— Teen Takeover Raises Questions About Public Safety, Spaces for Young People. DD: When you were a high school and college student, what did you do after school, weekends, and summers? While I was a junior and a senior in high school, instead of studying, I washed dishes for 28 hours a week during the school years and 40 hours a week during the summer in between. During the summer between high school and college, I cleaned golf shoes, chipped slag, and pumped gasoline. While I took classes at UIC and NIU, instead of studying, I delivered mail for all the part-time hours that I could during the school years and full-time during the summers in between.

AXIOS CHICAGO
— Pick up an Illinois passport for America’s 250th. DD: While I worked for the Democrats who ran GAO’s Chicago office in the 1990s, they had a diversity event at which we were all encouraged/required to publicly disclose the country/countries that our ancestors immigrated from, when they immigrated, and their religion(s). Of course, I disclosed that all my ancestors immigrated from what is now Germany during the 1840s and 1850s and that they and I have always been Missouri Synod Lutheran. Very few in the office had ancestors who had immigrated from what is now Germany. Most had ancestors who had not been in America for a long time. Virtually none were Protestant. Because of Affirmative Action and other reporting requirements, we all already knew each others’ political affiliation, race, gender, age, veteran status, salary and bonuses, marital status, children, federal seniority, etc. We all knew that our GAO superiors’ top priorities were a) retaining and promoting their employees who were Democrat, minority, female, younger, and/or veteran and b) getting rid of their employees who were Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran. They all knew about, if not applauded, the many big adverse actions that my Democrat GAO superiors had taken against me.

— DD: Pentagon cites ‘meritocracy’ as reported officer promotion removals draw Democratic criticism. DD: Most if not virtually all of my coworkers who my Democrat superiors in the federal government promoted over me were minorities and/or female. All of them had less work experience than I had, had less education than I had, had fewer professional certifications than I had, and/or had no professional license like the one I had. During the last 8 years that I worked for the Democrats who ran GAO, all my Chicago office superiors and supervisors were women who were younger than me and did not share my conservativism, my Republicanism, my religion (Protestant), or my national origin (German). All of their parents were immigrants while my ancestors have been in America since 1844. When I was 49 in 1997, they took the lead in forcing me to retire. I should write about that.

AOL
— Spring Break. DD: When you were in college, did you take spring breaks? My Democrat Park Forest Post Office superiors were veterans and they were furious when I took vacation days for a spring break in 1969 and drove to Daytona Beach with three of my female NIU classmates in my 1969 Dodge Charger SE. In 1970, I repeated the aforesaid. My Democrat Firestone Store boss who was a veteran was furious that I went on a student package trip to the Bahamas while I was taking a graduate evening business course at UIC in the spring of 1971. My aforesaid superiors and boss were furious that I took the aforesaid vacations because I had avoided the Vietnam War draft with student deferments and a financial hardship deferment at a time when my peers were dying in Vietnam. They blamed Republicans like me for America losing the Vietnam War. Further, while I worked for IRS 1971-1980 and for GAO 1980-1997, many, most, and at times virtually all my of superiors and supervisors were Democrat veterans who also blamed Republicans for America losing the Vietnam War. They were also furious when took vacations every year starting in 1973. For them, the federal government existed to hire, to retain, and to promote Democrat veterans. In my defense, the four vacations to the Bahamas, Hawaii, Mexico, and Jamacia 1973-1976 were budget packages offered by the National Treasury Employees Union.

