ILLINOIS FAMILY INSTITUTE
— Community Opt-Out for Marijuana Dispensaries – David E. Smith
https://illinoisfamily.org/marijuana-2/community-opt-out-for-marijuana-dispensaries/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Take
ACTION: Ask your local mayor, village trustees, aldermen and county board
members to pass an ordinance prohibiting marijuana dispensaries and marijuana
businesses in your community. The Village of Morton in central Illinois is the
first municipality to pass such an ordinance. Their ordinance can serve as a
template for other communities: Click HERE for this sample ordinance. Once it
is introduced, ask local pastors, local law enforcement officials, doctors,
counselors, fire chief and emergency personnel, teachers, school
administrators, activists and others in the community to write letters and
speak at public hearings in support of a ban on marijuana sales. Cover this
entire process in your prayers. Pray especially for the wisdom of local
officials who must vote on this proposal. . .Furthermore, it is important to
point out that six Republicans also supported this regressive policy to make
our highways less safe and to enslave our neighbors to addiction and mental
illness: Illinois State Senators Jason Barickman (Bloomington), Neil Anderson
(Moline), Steve McClure (Jacksonville), and Illinois State Representatives
Allen Skillicorn (Crystal Lake), Lindsay Parkhurst (Kankakee), and David Welter
(Morris) voted in favor of this anti-family policy. In their desperation to
find a new revenue source to fix the financial mess they created (and/or to
promote a so-called “social justice” antidote), these lawmakers failed sorely
in their job to protect Illinois citizens.)
CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— OUTSTANDING: Naperville City Council takes first step toward opting out of
the retail sale of recreational pot – ERIN HEGARTY
https://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/naperville-sun/ct-nvs-retail-marijuana-sale-naperville-council-st-20190717-rb6gxuw4lzaetie2wupsb6vtfm-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The
Naperville City Council appears ready to say no the selling recreational
marijuana in the city. Members voted 5-4 Tuesday to direct staff to prepare the
documentation needed to opt out of the retail sale of adult-use cannabis under
the terms of the new state law, which goes into effect Jan. 1. The vote came
after public comment from more than 15 people, including two businesses that
want permission to sell pot in the city and representatives from behavioral
health centers who are opposed to it. Council members Theresa Sullivan, Patty
Gustin, Paul Hinterlong, Kevin Coyne and Patrick Kelly voted to opt out of
allowing the retail sale of recreational cannabis. Those voting in favor were
Benny White, Judy Brodhead, John Krummen and Mayor Steve Chirico. . .Residents
and council members who spoke against the selling it in Naperville said it to
approve it would be contrary to the city’s positive image, detrimental to public
safety and potentially harmful to youth. “There is nothing family friendly
about recreational marijuana. Family friendly is Naperville’s brand,” resident
Jennifer Taylor said. . .Gustin reminded her fellow council members that while
there may be benefits from a medical standpoint, the sale and use of marijuana
is still against the law in the eyes of the U.S. government. “This is a
federally illegal product,” Gustin said. “The federal government has not
legalized marijuana because it’s a drug. Selling recreational marijuana will
draw the nuisance to Naperville.” With Tuesday’s vote, city staff will prepare
the necessary documents for an official council vote to opt out of the retail
sale of recreational marijuana later in the year. . .Councilman Coyne said
allowing recreational marijuana just because the city already sells alcohol and
cigarettes doesn’t make sense. “We should allow and accept marijuana because
alcohol is already here. We have one bad habit in town, so we should add
another? I don’t buy into that,” Coyne said. Matt Quinn, community relations
coordinator with Rosecrance, said teens perceive marijuana use as less risky
than they did in the past. Quinn urged council to “not be naive” about the law
requiring pot consumers to be 21 or older. Teens push boundaries, he said.)
