “white” 49, “Asian” 27, and “Jew” or “Jewish” just once. In a sweeping, discrimination-obsessed government plan, a single, cursory mention of the group most disproportionately affected by bias attacks is striking. Jews have made up the largest share of hate-crime victims in New York City since 2000, when systematic tracking began. He gave me unfair performance expectations and performance appraisals. He kept me off audits of IRS. He delayed my promotions back to GS-12 Step 5. He ignored/dismissed/belittled my earning a master’s degree in accounting in 1980, my passing the Certified Internal Auditor Examination on my first attempt in 1981, and my becoming a licensed CPA in 1981. But then, in 1985, he went on extended sick leave. That allowed Bill to assign me to audits of IRS and promote me to GS-13 in 1986. But then, in 1987, Dave came back. Dave forced Bill to retire in 1987. He threw me off audits of IRS in 1988. He gave me an extremely bad job assignment and unfair performance expectations and performance appraisal. He ranked me at the bottom of my coworkers for pay-for-performance. I should write about the aforesaid. Dave would not have been able to take the aforesaid adverse actions against me that he did if I had been a Democrat, minority, female, younger, or veteran. If GAO had been unionized, Dave would not have been able to take the adverse actions against me that he did. But GAO did not unionize until 2007.
