https://www.dailyherald.com/news/20200330/most-suburban-gop-lawmakers-endorse-pritzkers-covid-19-stay-at-home-rule
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois GOP House Leader Jim Durkin and Senate Republican Leader Bill Brady supported Pritzker’s executive order issued March 20 that aims to nip the spread of the respiratory infection. Republican and DuPage County Chairman Dan Cronin has appeared with Pritzker at several briefings and said “preserving people’s health and safety has to be the No. 1 consideration in an effort to minimize the impact of COVID-19 on our communities. “I intend to let the public health recommendations and data drive decision-making, so we make the most informed decisions possible in this unprecedented situation,” Cronin said. Republican state Rep. David McSweeney of Barrington Hills, however, said last week that Pritzker’s order is “too broad” and the state should align with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “I am 100% totally supportive of what the health care professionals say at the federal level,” McSweeney said. “I believe the best information is at the CDC. No one in Washington has ordered a shutdown of the state of Illinois.”)

— How will county parties hold legally mandated conventions on April 15th?
https://capitolfax.com/2020/03/30/how-will-county-parties-hold-legally-mandated-conventions-on-april-15th/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The ILGOP’s general counsel sent a memo to county chairs days ago. Excerpt… Other than the requirement that conventions be held on a particular date, the Election Code only directs that a county convention elect a county chairman, select delegates to the state convention and shall be held “within the county.” There is no statutory requirement that a convention must be conducted in any particular manner. In other words, for county organizations without bylaws that might direct otherwise, a convention could possibly be conducted by a conference call (so long as all participants are within the county), or by use of absentee ballots or other methods to elect a chairman and to conduct business. As for the requirement that state convention delegates are chosen at the county convention, that task may be delegated (as has traditionally been the case) to county chairmen if necessary. Of course, all notice requirements must be adhered to, as always. For counties with bylaws that dictate how their conventions are to be run, those bylaws will control, and county organizations should abide by them. I asked the same follow-up question to the ILGOP’s Joe Hackler about counties with in-person meeting requirements. His response… There may be a few that explicitly require personal presence for participation. However, each of these counties conventions would conceivably have a rules committee that could possibly help offer some relief.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Primary not postponed, but no word when city election results will be final Of the 117,120 vote-by-mail applications sent out before last week’s primary, 60,812 have been returned as of Tuesday morning, according to figures from the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners. – Rachel Hinton (DIERSEN: When will the election results be final in your county? https://chicago.suntimes.com/politics/2020/3/24/21192910/primary-postponed-mail-in-illinois-chicago-election-results
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Of those, 1,339 ballots were rejected for either being postmarked too late or for having an invalid or missing signature. Some may have chosen to vote in person instead of submitting a mail ballot, Allen said. “Our job is to make sure we count every legal ballot,” Allen said. Staff at the city’s electoral board got back to work Tuesday after a few days off and have resumed their four main post-election tasks: vote-by-mail ballot processing, a review of provisional ballots, a precinct canvass — which means a review of all documents and tapes from the various precinct voting locations — and a 5% retabulation of ballots. That process entails the Illinois State Board of Elections randomly selecting five ballot scanners used on Election Day or during early voting and running all ballots cast at those locations through the scanners again to verify that they were counted correctly, Allen said. But there’s no word yet on when last week’s primary results will be certified. “We also have to wait for any late arriving, but on-time postmarked, vote-by-mail ballots, so by law we cannot conclude anything by at least March 31 and also by law we’re allowed to wait at least 21 days after the Election Day to issue the proclamation,” Allen said. That would be April 7. Cook County Clerk Karen Yarbrough released unofficial results for suburban areas on Saturday. There are still some mail ballots that the county can receive so long as they arrive by March 31, James Scalzitti, a spokesman for the clerk, said in an email. Of the 60,000 mail ballots that were sent out by the clerk’s office, around 33,000 will have been tabulated by Wednesday morning, Scalzitti said. The county’s results are expected be certified in early April.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The DuPage County Board conducted its regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday in Wheaton, and while all board members participated in the meeting, not all were physically in the board room. “There [are> 11 members present and seven participating on telephone,” said DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin following a roll call at the beginning of Tuesday morning’s meeting. Cronin started off the first meeting of the board since Governor J.B. Pritzker’s stay-at-home order saying that the board “will continue to conduct the people’s business while adhering to public health and safety guidelines.” He noted that board members who were at the meeting in-person were at least six feet apart from each other. He said there were four staff members in attendance. Board member Liz Chaplin said the entire board should be on the phone, that it would have been the responsible thing to do. “Leaders have to lead by example, and if we’re going out to meetings when we have the opportunity to tele-conference, what kind of example are we setting?” she said. Board member Mary Ozog said she has risk factors and her son works at Costco and encounters lots of people every day. “We could all be carriers as the Surgeon General said yesterday. And, let’s face it, we all know there’s not enough tests. We can’t rule it out and we can’t find out if we may have had this virus at this point. And, this virus kills,” she said. Ozog said it was her civic duty to attend the meeting by phone. She’s hoping the next meeting on April 14 is entirely by phone. “We should be staying home and working to flatten the curve we’ve all been told about and try not to spread this virus any further,” she said. She points out that doing a meeting entirely by phone is doable. She cites Monday night’s Glen Ellyn board of trustees meeting. “The village of Glen Ellyn where I live had last night, I believe three staff members and the village president. No board members were present and they conducted their meeting through teleconference.” Members of the public were not allowed at the DuPage County board meeting so as not to increase the potential spread of COVID-19. Residents had been invited to make online any comments they would like read into the record during the public participation portion of the meeting. The five other DuPage County board members who participated by phone Tuesday included, Ashley Selmon, Sam Tornatore, Julie Renahan, Tim Elliott and Sadia Covert.)

