(FROM THE ARTICLE: Gov. Bruce Rauner gave his party’s presumptive presidential nominee the cold shoulder on Tuesday. The Republican governor announced the formation of a school funding commission at the Thompson Center while Donald Trump was in town for a fundraiser just blocks away. Rauner instructed reporters to keep their questions focused on the commission. Some strayed off topic anyway and asked the governor why he was not joining the presumptive leader of his party. Rauner declined to comment. “I’ve said everything I’m going to say about the presidential race,” Rauner said. But the governor’s only public comments came in March when he told students in Wilmette that he was “horrified” by the rhetoric in the Republican presidential campaign and that “it’s ugly and it’s nasty and it’s weird.” He stopped short of mentioning Trump’s name. That same month, he also promised to back the eventual Republican nominee, regardless of who it would be. But he has refused to formally endorse Trump, declining to lead the Illinois delegation at the GOP Convention in Cleveland. In fact, he will not attend next week’s convention at all. On Tuesday, Rauner ignored a question about where he would be during the convention. Sen. Mark Kirk, a fellow Republican in the midst of a contentious re-election campaign, will also skip the convention. But he has taken a more aggressive approach toward the presumptive nominee. Kirk rescinded his support for Trump last month, saying in a statement, “After much consideration, I have concluded that Donald Trump has not demonstrated the temperament necessary to assume the greatest office in the world.” Last week Trump attacked Kirk for refusing to support him in a closed-door meeting with Senate Republicans on Capitol Hill. Kirk fired back, calling Trump an “Eastern, privileged, wealthy bully.” If a snub from a pair of Illinois politicians in his own party wasn’t enough, two demonstrations railed against Trump outside of Chicago’s Trump Tower. U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky, a Democrat, held a “Chicago Trumps Hate” protest while NextGen Climate Illinois and Latino Policy Forum’s A.C.C.E.S.S. student group protested Trump’s energy plan and his comments on immigrants and minorities.)

After a morning fundraiser in Chicago, Trump headed to a 6:30 p.m. private rally and fundraiser in Westerfield, Ind. There is much talk of who Trump’s running mate may be, especially after New Gingrich announced he has severed ties with the Fox News Channel as a paid contributor, a possibly sign that he may be rising on the shortlist. The pick is expected to be announced by the end of the week and includes a Hoosier on the short list. “I think the opportunity for Hoosiers to hear from him directly is exciting. I look forward to joining him there and if he wants me to bring a few words, I’d be happy to,” said Indiana Governor Mike Pence. “I’m just as anxious as the rest of you are on who the VP pick is,” said House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) Tuesday. While the Speaker would rather focus on the veep-stakes than his own issues with his party’s candidate, others are being blunt. “I can’t vote for Hillary Clinton and I can’t vote for Donald Trump, and it breaks my heart,” says Jeb Bush. Bush, who was essentially ridiculed out of the race by Trump, told NBC the brash businessman doesn’t have the trustworthiness to be president. “Simply put there’s a threshold anyone who walks into the Oval Office must pass and I don’t think Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump pass that threshold,” he said. But outside Trump’s Indiana event, supporters see their candidate as tough in turbulent times. “I feel we have very little respect for law enforcement with the current administration. Plus I’d like to see secure borders, safety for my grandchildren,” said Gary McGinnis, Trump supporters.)

Although all 13 filed the proper papers to run as Republicans and were subsequently elected by GOP voters in the March 15 primary (most running unopposed), the county party declared them ineligible for office under a new loyalty bylaw. The Republican rule, enacted a week before Election Day but after early voting had already started, holds that candidates for ward committeeman may not have voted in another party’s primary during the previous eight years. Each of the 13 ousted GOP committeemen had pulled a Democratic ballot at least once during that period, Republican officials say. The committeemen have disputed their removal on the basis that they met all state legal requirements for the office, which do not include any test based on how they’ve voted in the past.
