SOUTHERN
— Union County Democratic Party withdraws legal action over county board’s pick for state’s attorney – MOLLY PARKER (DIERSEN: What do you say to a) those who cast Republican primary ballots and/or sign Republican candidate petitions but who focus on destroying Republicans and b) those who do not cast primary ballots and/or do not sign candidate petitions but who focus on destroying Republicans?)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: In a statement to The Southern on Thursday, Union County Democratic Party Chair Teresa Vincent said that the county’s legal counsel has since provided her the necessary documentation establishing Klingemann’s affiliation to the Democratic Party. Klingemann, a private attorney in Marion who previously worked as an assistant state’s attorney with Edmonds, had not voted in primary elections, and was not active in party politics. The board confirmed his appointment by a 3-2 vote along party lines, with Republicans voting in favor of his confirmation and Democrats against. Union County Board Chairman Max Miller previously said that Klingemann stated to him during the interview process that he was a Democrat, which he said satisfied the party affiliation requirement under the law. But Vincent argued that Klingemann’s record was not sufficient to establish him as a Democrat. She pointed to a section of the law that specifically speaks to the replacement of state senators and representatives and defines party affiliation as follows: A person is a member of a party for 23 months after signing a petition for a candidate’s partisan candidacy for office, signing a petition joining a particular party, pulling a partisan primary ballot, running for partisan office or otherwise holding a partisan position such as state central committeeperson.)

RUSS STEWART
— BAIL-OUTS PROLIFERATE AMONG DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEEMEN
http://www.russstewart.com/articles/2019/09-11-19.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Here is a multiple-choice question for anyone who is still paying attention. A Chicago Democratic ward committeeman is (a) at the top of the political food chain, (b) at the bottom of the political food chain, (c) holds a non-paying post that is inconsequential, and/or (d) believes it’s a steppingstone to glory and power. Anybody who is now or has been a committeeman would answer (b) and (c). Anybody who aspires to and is running for committeeman in 2020 would answer (a) and (d). And everybody else, including this columnist, would give a resounding (c). After all, the sitting Democratic committeemen of the 1st, 39th, 40th, 41st, 45th and 49th wards, who were elected in 2016, lost 2019 bids to be elected or re-elected alderman, and the 50th Ward committeeman and the former 32nd Ward committeeman lost 2018 state senator and county commissioner races. Robert Murphy (39th) and Pat O’Connor (40th) lost the April 2 aldermanic runoff with, respectively, 44.1 and 46.2 percent. Proco Joe Moreno (1st), Tim Heneghan (41st), John Arena (45th) and Joe Moore (49th) lost the Feb. 26 primary with, respectively, 38.8, 29.7, 36.2 and 36.6 percent. And Ira Silverstein (50th) lost his Illinois 8th Senate District seat with 29.9 percent and John Fritchey (32nd) lost with 44.6 percent. They would surely answer the above question with a (b) and (c).)

THE HILL
— How important is candidate age? – MARK MELLMAN (DIERSEN: How old are you? I am 70. All my critics/opponents, all their operatives and all their dupes promote age discrimination a) because they want to get rid of those who are older than they are and/or b) because they want to curry favor with those who promote age discrimination.)
https://thehill.com/opinion/campaign/460812-mellman-how-important-is-candidate-age
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Candidates are not simply bundles of age, race and résumé. They have issue positions and priorities, personality traits and personal stories, that weren’t measured in these conjoint experiments. We don’t know how much age matters compared to those factors. More broadly, moving from the generic to the specific is not always clear cut. In our example, while 70 may be too old, not all 70-year olds are too old. That’s exactly what a new CBS YouGov poll on candidate age tells us. In response to questions specific to each candidate, just 37 percent said Sanders was “too old” to be president, 31 percent said Biden was and only 5 percent believed Warren is too old to be president. Polls seem to tell us that age is important. But failure to ask the right questions, in the right ways, can lead analysts and strategists astray.)

https://www.wsj.com/articles/one-argument-for-radical-income-transparency-11568167323
(FROM THE ARTICLE: How much do people actually know about the income and wealth of people who live around them? And how does what they think they know skew the way they think about government taxes and spending? Recent research we conducted suggests that the answer to those two questions are: Not much and a lot. An emerging body of research suggests that citizens’ preferences for spending on public goods—from social programs to health care to infrastructure—are based in part about who they believe contributes and benefits. However, we discovered that many people are unaware of the true extent of inequality where they live. And in some cases, their beliefs are dramatically different than reality.)
