(FROM THE ARTICLE: A Bloomington native who used to lead Illinois Republicans said he knows from experience that the party chair is frequently the target of “everyone’s anger and frustrations.” Monday, the Illinois Republican Party’s State Central Committee replaced incumbent Chair Kathy Salvi with former DuPage County Auditor Bob Grogan. Salvi became chair less than two years ago, just in time for the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. Two years earlier, Salvi was the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate, losing to Democrat Tammy Duckworth. Salvi did a “nice job” raising money for the party, said Pat Brady, an attorney raised in Bloomington who served as state Republican chair from 2009 to 2013. During Brady’s term, social conservatives were angry with his stance favoring same-sex marriage. Brady is not sure why party leaders chose Grogan over Salvi this time around. “People were upset for whatever reason and they wanted a change,” said Brady. Now a Republican strategist with Mercury Public Affairs, Brady believes Illinois Republicans have a key decision to make. If they align themselves with the pro-Trump MAGA movement, Brady said “we’ll never be more than a downstate party.” Brady would like to see a more moderate brand, returning to the days when voters chose Republicans like Mark Kirk as U.S. senator and Jim Edgar as governor.
