(FROM THE ARTICLE: Democrat Margaret Croke, a state representative from Chicago, and Republican Bryan Drew, an attorney from Benton, are competing to succeed incumbent Comptroller Susana Mendoza, a Chicago Democrat who’s held the job since late 2016 but is forgoing a reelection bid to focus on a second campaign for mayor of the nation’s third-largest city. . .Drew has been a personal injury and civil litigation attorney in southern Illinois for more than 25 years. He’s also a small business owner. He’s served for eight years as an elected trustee of the Rend Lake Community College Board, including two has its chairman. And in 2024, he finished second in the Republican primary for a circuit court judgeship. Though limited in his experience in state government and finance, Drew said owning a cafe with his wife has exposed him to the impact of high taxes on small businesses. He said he would use the “bully pulpit” of the office to act as a watchdog for taxpayers. “If the comptroller’s office really is a watchdog for the taxpayers, then I think it is an essential office because it really is the one independent place that the taxpayers can go to find out where their money’s going,” Drew said. . .While acknowledging that decisions about state spending are the purview of the governor and the state legislature, Drew said the office can be a greater beacon of transparency for taxpayers. His first action, if elected, would be to improve the comptroller’s website, the current version of which he derided as “nearly impossible to figure out.” “Those websites are supposed to be for the taxpayers, not for public accountants to go on there and figure out where the money’s going,” Drew said. Drew said he’d particularly like to make state expenditures on non-government organizations easier to track. There’s no official, readily available tally on grant spending that goes to NGOs, though he pegged the number at “hundreds of millions of dollars,”, echoing a claim made by the GOP ticket for governor earlier this year. . .Drew sees the office differently. If he wins, he views himself as an ombudsman of sorts who can act as a check on government in a state where Democrats hold the governorship and supermajorities in the legislature. He acknowledged that Mendoza “was not just a rubber stamp for the governor” on at least one or two occasions. But he said he’s better suited to be a watchdog as an outsider. “I’ll probably be eating lunch by myself,” Drew said, noting that his career as an attorney has prepared him to handle a job where “you don’t make everyone happy.” . . . Drew said he would be happy to serve as a facilitator if lawmakers want to tackle another round of pension reform, though Pritzker and the General Assembly would have to lead the effort. . .Drew did not face competition in the Republican primary. He’s raised just under $80,000 from outside donors, about the same number of miles he’s logged traveling the state in his car since campaign started. Lacking the funds to sustain a paid advertising campaign in the nation’s sixth-largest state, Drew is leaning on the latter to get his message out. “I don’t have JB Pritzker maxing out campaign contributions like he has to my opponent, and special interests and other politically connected people handing a lot of money,” Drew said. “I don’t have that, and I think that’s a positive thing.”)
