(FROM THE ARTICLE: Dave Diersen was among those fighting the tax assessor long before it became popular. He had a winning streak going, too, until this year, when Du Page County wouldn`t lower his assessment. Seven thousand Du Page County property owners challenged the value placed on their homes by township assessment procedures, and in the process tried to get their property tax bill lowered. It was a record-setting number, and because 1,000 have chosen to appeal losing on the county level, Du Page officials have asked for more time to get their cases together for the appeal hearing. When those hearings begin, Diersen will be ready to resume a battle that dates back to 1984, when his Wheaton home was built. ”We`re talking about a lot of money,” Diersen said. ”If it were just some little amount it probably wouldn`t be worth it.” His past battles haven`t been in vain. In 1987, for example, he convinced the county`s Board of (Tax) Review to reduce by $4,390, the assessment on which his tax bill was calculated. In Du Page, the assessment is supposed to equal a third of the estimated market value of a piece of property. Diersen`s argument has been this: There are some drainage and foundation problems with the house that would make it less valuable if he wanted to sell it. But he doesn`t want to sell, and pretty much likes his house the way it is. In any event, for seven years running, county review board members have agreed with his contention that the house was worth less than the assessment- which generally hovered around the $55,000 mark-claimed by the Milton Township Assessor`s office. But this year, Diersen, for the first time, was among those signing up to appeal their cases before a state panel, after the county review board refused to reduce his current assessment of $78,000.)
