(FROM THE ARTICLE: STAYING SAFE: The shooting death of Charlie Kirk is prompting Illinois politicians and government leaders from both major parties to ramp up security. Republicans and Democrats are rethinking safety — from campaign events to press conferences. The pivot: Congresswoman Delia Ramirez, a Democrat, moved an outdoor press conference indoors on Thursday out of caution. Some members of the Chicago City Council sent a letter Thursday to Police Superintendent Larry Snelling and Chicago Corporation Counsel Mary Richardson-Lowry urging a review of safety protocols. “Over the last eighteen months, the Council Chamber has seen many rancorous meetings, City Council members needing escorts out of the building and protective services because of the subjects discussed and votes taken. Local ward offices have found themselves vandalized with graffiti, guillotine stickers, and more,” the City Council members wrote. Their full letter is here. They emphasized that the council, which has “long been an open, accessible body” to the residents, “must not leave its members’ safety to chance.” And Republicans are also zeroing in on security. James Mendrick, the DuPage County sheriff who’s running in the GOP primary for governor, contacted his opponents to offer advice on how to handle safety as the race intensifies. Dual duty: “I’m running for office, but I’m also the sheriff and have to make sure that everybody’s safe,” Mendrick told your Playbook host about making the unusual move to help opponents. He’s especially worried about “copycat” incidents. Mendrick’s suggestions to his GOP primary foes included moving campaign events indoors for a while, keeping track of who enters an event and having a “spotter” monitor the crowd. Unlikely unity: Aaron Del Mar, who is Darren Bailey’s lieutenant governor running mate, welcomed the outreach. “I don’t like plugging opponents,” he said. “But it’s a good sign for our Illinois Republican ecosystem, so I’ll take that call.” Suiting up: Del Mar spoke before heading out to purchase a bullet-proof vest.)
