Potential employers saw me as being draft bait. They did not believe that my application for a financial hardship draft deferment would be approved. I did not get offers for jobs that required a college degree until after my application was approved and because of my draft number, I was no longer subject to the draft. By then, my career was already behind schedule. To try to catch up, a) I earned an MBA from Loyola when I was 27 and a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul when I was 31, b) I passed the CPA examination when I was 30 and the Certified Internal Auditor examination when I was 32, and c) I became a licensed CPA when I was 32. But by then, it was too late. The federal government uses up-or-out to rid of its employees who are Republican, White, male, and/or non-veteran who do not make GS-13, currently $117,807/year, by age 25. I did not make GS-13 until I was 38.
