But then I saw that my high school neighbor friend in Crete was on track to getting accepted by UIC and commuting to/from classes at UIC from his parents’ home. I adopted that plan, I took college preparatory classes, got an ACT score of 24, and I graduated in the upper 20% of my 1966 Crete-Monee High School class. My high school neighbor friend commuted in a new 1965 base Chevelle that his father bought for him. I commuted in a new 1966 Pontiac Tempest Sprint that I paid for with money that I earned washing dishes for 28 hours a week during my junior and senior years 1964-1966 and for 40 hours a week during the summer of 1965.

Therefore, to pay for my UIC and then NIU college expenses and to pay for new cars to drive to/from my parents’ home in Crete to classes at UIC and then NIU, I spent far too many hours washing dishes during my junior and senior years at Crete-Monee, during my first 2 years at UIC and my first semester at NIU. Therefore, my ACT score and my GPAs were lower. Therefore, when I graduated, the only job offer I got did not really require a college degree. I acknowledge that my wanting new cars resulted in a) my working more hours and b) my ACT score and GPAs being lower.
