My father often decried that he was passed over for promotions because he did not have a college degree. That motived me to take college preparatory courses in high school, get an ACT score of 24, graduate in the upper 20% of my class, earn a bachelor’s degree, earn three master’s degrees, earn six professional certifications, and earn a professional license. I did the aforesaid notwithstanding the fact that I was never viewed as being “college material.” Neither of my parents attended college, my father was only the first of my ancestors to earn a high school diploma, my mother never attended high school, I demonstrated no leadership potential, I could not run because I had bone disease, my eyesight could not be corrected to 20/20, and I had partial red/green color blindness. In retrospect, with benefit of hindsight, I would have focused more on studying and getting the best grades that I could and I would have majored in accounting at UIC and NIU, passed the CPA examination much sooner than I did, and became a licensed CPA much soon than I did.
