(FROM THE ARTICLE: We report all too often on the gun violence that cuts short the lives of young people in our city.  But one Chicago-area college student is trying to re-write that script, and the Democratic National Convention could end up being her ticket to a better life. At first glance, Christine Williams, 19, looks like every other volunteer working at the Wells Fargo Center. She checks DNC credentials and shows people to their seats. But, this Aurora University sophomore is so much more. Williams is from Chicago’s Austin neighborhood, a high crime area, prone to gun violence.  She even knows people who have been shot. But she wants something different for herself and her 2-year-old daughter. “I have goals, I have dreams, I have big dreams,” Christine says. She’s among a handful of college students from across the country picked by the Washington Center, a DC based nonprofit organization, to work at the Democratic National Convention.  With a nearly 3.8 GPA, the political science and business administration major, who’s also minoring in accounting and international studies, hopes this experience will lead to bigger and better things. The trip to Philly was Williams’ first plane ride ever. She admits she wasn’t really into the political process – at first – but now she one day hopes to run for political office, maybe congress or even president, thanks to Hillary Clinton. She knows most people don’t expect someone like her, a teenage mother from the West Side of Chicago, to end up successful. But that’s only pushing her to do more. “It allows me to give my community a voice, and how that just because you’re from a certain part, certain area, doesn’t mean that you can’t become something in life,” she said. Trump is looking to hire 78 servers, housekeepers, and cooks for his Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach and the nearby Trump National Golf Club in Jupiter, according to Federal labor records. As he has for years, the Republican presidential nominee filed this month to import foreign workers for the jobs instead of hiring Americans, Buzzfeed News first reported Wednesday. Department of Labor records show Trump has sought H-2 visas for hundreds of foreigners to fill temporary positions at the two properties in recent years. The visas are issued through a legal program that allows employers to temporarily hire foreign workers when there are no Americans available to do the work. The writeup (which is password protected or we’d include a link) describes Sandack working to take down two fake accounts on Twitter and 10 on Facebook, which purported to behave as Sandack accounts. In the midst of this, Sandack says he experiences a moment of clarity, realizing he doesn’t want to miss any more of his kids’ events. What was missing from the CapFax piece was any description as to what actually happened on these fake accounts. Had they actually posted content pretending to be Sandack? Were they threatening? Embarrassing? The piece said Sandack filed a police report. Beside Sandack, the other person quoted in the CapFax writeup was a recent Rauner appointee, John Bambenek, who talked about how unusual and dangerous it was to have such an open attack against a public official. He also talked about the difficulty of prosecuting computer crimes. I’ve got a problem with that,” Sullivan said. Opponents are also concerned that reducing penalties for marijuana possession sends a message that it isn’t harmful. Lawmakers said they want to promote consistency in how minor marijuana offenses are handled. “We have a system where, where you live or what you look like determines whether you get a ticket,” said Democratic Rep. Kelly Cassidy of Chicago, another bill sponsor. The legislation would also require municipalities to purge citation records for possession every six months, unless local governments decide against it. Supporters of the bill argue people shouldn’t be saddled with lifelong criminal records for minor offenses that make it difficult to find employment or housing. When Rauner vetoed last year’s legislation, he said in a letter to lawmakers that the existing penalties for petty marijuana offenses are “too severe” and that “criminal prosecution of cannabis possession is also a drain on public resources.” He wrote that he supports “the fundamental purposes” of the initiative. He said he would sign the proposal if sponsors made changes he wanted. In the bill he vetoed, lawmakers wanted possession of up to 15 grams of marijuana to be a civil offense punishable with a fine between $55 and $125. Rauner wanted he threshold to be lower — 10 grams or less — and the fines higher — between $100 and $200. Rauner recommended the DUI standard for marijuana should be 5 nanograms of THC, marijuana’s intoxicating chemical, in a driver’s blood within two hours of consumption. Lawmakers initially proposed that the standard be 15 nanograms. Currently, any trace of marijuana is enough to be considered impaired, but pot advocates have long criticized zero-tolerance states’ approach because marijuana can stay in a person’s system for several weeks. The bill now on Rauner’s desk has included all of his suggestions.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: A writer and campaign activist who calls himself “GOPLifer” resigned from the party (Anthony Cuzzone, York Township, DuPage County, Illinois) over Donald Trump’s nomination as the Republican presidential candidate. Chris Ladd wrote in a letter he sent to his local party’s chairman (in suburban Chicago and posted to his blog Friday that “There is no redemption in being one of the ‘good Nazis.’”  He recalled attending his first county Republican convention as a teenager growing up in Texas, meeting “a young Rick Perry” on the future governor’s first statewide campaign and trudging through the Illinois snow as a campaign volunteer. Yet Ladd compared watching House Speaker Paul Ryan speak at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland to “the way a young child watches his father march off to prison.” Ladd blamed his departure on party leaders who “have decided on complicity” with Trump. “Our leaders’ compromise preserves their personal capital at our collective cost,” he wrote. “Their refusal to dissent robs all Republicans of moral cover. Evasion and cowardice has prevailed over conscience. We are now, and shall indefinitely remain, the Party of Donald Trump.” He continued, “I will not contribute my name, my work, or my character to an utterly indefensible cause. No sensible adult demands moral purity from a political party, but conscience is meaningless without constraints. “A party willing to lend its collective capital to Donald Trump has entered a compromise beyond any credible threshold of legitimacy. There is no redemption in being one of the ‘good Nazis.’” Ladd, who has written a book called ‘The Politics of Crazy,’ had warned in his most recent column in the Houston Chronicle in March that the party’s decision to “to embrace an entire platform of fiction” would force Republicans to “pay our debt to reality.” He went further in the letter and blog post, though. Ladd told a Twitter user who asked him what would become of his blog that he would replace it with a different one. “I hereby resign my position as a York Township Republican committeeman,” Ladd wrote in the letter. “My thirty-year tenure as a Republican is over.”)

