CBS NEWS
— Young applicants discuss the challenges of today’s job search. DD: When you graduated from college, what harmed your job search? When I graduated from NIU with a bachelor’s degree in management when I was 21 in 1970, potential employers saw me as being draft bait. They did not believe that my application for a financial hardship draft deferment to help support my mother and brother would be approved. Further, potential employers were under tremendous pressure to hire minorities and females. Consequently, I accepted the only job offer that I got, to be the Retail Sales Manager in a Firestone Store, a job that did not really require a college degree. Because my future there was bleak, I accepted a job offer from Oldsmobile in 1971. But Oldsmobile withdrew that offer saying it had just agreed to stop hiring Whites to settle an EEOC complaint. My Firestone Store boss rudely fired me because I had accepted that offer. Because I had to have a job, I accepted a job offer that I got from IRS to be a Revenue Officer. I had taken and passed the Federal Service Entrance Examination while I was a NIU student as a backup because I knew that private sector employers look down on federal employees and I had been a federal employee for almost 3 years.

NBC NEWS
— Susan Collins and Troy Jackson clash over seniority in Maine’s first Senate debate. She pitched her seniority — and her perch as chair of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee — as a boost to Maine. In her closing statement, Collins said: “To be effective in the Senate, you need knowledge, experience, seniority and relationships. That combination has allowed me to pass bipartisan legislation.” DD: For federal employees, seniority brings many benefits, including more sick leave and annual leave. My Democrat IRS superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates were furious when I started as an IRS employee when I was 22 in 1971 because I brought with me almost 3 years of full-time federal seniority that I had earned working part-time for the Post Office 1966-1969 and lots of unused sick leave. My Democrat GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates were even more furious that when I started as a GAO employee when I was 31 in 1980 because I brought with me the aforesaid postal seniority plus almost 9 years of seniority that I had earned working for IRS and lots of unused sick leave and annual leave. They were even more beyond furious when my federal seniority gave me the option to take early retirement wan I was 45 in 1993. But my having almost 30 years of seniority did not stop my Democrat GAO superiors from forcing me to retire when I was 49 in 1997.

For me, it included my qualifying myself for better paying jobs by earning a job-related bachelor’s degree in 1970, job-related master’s degrees in 1976, 1980, and 1997, job-related professional certifications in 1979, 1981, 1990, 1994, 1996, and 1997, and a job-related professional license in 1981.
