http://www.wicz.com/story/42219904/the-partisan-chasm-over-systemic-racism-is-on-full-display
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The throngs of protesters demanding systemic changes in policing are marching directly into one of the deepest chasms between the two political parties. The belief that widespread racism is no longer a problem in American society has become one of the core convictions uniting the modern Republican coalition, especially in the Donald Trump era, polls have found. Several academic studies found the belief that discrimination against minorities (and women) is no longer a problem was a far better predictor of support for Trump in 2016 than economic anxiety. Democrats of all races, by contrast, are much more likely to say that discrimination against African Americans, including in their interactions with police, remains a structural feature of American society. In surveys by the nonpartisan Public Religion Research Institute, Americans who support Trump were far more likely than those who don’t to say that police shootings of black men are only isolated incidents and to claim that discrimination against whites is now as great a problem as bias against minorities. This contrast looms heavily over the partisan reaction to the current eruption of protest. Since George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis last month, a chorus of prominent conservative voices have insisted it is a “lie” to describe racial discrimination as a pervasive problem. And, while some polls conducted amid the upsurge of protest hint that more Republicans may see discrimination as a problem, generally the surveys have documented the persistence of a huge gap between the parties on the issue. That divergence has big implications for both policy and politics. In policy terms, it helps explain why Trump’s Justice Department, while initiating an inquiry into the specific circumstances of Floyd’s death, has effectively shelved efforts under former President Barack Obama to examine systematic bias in city police departments through so-called pattern and practice investigations. Appearing Sunday on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Attorney General William Barr rejected such an investigation of the Minneapolis Police Department and argued that while individual “bad cops” remain a problem in forces around the country, “I don’t think that the law enforcement system is systemically racist.” Politically, the heightened focus on police behavior and racial inequities more broadly could compel Trump to squeeze out bigger margins and turnout from the white constituencies most skeptical that racism remains a widespread problem, in order to offset what could be a further decline in November among the groups in all races that do consider bias an enduring blight on American life. In that way, this latest crisis could force Trump to further double down on the underlying political bet he is imposing on the GOP: squeezing bigger margins from shrinking groups at the price of alienating groups in society that are growing. Brian Schaffner, a political scientist at Tufts University who has conducted some of the central research on the role of racist and sexist attitudes in the 2016 vote, says that prospect leaves Trump navigating a very thin path. Comparing the election results in 2018 with those in 2016, his research found that House Republican candidates lost more ground among voters who agree that racism and sexism remain problems than they gained among those who do not. “In 2018, Republican House candidates paid a pretty significant penalty for being tied to his racist and sexist views,” Schaffner says. Trump faces the same risk in November, he believes. Partisan opinion gap emerges — and widens American public opinion about race is complex and contradictory, and, particularly among whites, it has not moved in a straight line. But the general pattern is that for decades most Americans, especially whites, concluded — despite evidence to the contrary — that the civil rights revolution of the 1960s defanged racial discrimination and created a situation in which African Americans had equal opportunity with whites. . .Trump’s reelection chances could be affected Schaffner, the political scientist, says there is “a lot to unpack” to understand why many whites, primarily but not entirely in the GOP, reject the idea that discrimination is an ongoing problem.)

NATIONAL REVIEW
— The Return of Exclusivity – MICHAEL BRENDAN DOUGHERTY (DIERSEN: Since 2000 when I was 52 years old, my critics/opponents have been beyond furious that I have had the time and the money needed to put GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails together and to send them out free of charge and without any advertising or forced survey questions. I have that time and that money because my Democrat GAO superiors succeeded in forcing me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old. Why was I eligible to take early retirement? I had worked for the federal government for almost 30 years – almost 18 years working for GAO 1980-1997, almost 9 years working for IRS 1971-1980, and almost 3 years working for the Post Office 1966-1969. The last 11 years that I worked for GAO was at the GS-13 Step 1-10 levels, currently $101,176-$131,532/year. My critics/opponents paint my Civil Service Retirement System pension and my federal health, dental, and vision insurance subsidy as being an “unfair advantage.” My critics/opponents would never stoop to take the federal jobs that I did. I should write a book about my critics/opponents who have not and would not seek a job with the federal government a) because the pay and benefits are terrible, b) because the advancement opportunities are terrible, c) because they lack required education, work experience, professional certifications, and/or professional licenses, d) because they cannot pass an employment examination, e) because they cannot pass a background investigation, and/or f) because they cannot pass a physical examination.)

