(FROM THE ARTICLE: A 44-year-old homeless man was convicted Thursday evening of raping a woman on the Illinois Prairie Path (in) Wheaton almost six years ago. Following a three-day trial and less than three hours of deliberation, a jury found Robert Davison guilty of multiple counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault and one count of unlawful restraint. Davison has been in custody at the DuPage County jail since his arrest in May of 2018. Wheaton police began investigating the attack just after midnight on May 18, 2018, when a woman was heard screaming for help near the PADS shelter in Wheaton. The woman had dirt on her face and cuts to her upper body. The woman told investigators she had been approached by Davison along the Prairie Path who “demanded sex from her.” When she refused, she said Davison dragged her into a wooded area by the hair and sexually assaulted her. Davison fled after the attack, but was located two days later, authorities said. Davison is scheduled back in court March 7 for a pre-sentencing hearing. He faces up to 90 years in prison.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: While no known arrivals of asylum seekers have occurred in Park Ridge, the city has put together a plan that would become effective if a bus load of migrants are suddenly dropped off in the city. Park Ridge leaders have decided not to enact an ordinance that would impose fines on bus companies and their drivers for allowing migrants to disembark in the city without prior notice. Instead, City Manager Joe Gilmore said, an “Emergency Management Plan” has been put together that directs that Park Ridge will “compassionately facilitate transportation (of migrants) to the city of Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications.” The plan lays out procedures the city and police department will follow should a drop off occur. In cases where migrants have been dropped off in Park Ridge without the city’s knowledge, “they should be sheltered at either the Dee Road or Uptown Metra station (whichever is closest).” From there, local police will contact the Metra Police Department and assist in getting people on the next inbound train to Chicago. In instances where a bus carrying migrants has not yet dropped off their passengers, the police “should request that the passengers remain on the bus for routing to the city of Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications.” According to Gilmore, city officials have studied the migrant issue for a lengthy period of time which for many suburbs has triggered ordinances that penalize bus companies and drivers that arrive in their communities unannounced. Most of those towns say they do not have the resources to shelter and feed asylum seekers. Local ordinances have been approved in neighboring Des Plaines and Rosemont. “The plan is high-level and fluid, and discussed frequently by city staff,” continued Gilmore. He explained that the city’s staff has communicated with other suburbs about their experiences. He added that a recent survey of the Northwest Municipal Conference revealed that a majority of its 46 members have not adopted ordinances that restrict unscheduled bus stops within their borders. “Park Ridge staff discussed this option, and engaged the city attorney, and staff concluded that this is not an effective option, at this time. We continue to monitor the situations and options.” Texas Gov. Greg Abbott about two years ago implemented the program of transporting asylum seekers, most of whom have entered the U.S. through Texas, to Northern locations that have declared themselves sanctuary cities. The city of Chicago considers itself a sanctuary city. Many people believe that Abbott created the program to dump migrants in cities as a way of showing the problems his state is wrestling with. In its Emergency Plan, Park Ridge police will provide “address, guidance, and/or escort to the Chicago location where migrants are given food and shelter. “The city of Park Ridge, like every Chicagoland municipality facing this crisis, does not have the resources or infrastructure necessary to accommodate individuals on a long-term basis,” said the city’s Emergency Plan.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Individuals should be treated as individuals and not on the basis of their membership in racial groups, especially by our government. Unfortunately, a new executive order encourages federal agencies to focus on racial group identity rather than the character and qualifications of employees and contractors. It will result in racial quotas in hiring, procuring, and even using artificial intelligence throughout the government. The executive order’s stated goal is advancing racial equity throughout the federal government. The word “equity” appears 21 times. The order brims with talk about “new action plans to advance equity,” “extending and strengthening equity-advancing requirements for agencies,” and requires agencies to convene “Equity Teams” charged with ensuring that their agencies are “delivering equitable outcomes.” While equity sounds similar to “equality,” the two concepts are quite different. A Biden campaign video narrated by Vice President Kamala Harris nicely sums up the difference, indicating that the administration uses “equality” to mean that each individual is given the same opportunities. “Equity,” on the other hand, seeks to achieve equal outcomes.)

For instance, in Alaska, where there are many more men than women, it is harder for a man to find a wife than a woman to find a husband. Something else that affects how hard it is for someone to find a spouse are preferences. If a person will only accept someone as a spouse who has characteristics that few people have, then it will hard for that person to find a spouse. In a recent paper published in Evolution and Human Behavior, Robert Brooks and coauthors used computer simulation models to mimic how different wealth characteristics of individuals influence the outcome of marriage markets. Their models simulated a population of one million men and one million women encountering each other and pairing off if they met a partner who met their specification for wealth. All the simulated men and women had a wealth characteristic that was distributed normally in the population, with a certain mean and standard deviation. That is, some men and women were rich, some were poor and most were in between, with the amount of inequality measured by the standard deviation of wealth. The women had the greater requirements for a spouse—they would only pair with a man they encountered of equal or greater wealth than themselves. The men had the least requirements for a spouse—they would pair with a woman they encountered who was willing to pair with them.)