The first-term senator still uses a wheelchair most of the time, but mentally, he says he’s fully recovered. Kirk has said he won’t endorse his party’s controversial presidential nominee, Donald Trump. He says he’ll write in retired Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Colin Powell, and urge others to do the same. “I don’t think Donald Trump would make a good commander-in-chief, he’s too emotional,” Kirk says of Trump. In many ways, and on many issues, Kirk seems closer to Democrats than Republicans. “I am a moderate, pro-choice pro-gay rights guy who wants to spend less and tax less,” Kirk says. He says he also bucks his party where the NRA is concerned. Levine asked Kirk about a series of controversial statements he has made in recent memory. That includes a reference last year to Chicago’s South Side, when he referred to an unmarried colleague as a “bro with no ho.” “When you’re in a race like I’m in, everything is taken the wrong way,” Kirk says. But then he almost immediately let fly another headscratcher about the therapeutic benefits of pinot grigio. He says the wine has helped him talk more clearly. “Suddenly, as the pinot grigio hit the brain stem, my speech abilities came back. And I said to my girlfriend, ‘OK, it’s going to be only pignot grigio.’”  Kirk has waged a long, hard battle to recover from that life-threatening stroke. Her quiet plan to wrest the speech away and make it her own set in motion the most embarrassing moment of the convention: word-for-word repetition of phrases and borrowed themes from Michelle Obama’s speech at the Democratic convention eight years ago. The ridicule from both Democrats and Republicans was instant and relentless, disrupting what was meant to be a high point of the convention. It was, by all accounts, an entirely preventable blunder, committed in front of an audience of 23 million television viewers, that exposed the weaknesses of an organization that has long spurned the safeguards of a modern presidential campaign, such as the free software that detects plagiarism. “It just shouldn’t have happened,” said Matt Latimer, a White House speechwriter for President George W. Bush. “This was an easy home run speech: a successful, attractive immigrant talking about her husband.” Nobody seemed more startled than Mr. and Ms. Trump, who arrived in New York on Tuesday morning after a flight from Cleveland to find themselves at the center of a bizarre uproar over authenticity, plagiarism and a knotty question: Why did the wife of the Republican nominee borrow passages from the wife of the current Democratic president? Ms. Trump spent most of Tuesday out of sight, while her husband vented his frustration and anger throughout the day. This account of how a speech written by professionals was transformed into the problematic version delivered on Monday night at the Quicken Loans Arena is based on interviews with more than a dozen people involved in and close to the Trump campaign. Many of them spoke on the condition of anonymity to disclose details that were supposed to remain confidential. It reinforces dominant themes of Mr. Trump’s campaign that still linger from the primary, which his team has struggled to change: a deliberately bare-bones campaign structure, a slapdash style and a reliance on the instincts of the candidate over the judgments of experienced political experts, like Mr. Scully and Mr. McConnell. The two original speechwriters were not aware of how significantly the speech had been changed until they saw Ms. Trump deliver it on television Monday night, along with the rest of the country. Just like Mrs. Obama, Ms. Trump explained how she wanted to pass those lessons on to her children and the children of the world. And just like Mrs. Obama, she offered a gauzy invocation about the limitlessness of aspirations when they are matched by determination. In a series of evolving explanations, Trump aides and allies dismissed the episode as a trivial distraction, alternating between outright denial that Ms. Trump’s speech had used word-for-word phrases from Mrs. Obama and blaming the news media. “Ninety-three percent of the speech is completely different,” declared Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Companies have tried everything to boost the stubbornly anemic numbers of women and minorities in management roles or in certain industries, such as tech or finance. They’re making candidates’ resumes blind to race and gender. Setting up partnerships with historically black colleges. Releasing demographic data in an exercise of public accountability – and humility. But perhaps the most common and seemingly elementary tactic – compulsory diversity training aimed at helping people’s biases or preventing discriminatory behavior – appears to actually do more harm than good. In the cover story of the latest issue of the Harvard Business Review, sociologists from Harvard and Tel Aviv universities explore the counterintuitive idea that some of the most common tools for improving diversity – one of which is mandatory training – are not just ineffective. They could be detrimental to improving the number of women and minorities in the managerial ranks. Making people attend diversity training may seem to make sense, said one of the study’s co-authors, Alexandra Kalev, in an interview: “But it doesn’t work. For decades, diversity management