— During coronavirus pandemic, essentials are the new protected class – Michael Goodwin (DIERSEN: Democrats promote dependency on government. Republicans are supposed to promote individual responsibility.)
https://nypost.com/2020/05/23/coronavirus-is-boom-time-for-socialists-goodwin/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: For socialists and those who lean that way, pandemic time is boom time. Washington is printing and spending money like never before and both parties support sending cash to businesses and the unemployed. Rent and mortgage payments are being deferred, Medicare-for-all is getting a second look and support is growing for a program that would take the nation across the economic Rubicon — a guaranteed basic income. Seldom is heard those cautionary words of yesteryear, “moral hazard.” A time of great need and fear is shattering any stigma about being on the dole. A logical conclusion is that politics will follow culture and Bernie Sanders- and AOC-types will call the shots in America. Unless Republicans and conservatives get on board, they will be consigned to history’s dustbin. Perhaps. But pay attention to another potential reaction to the pandemic. Think of it as the revenge of the nonessentials.)

— The GOP Is the Problem. Is ‘Human Identity Politics’ the Solution? – Eric Levitz
https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/05/polarization-republicans-democracy-ezra-klein-book-review.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A large minority of African-American Democrats are social conservatives who believe that it is “always wrong” for two people of the same sex to engage in intercourse. One-third of Democratic voters believe that discrimination against whites is at least as big of a problem in the U.S. as discrimination against blacks. And for all of the talk of blue America’s supposed multiculturalism, a majority of Democratic voters agree with the statement “speaking English is essential for being a true American.” In other words: It isn’t actually the case that the median Democrat lacks all connection to the Republican Party’s dominant identity groups. There simply are not enough nonwhite (and/or enlightened white), secular, cosmopolitan, urban-dwelling people in the U.S. for a national party to be predominantly composed of them.)

https://www.jdsupra.com/legalnews/age-is-more-than-a-number-trends-in-89175/

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Various factors have created a workplace phenomenon that is both underreported and underestimated: an aging workforce and increasing incidence of age discrimination. As people in this country are living longer, the cost of living continues to rise, and the pension model nears extinction, many older Americans continue to work well into their 70’s. Combine that with stereotypes borne of both bygone eras and the current tech-forward attitudes of the younger workforce, and the incidence of age-based discrimination in the workplace is increasing – though the problem is not typically viewed or treated as seriously as other forms of discrimination. Despite laws in place to protect older workers, many hurdles exist in identifying and addressing the issue.)

Facebook’s attempts to make amends culminated with Mark Zuckerberg submitting to an onstage interview with a triumphant News Corp C.E.O., Robert Thomson, who began by asking drolly, “What took you so long?” And publishers believed that Facebook had legitimately begun to address an important issue by compensating news organizations for their work.)

— When Can You Afford to Retire? Questions to ask yourself if you’re considering early retirement. – Tammy Flanagan (DIERSEN: I should write a book about early retirement.)
https://www.govexec.com/pay-benefits/2020/05/when-can-you-afford-retire/165229/

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Would you like to retire at your minimum retirement age (55-57, depending on your year of birth) under the Federal Employees Retirement System? That decision will depend not just on your age, but whether or not you can afford to leave the working world behind. The three parts of FERS retirement—an annuity (including a supplement for some of those who retire early), Social Security benefits, and personal investments in the Thrift Savings Plan—were designed to work together to provide the income needed in retirement. How early you personally can comfortably retire requires asking yourself the following questions: How much income will you need to cover your expenses? Will you have enough income to last the rest of your life? Have you considered the tax implications of your financial decisions? Have you accounted for future inflation? Have you factored in unforeseen future events, such as the potential need for long term care and the volatility of your investments? Do you plan to continue to work after you retire from federal service? Can you afford to delay claiming Social Security retirement? Do you understand how much net income you’ll get from your FERS retirement benefit after reductions and withholdings? If you are married, have you considered your income requirements while you and your spouse are both living, but also when one of you may become the survivor? Do you have others who depend on you for financial support?)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Mendrick said his department expected about 250 vehicles for the parade, but 400 showed up in a parking lot at Route 59 and North Avenue in West Chicago. “It shocked me when I saw it,” Mendrick said. “The first thing I said was this is not a good thing.” The sheriff said people spontaneously showed up after information about the parade and the route was posted on social media. He said his department underestimated the public’s desire to be outdoors and participate in “something overwhelmingly positive. ”We didn’t really know how much society needed to get out,” Mendrick said. He said the people he observed wore masks or maintained the proper distance from each other. To prevent social distancing issues, Mendrick said within five minutes of his arrival he told drivers to get in their vehicles, and the lot was emptied within 30 minutes. Seeing the hundreds of people lining the streets, socially distanced in their own yards, to watch the parade was very positive. “It was a heart-warming thing to see,” Mendrick said.)
