JB Pritzker to reject federal funding from the Education Freedom Tax Credit that expands school choice for Illinois families. This reckless decision proves that if President Donald Trump and Republicans are for something, Illinois Democrats are against it, even when it helps our children and empowers our families. This commonsense legislation creates new opportunities for scholarships that help make quality education more affordable. It enables parents to choose the school — public, private, charter or otherwise — that best meets their child’s unique needs. No child should be trapped in a failing school simply because of their ZIP code. Yet, unfortunately, the Board of Education and Mayor Brandon Johnson would rather slam the door shut on these opportunities than allow families real options for their children. Illinois Democrats continue to prioritize political control over our students. They care more about the numbers of students enrolled in failing schools than in educating our students and being held accountable for their schools’ failures to educate them. (FROM THE LETTER: I support food pantries. In fact, I supported food pantries with a portion of my 2025 DuPage County Board member grants, though Loaves and Fishes in Naperville was not one of them. The L&F pantry does good work. It serves a large number of people and is run by caring and intelligent management. However, when L&F sought a $2.5 million grant from DuPage County to expand its facilities, I voted no. DuPage residents make up only 36% to 41% of people served by L&F. Conversely, 42% of the individuals served by L&F are from Kane County, 18% from Will County and 4% from Kendall County. During the last two years, Will and Kane counties combined have contributed slightly under $200,000 total to L&F. As a result, I believe that the other counties should pay a percentage of the $2.5 million that approximates the percentage that their residents benefit from L&F. As stewards of the DuPage County tax dollars, I believe we should have represented the DuPage County taxpayers in this manner. DuPage taxpayers deserve a better return than 36 to 41 cents on the dollar. In an editorial praising the vote to authorize the DuPage grant, the Daily Herald did not publish the facts I relied on to make my decision, only offered the nebulous statement that “a few DuPage board members have said that other counties should help fund the project’s estimated $8 million price tag.” The facts I stated above should have been part of the editorial and considered by the Daily Herald. In the future, both to better educate the public and to have a more informed opinion, the Daily Herald should consult with both sides of the issue and not rely on only one side.)

By the time I got married when I was 29 in 1978, I had worked for IRS for almost 7 years and my salary was $110,066/year in today’s dollars. I had earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976 and I was taking graduate evening accounting courses at DePaul. I lived in a one bedroom condo in the Outer Drive East building that I had bought in 1976. I was renting out a town home in University Park that I had bought new in 1972. I owned a 1972 Corvette that I had bought new in 1971. Things that impressed me about my outstanding wife included that her first job after high school was working for the FBI. She soon became the Corporate Secretary for the U.S. League of Savings Institutions. She did much to help elect Big Jim Thompson governor in 1976. She earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from DePaul in 1986.