programs flourished with no evidence whatsoever about their effects and their success.” The article is based on a series of research papers by Kalev and Harvard’s Frank Dobbin that studied nearly 830 U.S. companies. It describes how, five years after implementing compulsory diversity training for managers, companies actually saw declines in the numbers of some demographic groups – African-American women and Asian-American men and women – and no improvement among white women and other minorities. “If someone is supposed to sit there, psychologically they will be grumpy,” she said. “They will not want to engage. This is what we do as human beings – we resist control.” The authors point to a range of past social science studies that have shown that efforts to reduce prejudice can backfire. The pair also say that when diversity training is just focused on a certain group – like managers or one where there’s been a bias problem – it can also have worse results. “When diversity training focuses only on managers it has this legalistic undertone,” Kalev said. “You are the decision makers, therefore you have to go through driving school.” The researchers also found that other tactics often aimed at helping with diversity, such as skill tests to help prevent bias in the hiring process or grievance systems where employees can log complaints, also led to declines in the number of women and minorities in the companies’ workforces over time. Managers don’t like being told whom they want to hire, so they often distribute tests selectively, while grievance systems can make managers feel threatened and retaliate, Kalev said. “We understand why they need to be there,” Kalev said of such tools. “But we think companies need to be way more reflective about what these (practices) do for their workforce.” The researchers used a statistical analysis to examine the effect that a range of diversity efforts had on each company’s makeup over time, examining both detailed surveys and data on the demographics of their workforce. By isolating factors such as broader industry diversity figures, organizational culture, or the presence of a union or an affirmative action plan, they believe their research shows that some diversity tools actually hurt or help the number of women and minorities in the ranks, rather than merely being linked with each other. Of course, diversity training programs can vary widely – from being forced to watch outdated 1980s VHS tapes about sexual harassment to attending sophisticated new “unconscious bias” training programs. And Kalev said their research has shown that training programs that focus on multiculturalism and the business case for diversity – rather than the legalistic reasons behind why it’s being offered – have a less negative effect. Still, she says, “even the most fascinating diversity training will be way more efficient if the crowd is sitting there voluntarily.”)

As far as talent in winning campaigns, one could argue that ability may be crumbling as the last two county board seats Chairman Cronin was banking to win were lost by a substantial margin in most people’s eyes.  We also suspect any potential future victories for himself may fall short based on the treasure trove of information now available at the people’s fingertips. The Tribune article claims the Cronin family is used to being compared to the Kennedy’s. Comparing Dan Cronin to Kennedy does have some validity. I think most would agree the common link is playing the taxpayer for the fool and capitalizing on the people’s laziness when it comes to holding them accountable. In order to hold public officials accountable, you must first know the truth.  You start by putting all the pieces of a puzzle together to better see the real picture. The challenge in putting together political puzzles is being able to actually find all the puzzle pieces as they have become masters at hiding them. We have spent over two years exposing malfeasance at the College of DuPage and have done our best to follow up on every tip we received. One of the interesting tips we received dealt with Dan Cronin, current DuPage County Board Chairman.  The tip was that COD hired him to do workers compensation claims on behalf of the college. We first covered this matter in this article, which confirmed he was in fact doing legal work on behalf of the college, but we still had some loose ends. I think we now have those last puzzle pieces to see the real picture and better understand how things operate in DuPage County. As earlier reported, we did seek a comment from Chairman Cronin regarding his representation of the college on workman’s compensation claims which can be viewed in this article. Please note he never truly answered our question but did confirm, his “law firm has represented the consortium since 2008.” The response, knowing what we know now, was nothing short of political duck and cover. Cronin’s response no longer passes the smell test.  The  COD Board of Trustees recently voted to release a large volume of closed session minutes.  Currently available are minutes between February of 2000 and August of 2009. That is a lot of reading to do and so far, it’s clear those running COD had no problem violating the Open Meetings Act and taking action in closed session on a litany of matters. I digress.  What does all this have to do with Dan Cronin?)
