— Champaign County Republicans working on 2020 vision – Debra Pressey
http://www.news-gazette.com/news/local/2018-11-25/champaign-county-republicans-working-2020-vision.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Less than three weeks after a brutal election outcome for Champaign County Republicans, they’re looking down the road at the next big challenge. That is: How to avoid another blue sweep of countywide offices in 2020. Six Champaign County-wide offices will be up for election when Americans choose their next president — county coroner, county recorder, circuit clerk, state’s attorney, circuit judge and county auditor. Democrat George Danos won the auditor’s office in the Nov. 6 election for a two-year unexpired term — which places the office back in play in 2020. And Circuit Judge Jason Bohm said he’ll be running as a Republican in his first election after being appointed to the bench earlier this year. Three other countywide offices up for election are currently held by Republicans — Circuit Clerk Katie Blakeman, Coroner Duane Northrup and Recorder Mark Shelden — and all three said they plan to run again in 2020. . .He sees three issues for his party to address. One is acknowledging it wasn’t a single problem — such as voter dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump — but multiple problems in the last election, “and we have to identify what those problems are and mitigate the ones we can’t get rid of,” he said. . .The Trump factor Republican county board member Jon Rector is also in a seat up for election in 2020. In 2016, he won by just 38 votes, “and two years from now, with what’s happening at the top of the ticket with the Republicans, it’ll be a challenge,” he said. . .Given his promise to always vote his conscience first and his party second on the county board, Rector said he found it disappointing that many voters didn’t do their homework. “These students on campus are so bright, and all they went by — they were told that Donald Trump is horrible and don’t vote for any local ‘R,'” he said. “I applaud them for voting, but they need to do their homework.” A particular challenge for Republicans at the local level, Shelden said, is that the average students who live outside the area but vote in Champaign County naturally gravitate toward national politics. “For the Republican Party, we absolutely need to have a better message for younger voters,” he said. Republican John Farney, who will be handing over the county treasurer’s office to Democratic opponent Laurel Prussing next month, said he ran his most grassroots campaign ever in the recent election — but work done by him and fellow GOP candidates couldn’t trump voter dissatisfaction with Washington. Some of the feedback he has gotten post-election is that he didn’t do enough to position himself as anti-Trump, Farney said, though he doesn’t see that making a difference. “A certain segment of the voting population sees Republican and thinks Trump, especially folks who are not tied into local issues,” he said. Despite the outcome, Farney said he still regards the campaign as having been a great experience — though he doubts he’ll ever run for office again. “I have a sense of relief that has come over me,” he said. “There are a lot of issues facing county government, and, quite honestly, the keys to the castle have been handed over to the local Democrats, and they’re going to have a lot of decisions to make over the next few years. And I wish them the best of luck.”)

WASHINGTON TIMES
— Trump and the ongoing culture war – Robert Knight
https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2018/nov/25/trump-and-the-ongoing-culture-war/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Since November 2016, the media and the progressive left have been pounding the same two claims. The first is that Donald Trump was not really elected, since Hillary Clinton got more popular votes. The second is that anyone who voted for Mr. Trump or supports him today is a white male supremacist bigot. And probably homophobic and xenophobic to boot. Regardless of actual race or sex. Regarding the first claim, Hillary’s national margin of 2.8 million votes can be explained entirely by California, which has become a one-party, socialist state with enormous potential for vote fraud. Mrs. Clinton collected 4.3 million more votes in the Golden State than Mr. Trump, and, as Investor’s Business Daily noted after the final count, “If you take California out of the popular vote equation, then Trump wins the rest of the country by 1.4 million votes. And if California voted like every other Democratic state — where Clinton averaged 53.5 percent wins — Clinton and Trump end up in a virtual popular vote tie.” There weren’t even any Republicans on the ballot in the U.S. Senate race, and no Republicans were running for House seats in nine of California’s 53 congressional districts, of which 45 now are represented by Democrats.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: So why should we be glad for this mediocre performance? Because the Democrats dominate education, the media and Hollywood (they also dominate the legal system, but that’s another story for another day). And aging hippy Baby Boomers have raised the latest generation of adults, the Millennials. We should have done worse. The Democrats spent years brainwashing our children in the public schools and universities. K-12 and college youth are now taught that Republican ideals are racist, sexist, homophobic — so wrong that they must be censored out of society. Those who disagree with this groupthink are punished. It takes guts to stand up and be a pariah among your fellow students and risk getting a bad grade from your teachers. Democrats constitute 41 percent of K-12 teachers. Only 27 percent are Republicans. Half voted for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election, in contrast to 29 percent for Donald Trump. The school administration forces liberal curriculum on the teachers, which counters any conservatism they may have. Democratic professors in college outnumber Republicans even worse, 10 to 1. The Harvard University faculty backs Democrats 96 percent of the time. One of the few faculty members there who is not a Democrat was too afraid to comment about it. “Sorry, but the smart thing for me to do about this kind of issue is not to comment!” he said when asked for a comment by Fox News. The Democrats control most of the media, constantly spinning the news to make Republicans look mean and Democrats look like saints. More than 96 percent of donations from media figures to either of the two major-party presidential candidates went to Hillary Clinton. The three major TV broadcast networks have the most hostile coverage of a president in TV news history — 92 percent. Only eight percent of the coverage of Trump is positive. Hollywood movies do the same thing. I just watched “The First Purge,” which is a classic example of this bias. It features a party in power known as “The New Founding Fathers of America.” This administration starts a “purge,” where for one day a year, crime is legal and people are free to go around murdering other people and committing any crime they want. The NRA supports the purge. The administration justifies it with the need for population control of poor people. It’s the same old tired Hollywood plot to portray Republicans as evil and Democrats as righteous moral crusaders. Beautiful minorities comprise the opposition fighting back against this oppressive regime. Republicans are always portrayed as old white men and Democrats as that attractive person you’d like to be friends with. Teenage minds are more impressionable than adults; what are they going to think of the mostly white (translate: racist) party that wants to murder poor people? None of the stereotypes are accurate, it’s become pretty well-known lately that Democrats were the party of racism, and there are plenty of minorities in the Republican Party who don’t buy into the Democrats’ lies. Millennials reached voting age after the worst of this indoctrination and consequently vote more Democratic than previous generations. This was also due to the influence of their left-leaning Baby Boomer parents. NPR exit polls from the midterm elections reported that two-thirds of people age 18-29 voted Democrat, which is a major bump from previous midterms. They also turned out in bigger numbers than they did in the last midterms. Young-adult turnout surged by 188 percent in early voting compared with 2014. One quarter of all voters now are Millennials. I’ve said for years during Barack Obama’s presidency that Republicans would need a celebrity in order to take back the White House due to the amount of indoctrination — and sure enough, along came Donald Trump. Trump was a Democrat for much of his adult life, and palled around with the top Hollywood elites. He was able to attract a portion of the population that is wowed by celebrities. He may not reflect conservative values perfectly due to his background, but to the left’s dismay, he is getting a lot accomplished for Republicans. And he is making significant inroads against the left’s dominance of the media by tweeting directly to the American people every day. Fortunately, there are signs things may be changing. The #WalkAway and BLEXIT movements are composed of minorities leaving the Democrat Party and exposing its deception. As technology continues to evolve, there are new areas of influence online opening up to influence the younger generations, bypassing education, the media, Hollywood and their parents. And the children of Gen X are now becoming adults, who are more conservative than the Millennials. There is some hope we haven’t lost it all.)

