CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS

— Closing Chicago’s inequality gap one business at a time – JESSICA DROSTE YAGAN  (DIERSEN: Yagan should stress the federal government.  Since the 1960s, the federal government’s top priority in Chicago has been a) to hire, to retain, and to promote young Democrat minorities and young Democrat females and b) to make way for them by wasting the careers of and by getting rid of its employees who are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.)
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20160930/OPINION/160929765
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Chicago is a city of extremes. It gets very hot and very cold. We have some of the most generous and kind people I know, yet violence is exploding across the city. The tech sector is booming, yet entire swaths of the city have seen little to no new opportunities. Dependent largely upon our skin color and ZIP code—which are inextricably related—Chicagoans are either gaining in educational attainment and benefiting from rising property values and increasing income or they are experiencing the opposite. Make no mistake, the status quo costs us all: Nations with greater inequality tend to have fewer periods of sustained economic growth. Is it a coincidence that Chicago ranks in the bottom third of the world’s largest economies for GDP growth and employment? I have a bias toward optimism and action. Yes, we have problems with racism and inequality. Yes, we have an epidemic of violence. But what can those of us in the business community do about it? One obvious answer lies in jobs.)

— GOP bill proposes freeze on U.S. naturalizations – Cristina Marcos
http://thehill.com/policy/national-security/298588-gop-bill-proposes-freeze-on-granting-immigrants-citizenship
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A House Republican introduced legislation to prevent the U.S. government from granting immigrants citizenship, responding to a report found that several hundred people slated for deportation were accidentally naturalized. The bill, offered by Rep. John Culberson (R-Texas) before Congress departed this week for its pre-election recess, would halt any new naturalizations until the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) finishes modernizing its fingerprint record database. A DHS inspector general report made public this month stated that at least 858 people ordered to be deported were mistakenly granted citizenship because their digital fingerprint records weren’t in DHS or FBI databases. Some paper-based fingerprint records weren’t consistently converted into digital form.)
