CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— DuPage committee kills effort to revoke video gaming ban – Gary Gibula  (DIERSEN: OUTSTANDING! At the DuPage County Finance Committee meeting Tuesday morning, June 13, 2017, no motion was made to recommend lifting the county’s ban on video gambling in unincorporated areas. During the public comment period, those who spoke in favor of keeping the ban included Bill Bryan, Kathy Gilroy, Heidi Holan, Luke Holan, and me. During county employee Chad Shaffer’s presentation concerning video gambling, county board members asked many questions and expressed their views concerning the issue. Many thanks to those county board members who would have voted against recommending lifting the ban if a motion had been made. Attendees at the meeting included Paula McGowen and John Zaruba.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Advocates of keeping the video gaming ban contend the negative effects of gambling outweigh any benefits. “We should be thinking of marriages and families broken up by gambling, how many jobs have been lost,” Bill Bryan, of Naperville, said. “Those factors should be weighed into the equation.” Heidi Holan, of Glen Ellyn, compared gambling to a “get rich quick” scheme. “How many of you warn your children about that?” she asked. “Is that the type of moral value you want?” “It has a trickle-down effect to family members,” said Luke Cohen, of Glen Ellyn. “I’m only 18, so I can’t gamble and I can’t drink, but I still understand the effect of gambling. This ban needs to stay in place.” . . . Cronin commented on the issue following Tuesday’s County Board meeting. “We owed it to the community and the business owners who are experiencing some adversity to come on in and make their case,” Cronin said. “I have some empathy for those folks, but I think there’s a larger issue here about who we are as a county. The committee spoke, there was due process and the people had their day.”  The issue of repealing the video gaming ban still could be revisited in the future if a committee member chooses to bring it up again, officials said.)