Residents are required to shelter in their homes, leaving only when they must. Grocery shopping and doctor visits are examples of exemptions to the order. At first, liquor stores and recreational marijuana shops didn’t make the list of essential businesses. Now liquor and marijuana stores can remain open with measures in place to ensure 6-foot spacing between individuals.)

https://www.wigantoday.net/read-this/these-are-conditions-put-you-high-risk-catching-coronavirus-2456700
(FROM THE ARTICLE: However, evidence suggests that those with weakened immune systems, as with any virus, are more susceptible to becoming infected by coronavirus. This includes those undergoing cancer treatment, those who are being treated for autoimmune diseases like lupus, Multiple Sclerosis or inflammatory bowel diseases, those with HIV and those having an organ or bone-marrow transplant. What underlying conditions put people at the highest risk of severe infection? A report from the World Heath Organization which studied cases in China said that the underlying conditions which put people at the highest risk of severe disease are hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease (such as lung disease or asthma) and cancer. . .What other conditions or factors make severe infection more likely? Age is one of the biggest risk factors when it comes to severity of infection, with the highest mortality rates in patients over the age of 80. It has also been suggested that those who smoke or vape may be more susceptible to catching coronavirus and more likely to contract a severe infection. Those with eating disorders or any other condition which causes them to lose a large amount of weight may also be more susceptible to catching coronavirus given the condition can cause low-white blood cell counts which weakens the immune system.)

U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT
— What the Coronavirus Means for Your Retirement Finances Here’s how the COVID-19 pandemic could change your retirement income and expenses. – Emily Brandon (DIERSEN: If you had a large Roth CD maturing on April 1, 2020, how would you invest it?)
https://money.usnews.com/money/retirement/401ks/articles/what-the-coronavirus-means-for-your-retirement-finances
(FROM THE ARTICLE: THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF the coronavirus may fall especially hard on retirees who are living on a fixed income. Retirement accounts have lost value, and savings accounts are likely to generate even less interest than they did in the recent past. However, the Social Security and Medicare programs have recently been tweaked in an effort to support retirees. Here is how the coronavirus pandemic could financially impact retirees: Social Security offices are closed. Medicare will now pay for telehealth services. Retirement accounts have lost value. Savings accounts will pay lower interest rates. Recreation spending has dropped. The urge to panic is strong, but stay rational. . .Retirement Accounts Have Lost Value Watching your retirement account balance plummet is especially horrifying for those who are already retired. “Minimizing and/or delaying withdrawals from retirement accounts while we are in the midst of the crisis allows your accounts time to recover,” says Adrienne Ross, a certified financial planner for Clear Insight Financial Planning in Spokane, Washington. “It allows you to delay or avoid selling assets when they are down in value.” Think about ways to delay purchases and reduce spending to give your investments time to recover in value before you lock in the loss by selling your assets. If you have other options, consider tapping into a savings account or emergency fund rather than taking a withdrawal from a depleted retirement or investment account. “Hopefully you’ve got an emergency fund that allows you to keep the money invested,” says Marie Thomasson, a certified financial planner and owner of Modern Assets in Culver City, California. “If you need to withdraw money for required minimum distributions or living expenses, take out only the minimum necessary.” Savings Accounts Will Pay Lower Interest Rates The Federal Reserve’s interest rate cut is likely to lead to lower interest rates on savings accounts. However, you can still look for a savings account that has a better interest rate than you are earning on your current savings. “Online savings accounts are a fantastic alternative to the traditional savings account, and are still FDIC-insured,” Thomasson says. “They offer a much higher interest rate overall and I recommend them to all my clients.” If you won’t need your savings in the near future, you can also park your money in a certificate of deposit. “CDs are a good option if you are comfortable locking in that money for a certain amount of time,” Thomasson says. “Make sure you have enough cash or other income through Social Security or your pension that you won’t need to tap the CD early.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Conservatives, don’t give up on higher education. That’s essentially the opposite of what conservative political activist Charlie Kirk, leader of the conservative youth organization, Turning Point USA, told a crowd of young people at CPAC, the annual Conservative Political Action Conference. Kirk’s main contentions are that college isn’t really needed for a good career and that college has radicalized youth. My advice is that it’s against the interests of conservatives to follow this advice.)