NDTV PROFIT
— What Makes A Professional Valuable? DD: What made you valuable? For me, it included my knowledge of IRS because GAO audits IRS. When I was 31 in 1980 and transferred from IRS to GAO, I had gained a strong knowledge of IRS by working for it almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the at the GS-12 Step 1-5 Levels, currently $100,059-$113,402/year. But because I was not a Democrat, minority, female, younger, or a veteran. But because I had complained about political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, and age discrimination. And because Democrats do not want Republicans to audit Democrats, my Democrat GAO superiors viciously discredited and wasted my knowledge of IRS. They did that a) by forcing me to take a $23,699/year (21%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer, a downgrade from GS-12 Step 5 to GS-9 Step 10, b) by delaying my promotions back to GS-12, c) by keeping me off audits of IRS until I was 37, and d) by not promoting me to GS-13 until I was 38. Further, while they let me work on audits of IRS for 3 years, none of those audits were of IRS’s Collection Division, the division that I knew most about. Further, to discredit me, they ignored, dismissed, and belittled what I learned earning an MBA when I was 27, passing the CPA examination on my first attempt when I was 30, earning a master’s degree in accounting when I was 31, and passing the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt and becoming a licensed CPA when I was 32. Further, I never would have gotten assigned to audits of IRS or promoted to GS-13 if the GAO manager who had arranged my transfer had not briefly gotten back into power. They forced him to retire when I was 39.

FINANCIAL CAREERS
— Success in investment banking is as much a function of opportunity, privilege, market timing, geography, and mobility as it is of talent and effort. DD: My critics/opponents do not attribute my career successes to my effort or to my ability. According to them, because I was a federal employee, I had plenty of time and money to do the following because federal employees work only 40 hours a week and because they are grossly overpaid: a) earn a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21, b) get promoted when I was 22, 23, 25, and 38, c) earn job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, d) earn professional certifications when I was 30, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and e) earn a job-related professional license when I was 32. CPA JOURNAL
— Reconciling Ambition with Reality. Addressing the Profession’s Diversity and Talent Pipeline Crisis. DD: The accounting profession wrote me off as being “TOO OLD” a) because I did not start taking graduate accounting courses until I was 27, b) because I did not take the CPA examination and pass it on my first attempt until I was 30, c) because I did not earn a master’s degree in accounting until I was 31, d) because I did not take and pass the Certified Internal Auditor examination and pass it on my first attempt and become a licensed CPA until I was 32, and e) more significantly, because I was not a minority or a female.
https://www.cpajournal.com/2026/03/30/reconciling-ambition-with-reality-2/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: For several years now, declining enrollments in universities and high turnover at firms have posed a serious threat to the accounting profession’s viability. The solution is not merely a numbers game, it requires a multifaceted approach to updating pedagogy, refreshing the profession’s image, and clearing firm-level cultural barriers. The leaky pipeline is not primarily due to a shallow pool of academic candidates, but rather to barriers that impede their successful entry, retention, and advancement within firms. The historical underrepresentation of minorities in the profession should be understood as intertwined with the pipeline problem, and solving the latter requires addressing the former. . .The accounting profession is currently grappling with a widespread and severe talent shortage, a crisis exacerbated by declining undergraduate enrollment in accounting programs and a significant decrease in candidates taking the CPA Exam. Data indicates that accounting graduates trended downward in the 2019/2020 academic year, with decreases of 2.8% at the bachelor’s level and 8.4% at the master’s level. Compounding this issue is a high turnover rate within the profession, with 82% of public accounting firms and 69% of private companies reporting significant retention challenges. The number of first-time CPA exam candidates also saw a substantial decline of 33% from 2016 to 2021. Various factors have contributed to this decline, including the perceived burden of the 150-hour education requirement, the perception of accounting as a “boring” field, the lower compensation compared to other majors like finance and technology, and the persistent lack of diversity within the profession.)

VEG OUT
— The more privileged you are, the less likely you’re able to truly comprehend your own privilege. DD: How privileged are you? According to my critics/opponents, the more of the following that you are, the more privileged you are: White, male, healthy, non-veteran, Protestant, German American, have ancestors who have been in America for a long time, and/or raised in a traditional family. I am all of the aforesaid. In my defense, no one viewed me as being college material, neither of my parents attended college, my father was only the first of my ancestors to earn a high school diploma, he never earned more than $50,000/year in today’s dollars, he died suddenly in 1969 when he was 47 and I was 21, my mother never attended high school, my ACT score was only 24, I only just barely made it into the upper 20% of my high school class, and I had to work my way through college. My critics/opponents stress that my parents raised me in Crete and that my father made enough money a) to send me to Missouri Synod Lutheran grade schools and b) to provide me with room and board while I took classed at UIC 1966-1968, weekends during my first semester at NIU in 1969, and the summer of 1969.