CBS NEWS
— Caravan confirms what Trump has been saying for weeks – Michael Graham
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/commentary-caravan-confirms-what-trump-has-been-saying-for-weeks/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: On Sunday, hundreds of would-be illegal immigrants gathered at the U.S. border to make a massive contribution to the Trump 2020 re-election campaign. They chanted that they weren’t bound by the idea of borders and laws (“We are not criminals! We are international workers!”). They hurled rocks at U.S. Border Patrol agents. They rushed the border itself, cutting holes in fencing and climbing walls. They forced authorities to use tear gas to protect themselves and turn back the mob. The San Ysidro Port of Entry was forced to close for more than five hours. In other words, they confirmed what President Trump has been saying for weeks about the caravan and what it represents. And, like clockwork, the president’s progressive opponents have been answering his extreme rhetoric with their own. The video of crowds of caravan participants pushing their way through border fencing or throwing rocks at uniformed Americans is disturbing. Even more disturbing is the fact that the caravan’s participants and organizers (like the subtly-named group “People Without Borders”) have been telegraphing their plans for weeks. Weeks ago, while media outlets criticized President Trump over the caravan issue and insisting that it posed no threat, actual participants were looking into TV cameras and announcing their intention to cross the U.S. border — no matter what. And now they’ve tried to do just that. The situation is so bad that Mexico’s interior department announced Sunday it will deport around 500 migrants because they ignored Mexican authorities and tried to cross the border “violently” and illegally.” Does it now seem so ludicrous to put a few thousand American soldiers at that border? The American Left still thinks so.)

— Conservatism Isn’t Dead Yet The great contradiction is between what liberals claim to believe and the way they live their own lives. – Bobby Jinda
https://www.wsj.com/articles/conservatism-isnt-dead-yet-1543176293
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Liberals rail against supposedly rampant structural inequalities, and cite disparate impacts as proof of inherent racism and sexism. Women and minorities are broadly disadvantaged, according to this perspective, due to the evils of “white privilege.” Structural bias counts more than individual effort, so that neither success nor failure is truly earned. . .Liberals embrace multiculturalism, claiming all cultures are at least morally and practically equivalent, while they also denigrate Western culture as intrinsically tied to a history of slavery and colonialism. College campuses are filled with students and professors arguing that America is the greatest threat to world peace and development. Yet despite the West’s imperfections, modern liberal democracy still offers the best governing system on earth to promote freedom and human dignity. Few women would willingly trade its equality for the female genital mutilations, child marriage, sex-selective abortions and other gender-based injustices found in other societies. Even a Churchillian acknowledgment from the left that American culture is the least-bad choice would be progress. Liberals have championed the sexual revolution to overturn traditional mores around ethics and marriage, and to promote freedom from restraint as the ultimate sexual—though not economic—good. Pursuing pleasure and abandoning restraint make for popular bumper stickers, song lyrics and movie plots. Yet the benefits of monogamy and fidelity, for both adults and the children they bring into the world, have been demonstrated repeatedly. Marriage and intact families are correlated with higher incomes, stronger economic growth, upward mobility, higher workforce-participation rates, decreased child poverty and lower dropout rates. Indeed, marriage is most common and more enduring among affluent, educated Americans. Liberal elites would rather folks do as they say, rather than as they do.)