https://www1.cbn.com/cbnnews/us/2020/march/neither-refugees-nor-asylum-seekers-the-real-reason-these-migrants-are-coming-to-the-us-illegally
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Leaving to “Keep Up with the Joneses” “The people who die here die of old age in bed,” Bensman said. “So you can’t argue that people are fleeing this place. But what you can say is that people are leaving this place to keep up with the Joneses.” “People are telling us about something entirely different as a motive for going to the United States, and it has to do with envy. What I mean by envy, particularly, is house envy,” Bensman continued. “American dollars being sent back to the families here have been poured into huge, beautiful houses.” Guatemala receives more than ten billion dollars a year in remittances from its citizens who are living in the United States and sending their money back home. And a lot of that money – at least in this town – is being used for home construction. The people that are working in the United States send money to their family members and what few men are left in this town are very busy constructing houses. Two homes we saw under construction are 2,500 square feet. Many Guatemalans appear to be achieving the American dream by moving the American dream back to Guatemala. The Dream? To Build a Nice House Back in Guatemala Marcus Domingo’s sons are in Missouri, working jobs where they’re paid “under the table” and sending enough money home to build both of these houses. “See, the problem here is there aren’t any economic resources, no jobs for us, it’s only in the United States where there’s work that pays enough to do this because Guatemala is a poor country,” Domingo said. “Right now our dream is for each of us to build our own house so we can have a good life, buy a little piece of land, and put a little money in the bank so that we can better our situation. Everyone sees that some are building all this and everyone became preoccupied with fighting to have one for themselves,” he said.)

— How many votes did the Republican candidates in contested races get in your precinct? Below are the unofficial results from the DuPage County Election Division for my DuPage County Milton Township Precinct 9 in Wheaton. I do not recommend or endorse candidates in Republican primaries. I do not do that because my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes in the Milton Township Republican Organization (MTRO), DuPage County Republican Central Committee (DCRCC), and Illinois Republican Party (IRP) have been so successful in painting any recommendation or endorsement by me as being THE KISS OF DEATH for candidates. Further, the aforesaid do everything that they can to suppress the number of Republican primary ballots cast in my precinct because the more ballots that are cast, the greater the weighted vote that I have in MTRO, DCRCC, and IRP leadership elections. — Why the rich favor the Democrats – Peter Skurkiss (DIERSEN: Rich people have never had to pay the price of Affirmative Action, Diversity, or Inclusion. I should write a book about such rich people in Illinois, in DuPage County, in Milton Township, in Wheaton, in Wheaton’s West District, in my precinct, etc. I would focus on the aforesaid who focus on destroying me because I oppose patronage, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, and age discrimination.)
https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2020/03/why_the_rich_favor_the_democrats.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Why do the wealthy align with the Democrats? The answer may seem counter-intuitive, but it is really quite simple. It’s surely not ideals or high-minded principles. Nor is it ignorance. Rather, it boils down to raw self-interest. In his book, The Age of Entitlement: America Since the Sixties, Christopher Caldwell notes that rich Americans think themselves to be as vulnerable as blacks. They are a relatively small minority of the population. They fear being resented for their wealth and power and of having much of that taken from them. Accordingly, the wealthy seek to protect what is theirs by preventing strong majorities from forming by using the divide and conquer principle. As R.R. Reno writes when reviewing Caldwell’s book: “Therefore, the richest and most powerful people in America have strong incentives to support an anti-majoritarian political system.” He goes on: “Wealthy individuals shovel donations into elite institutions that incubate identity politics, which further fragments the nation and prevents the formation of majorities.” Some of the rotten fruit of the wealthy taking this approach include multiculturalism, massive immigration of diverse people, resistance to encouraging assimilation, racial strife, trying to turn white males into pariahs, and the promotion of gender confusion. Through it all, society is bombarded with the Orwellian mantra that “diversity is strength,” as if repeating it often enough can make it so. It is also why patriotism and a common American culture are so disparaged today. Those from the upper strata of society project the idea that if you’re a flag-waving American, you must be some kind of retrograde mouth-breathing yokel. The wealthy as a groups are content to dissolve the glue that holds the U.S. together. And it is all done to enhance and preserve their power, wealth, and influence. This is why they so hate Donald Trump. He strives to unite people and the country, although you’d never know that that is what the president is doing if you live in the media bubble. Trump’s MAGA agenda is an anathema to the managerial class.)

