June 13 Morning Edition

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— OUTSTANDING! At the DuPage County Finance Committee meeting Tuesday morning, June 13, 2017, no motion was made to recommend lifting the county’s ban on video gambling in unincorporated areas. During the public comment period, those who spoke in favor of keeping the ban included Bill Bryan, Kathy Gilroy, Heidi Holan, Luke Holan, and me. During county employee Chad Shaffer’s presentation concerning video gambling, county board members asked many questions and expressed their views concerning the issue. Many thanks to those county board members who would have voted against recommending lifting the ban if a motion had been made. Attendees at the meeting included Paula McGowen and John Zaruba. – Dave Diersen

(FROM THE ARTICLE: But after listening to people on both sides of the debate, board members ended their finance committee meeting without making a recommendation to the full county board. In fact, none of the 18 board members attending the meeting supported a motion to consider repealing the ordinance. “So there’s no interest in even discussing the issue,” said county board member Paul Fichtner, who serves as chairman of the board’s finance committee. “The issue is dead and nobody, obviously, is in favor of it.” . . . A few board members said there were questions that weren’t answered during Tuesday’s review, but no one expressed a desire to bring the issue back in two weeks. “It couldn’t even get a motion,” board member Tim Elliott said. “So I think that in fairness to board members that have questions, (staff) can get back, write a memo and do whatever. “But as far as I’m concerned, this is dead,” he said.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Marc Lifshin doesn’t mince words when asked about his living situation as an undergrad at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He paid about $175 a month in rent to live in a decrepit six-bedroom house with eight friends. “I lived in an absolute shithole,” says Lifshin, an engineering student who graduated in 2001. “I think it was torn down a couple years after I graduated.” Today, Lifshin, 39, operates at the other end of the student housing market, renting out high-end buildings to college students willing to pay up for indulgent amenities. While Lifshin the college student was content just to have a big backyard and front porch, his company, Core Spaces, develops buildings with golf simulators, spas with plunge pools and tanning beds, and in-room hot tubs. A Core Spaces project in Madison, Wis., includes a band room and ice rink in the winter.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: There’s one interesting wrinkle to the Pew data: While the U.S. middle-income segment is smaller than in European countries, it takes a higher income overall to make it into that group. The median income for a middle-class household in Italy is $35,608. It’s $44,000 in France and $46,000 in Denmark. But in the United States it’s $60,084.)
