Assistant Republican Leader Rep. C.D. Davidsmeyer, R-Murrayville, said he is concerned Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s administration would coordinate with Illinois State Police to begin confiscation of illegal weapons, including those now banned under the Protect Illinois Communities Act. “I believe it will happen, if it has not happened already,” he said. Davidsmeyer said he also is worried the government will withhold grants from local law enforcement agencies that did not enforce the assault weapons ban. Dozens of sheriffs have stepped forward to say they will not enforce the ban, a move Pritzker has said would put their jobs at risk. “Ultimately, my concern is that … because so many sheriffs have said they will not enforce this law,” Davidsmeyer said, “that the state will try to withhold all grants from local law enforcement because they’re not doing what the powers on high tell them they have to do.” A representative for the governor’s office said the claims are “all completely false.” The concerns come after few people registered guns classified as “assault weapons” with state police by the ban’s registration deadline. About 1.2% of all Firearm Owner Identification Card holders registered their guns between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31; an additional 5,867 were in the process Jan. 1-16 of completing an affidavit, according to state police. Davidsmeyer said he believes Pritzker will “say whatever politically he needs to say” to enact stronger measures against some firearms. Politicians are “afraid of doing … partial measures” because they want to be sponsored by pro-gun control groups, he said. “Unfortunately, the reality is (Pritzker) wants those guns,” Davidsmeyer said. “That’s it. I’m not saying this to scare anybody.