The 32-page report published by the Citizens’ Audit Review and Measure LL Oversight Committee has sparked criticism and concerns by a group of 24 Laguna Beach residents with professional backgrounds in finance, business, accounting, and auditing who argue the panel should have at least one certified public accountant with expertise in auditing. Considering the city’s reported revenues were more than $109 million in 2017-18, this watchdog cadre says the taxpayers would be better served with additional experienced eyes on the city’s ledger.)

DAILY HERALD
— Endorsement: Almiron for Republicans in primary for DuPage County recorder
https://www.dailyherald.com/news/20200228/endorsement-almiron-for-republicans-in-primary-for-dupage-county-recorder
(FROM THE ENDORSEMENT: It’s easy to understand why both candidates for the Republican nomination for DuPage County recorder consider the position a perfect fit for their credentials. Ron Almiron, an attorney from Wheaton, has a long and deep history of service in local projects, service agencies, school and community boards and even more recently treasurer and CFO for the Wheaton Mosquito Abatement District. Babette Holder Youngberg, a communications professional from Wheaton, boasts a long history in real estate and property management that is specifically relevant to the duties of this office. Both candidates speak knowledgeably and think creatively about a role that demands a disciplined combination of attention to detail and customer service. Choosing between them is no simple matter for voters. The distinction for us comes down to depth of community involvement and level of detail in the vision for the office. Almiron’s diverse range of community, school and government activities gives him a slightly more refined sense for operating a government office, and he approaches the role with compelling intensity. Whoever ultimately wins the election in November, there is a possibility he or she will not serve long. If voters approve a consolidation measure in the General Election, the elected recorder’s position will be eliminated and the duties folded into other county offices. Youngberg and Almiron argue that the public is best served by an elected recorder but both agree to work cooperatively toward a smooth transition if voters decide to eliminate the office. Republican voters can’t go wrong with either candidate in this primary. Our choice is Almiron.)
— Endorsement: Grogan for Republicans for DuPage County auditor
https://www.dailyherald.com/news/20200228/endorsement-grogan-for-republicans-for-dupage-county-auditor
(FROM THE ENDORSEMENT: In nearly 12 years as DuPage County auditor, Bob Grogan has produced an impressive reputation for transparency, efficiency and competence. With justifiable pride, the Downers Grove Republican points to various state firsts he has implemented — including the first county checkbook online, the first transparency portal and the first auditor hotline. He has served as the president of the Association of Illinois County Auditors and notes that he knows how “to ask the awkward questions” that an auditor must raise when working with county officials to fix errors, find wrongdoing or just make things work better. His challenger for the party’s nomination in the March 17 primary is retired bank officer Jeffrey Mack, of Downers Grove. Mack has an appropriate financial background for auditor and a reasonable familiarity with the duties of the office. His strongest argument, however, is that he could bring a “fresh set of eyes” to the operation. That’s not an irrelevant point, but Mack doesn’t build on it by demonstrating why a new perspective alone would justify replacing an auditor with Grogan’s record and credentials. Grogan is Republicans’ strongest alternative for the November ballot, and he gets our endorsement.)

They painted what GAO Analysts do as being a unique “trade or occupation.” They would not have done that if I had been a Democrat, minority, female, or veteran.
