POLITICO ILLINOIS
— RICKETTS & GOP RUMBLINGS; CABELLO SEEKS RECOUNT – Shia Kapos

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Todd Ricketts isn’t ruling out a run for governor, according to a source close to the Cubs co-owner. The revelation follows Tim Schneider’s announcement over the weekend that he is stepping down as state party chairman, prompting chatter that Ricketts, who is also chairman of the Republican National Committee’s finance committee, may be a possible — though unlikely — replacement. “Todd thinks Tim did a great job as state chair. As Todd is continuing as RNC Finance chairman, he will not be a candidate for state chair,” the source said, which leaves Ricketts’ options open for a statewide run. Schneider’s exit has prompted a flurry of interest — and name-dropping — about who might replace him, including: retiring Congressman John Shimkus, state Central Committeewomen Jan Weber or Barbara Viviano; Will County GOP Chairman George Pearson, a Black man with military, business and political experience; and Lake County Republican Party Chairman Mark Shaw, who also serves as state-party co-chairman. Schneider announced his exit during a virtual meeting of the Republican State Central Committee on Saturday. It caught some folks by surprise. But conservatives in the group pounced, wanting to name Shaw chairman. He wasn’t able to get enough votes and party leaders instead decided to make it an open search. Shaw is still expected to apply, though some in the Republican Party are concerned about his track record in Lake County. Democrats ousted GOP incumbents for state’s attorney and coroner last month, and they retained circuit court clerk and recorder seats. Democrats on the County Board also upped their majority from 12-9 to 15-6. The Tribune’s Rick Pearson describes Shaw as “a controversial figure” in GOP politics, for his shoot-from-the-hip tweets. Statewide, meanwhile, Republicans saw two big wins Nov. 3 with the defeat of Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s graduated income tax plan and stopping Supreme Court Justice Thomas Kilbride, a Democrat, from being retained. Now the party looks to capitalize on those victories and ramp up fundraising. It’s treating the hunt for a new chairman the way a company would conduct a CEO search. “We’ve pulled ourselves out of a dip and want to go into growth mode,” said one GOP source. The challenge the next chairman has isn’t any different than what Schneider has faced: managing the views of downstate Republicans vs. those in the northern part of the state. . .CABELLO seeks recount after loss: “State Rep. John Cabello is seeking a recount after the Republican’s narrow defeat to local attorney Dave Vella in the Nov. 3 election. Final election results in the race for the 68th District seat in the Illinois House of Representatives put Democratic challenger Vella 239 votes ahead after 53,301 were cast in Rockford and Winnebago County combined. Cabello on Friday filed paperwork with the Rockford Board of Elections asking for a recount in 10 Rockford precincts located inside six different wards,” by Rockford Register Star’s Jeff Kolkey.)

CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— A dogfight rocks the top of the Illinois GOP. And there’s more at stake than the chairmanship. – GREG HINZ
https://www.chicagobusiness.com/greg-hinz-politics/dogfight-rocks-top-illinois-gop
(FROM THE ARTICLE: According to party sources, Schneider, a former Cook County commissioner who was first made chairman by then-Gov. Bruce Rauner six years ago, has become tired of the unpaid job and particularly of clashes with central committee conservatives. He apparently wants to move on to private pursuits. At the weekend meeting, committee members went into closed executive session for more than three and a half hours, sources say, with conservative leader Mark Shaw, the Lake County chairman, coming within “one vote, maybe two” of winning the state post. Instead, a committee of two people from each side will try to work things out in coming weeks. How they will do that is not clear. Shaw didn’t return a phone call, and exactly what he would do differently than Schneider is not clear. But his style and that of his allies is reminiscent of how then-state Rep. Jeanne Ives almost toppled Rauner in the 2018 GOP primary with an in-your-face campaign during which she sharply underlined differences on abortion, gun rights, immigration and other matters. Revisiting that comes as the national GOP has been mostly mute over Trump’s unfounded claims that the election was “rigged” and must be overturned by Republican lawmakers. Notably among those castigating Trump for that and other stances is the only Republican congressman to represent part of the Chicago suburbs, Channahon’s Adam Kinzinger. Many in the party believe he’s trying to position himself to run for higher office—against Gov. J.B. Pritzker, or perhaps Sen. Tammy Duckworth, both up for re-election in 2022—and wants to build up some chits in what overall is a blue state. I suspect Kinzinger will keep a close eye on the chairmanship battle, the outcome of which could ease or complicate any effort by him to move up. The irony is that this battle—Shaw also ran for chairman two years ago—comes at a time when Republicans have some opportunity. Not only are Democrats divided over Madigan, but they just lost an Illinois Supreme Court seat and Pritzker faces only bad and worse fiscal choices in the wake of the defeat of his graduated income tax. Conservatives probably will argue the better path to success is not to rely on the business establishment, but to rev up their base. Perhaps. Meantime, we’ll see how nasty this fight gets. If it’s half as nasty as Trump’s exit plan, it will be a beaut.)

ILLINOIS REVIEW
— FIGHT OVER THE NEXT IL GOP CHAIRMAN REVS UP
https://www.illinoisreview.com/illinoisreview/2020/12/fight-over-who-the-next-il-gop-chairman-revs-up.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: So with all this to boast about, the Illinois Republican Party once again is at a crossroads: Do they follow the establishment elite, so-called “Pat Brady” path, or do they choose the path their conservative activist base has been begging for? According to the IL GOP’s press release, Schneider is stepping down after six years because he’s ready to do so. It appears he may be planning to stay around until a committee of four State Central Committee members he’s appointed find a replacement. Those committee members line up on two sides of the battle lines: Mike Bigger (18th CD) and long-time Jim Durkin staffer Judy Diekelman (2nd CD) on the “Pat Brady” party side and Char Foss-Eggeman (9th CD) and Fred Floreth (13th CD) more on the conservative base side. The former “Pat Brady” side of the equation line up with GOP powerhouses that endorsed and promoted John Kasich in the 2016 presidential bid and tend to promote “moderate” social views, Democrat tolerance and political career preservation. The conservative base has endured year after year of the Pat Brady mindset mocking them, telling them to get out of the party and take with them their conservative social views. Illinois Review will be working on getting responses from names we’ve heard are in the mix to succeed Schneider – including State Central Committeeman Mark Shaw, Mike Bigger on one side and names from the conservative side, including former State Rep. Jeanne Ives, former GOP IL Senate candidate Tom McCallagh, Cubs owner Todd Ricketts and businessman Gary Rabine.)

https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/books/2020/12/01/ijeoma-oluo-mediocre-book-white-male-america/6466188002/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Oluo isn’t insinuating all white men are mediocre: “What I’m saying is that white male mediocrity is a baseline, the dominant narrative, and that everything in our society is centered around preserving white male power regardless of while male skill or talent.” Slavery and backlash to the Great Migration; the takeover of indigenous lands and genocide of Native Americans; modern-day politics across the political spectrum; higher education’s racist roots and continuing struggle to deal with racism; and her own experiences with internet trolls, including the endangerment of her son, are just some of the examples the author of USA TODAY best-seller “So You Want to Talk About Race” (2018) invokes in the well-researched, yet highly personal, tome that shines a spotlight on modern-day racism and white supremacy.)

https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2020/12/04/jobs-near-me-chronic-unemployment-stigma-even-during-pandemic/3804962001/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Historically, the long-term unemployed have a much tougher time finding jobs than those sidelined for shorter spells. Skills erode over time, the theory goes, and extended unemployment may carry a stigma. That means a large group of Americans may have less income and spending power for years, even after the pandemic and its short-term economic effects are over.)
