http://www.nprillinois.org/post/idot-staff-assistants-sue-get-jobs-back#stream/0
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In 2016, Rauner issued a press release saying his administration had ended a “patronage hiring scandal” at the Illinois Department of Transportation. At issue were hundreds of people who’d gotten so-called staff assistant jobs under former governors Rod Blagojevich and Pat Quinn. These were political hires into jobs that should have been protected from that sort of thing. Attorney Don Craven says the eight workers suing Rauner eventually made their way into non-political jobs, but that didn’t save them. He says their firing was political. “This allegation is that these people were fired by IDOT because they’re Democrats and they refused to become affiliated with the Rauner administration,” Craven says. “That’s precisely what the first amendment says you can’t do — you can’t fire people because of their political affiliation.” The lawsuit is seeking to get the employees reinstated — with seniority, back pay and benefits. Asked for comment, the Rauner administration did not directly address the allegations in the lawsuit. Spokeswoman Patty Schuh says the administration has been “working hand-in-hand with the [Office of the Executive Inspector General’s] hiring monitoring unit and the court-appointed special master to clean up the corrupt political system created by previous governors.”)

— Maine West Principal Haugan paid in $358K to teachers pension fund, could collect $7.1 million in retirement (DIERSEN: In 1966-1997 dollars, I paid $70,932 into the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS). So far, in today’s dollars, CSRS has paid me $1,084,822 ($4,322 X 251 months). If I was still working for GAO, CSRS would not have paid me anything, and in today’s dollars, I would have paid $183,497 ($731 X 251 months) into the CSRS. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Defendant Rauner made comments that expressed his political animus to those individuals who supported Democrats or public-sector unions. Some of those comments were directed at some plaintiffs. […] The real reason for the termination of these Plaintiffs was that they were employed by the prior administration (under then Governor Patrick Quinn who was a member of the Democratic Party) or that they refused to become affiliated with the Rauner Administration. * Pretext… Despite the long-standing policy of IDOT to review and update job descriptions of employees, at no time after their reassignments did supervisory personnel, or personnel in the Bureau of Personnel verify the accuracy of Plaintiffs’ job descriptions or update the job descriptions to more accurately reflect the work being assigned to each Plaintiff. Defendants then used the job descriptions, which were intentionally allowed to become outdated as the pretense to terminate the employment of these Plaintiffs.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Hello. We’ve probably never met, but we think it’s safe to assume you’re the kind of person who wouldn’t walk into a convenience store and take a newspaper without paying for it. Asking for unlimited, free access to our website is the online equivalent of stealing a paper from the store. We can’t stay in business if we give our product away for free. We’ve had a paywall on our site for more than five years, but until recently, if you were coming to an article from social media, our content was free to view. Today, if a reader accesses more than 10 stories in a 30-day period, we will ask them to subscribe to continue reading our work, regardless of which source they use to find our journalism. Many people hit that limit early in the month. The change is long overdue and should have been made years ago. At the Standard-Times, we employ more than 25 people, 11 of them journalists who live in and love San Angelo. This doesn’t include the contract delivery personnel who deliver the print edition each day. These people work hard to bring important news to our audience. This award-winning staff keeps readers updated about events in town, attends countless public meetings and spends nights and weekends bringing you up-to-the-minute sports content. They request public records (and often fight for them) so you know what’s happening in your government. They report on breaking news so you know how you can keep yourself and your family safe. Salaries, newsprint, computers, pens, notebooks, smartphones and other reporting tools aren’t free. We spend thousands of dollars annually on criminal court documents alone. That’s on top of hundreds we spent on arrest documents, open records requests and other measures to hold government agencies accountable to the public.)

https://qz.com/1348882/us-household-wealth-for-the-bottom-50-is-half-of-what-it-was-in-2007/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: When it comes to wealth, the poorest American households are much worse off than they were in 2007. In fact, they are no better, in terms of wealth, than they were in 1971. . .In contrast, the average household in the bottom 50% had about half as much wealth in 2016 as they did in 2007. Poorer households typically invest in homes and other physical assets, and put little to no money in stocks. As a result, they have not participated in the post-recession wealth recovery.)
