https://abc7chicago.com/illinois-assault-weapon-ban-2023-gun-laws-new-dupage-county-sheriff/12728795/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Mendrick issued a statement Monday afternoon saying in part, “There is absolutely nothing that we are doing or not doing that would make a mass shooting more accessible in DuPage County. In fact, I have asked on multiple occasions to increase penalties on all existing gun crimes…” “In his estimation they’re asking him to go after legal gun owners and that’s where he has a problem with the law,” said former Republican state representative Jeanne Ives. Enforcement of the assault weapons ban is likely to get a lot of discussion during Tuesday morning’s DuPage County board meeting. Leaders on both sides are encouraging supporters to show up. Monday afternoon the state of Illinois filed an appeal to a judge’s ruling that put the assault weapons ban on hold for some parties. That temporary restraining order that came down Friday night and only applies to four federal firearm license dealers and 862 Illinois citizens who are signed plaintiffs in a downstate lawsuit against the law.)

https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/assault-weapons-ban-sparks-war-of-words-between-dupage-county-sheriff-and-lawmakers/3052479/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In a statement released Monday afternoon, Mendrick struck back at the lawmakers saying, “When elected officials are blatantly untruthful, maybe they are the ones who should consider resignation.” “There is absolutely nothing that we are doing or not doing that would make a mass shooting more accessible in DuPage County,” he added. A downstate Illinois judge on Friday granted a temporary restraining order in a case challenging the legality of the assault weapons ban, effectively halting enforcement of the law for the more than 800 plaintiffs. All but a handful of Illinois’ county sheriffs have said they won’t enforce the ban. Many of them did so by posting letters almost identical to Mendrick’s.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: In a lengthy statement released on Monday, Mendrick again criticized the new law as “poorly written” and for having “no clear direction on who will be enforcing new gun laws.” He said he was contacted by Casten on Jan. 16 about enforcing the law. “There is absolutely nothing that we are doing or not doing that would make a mass shooting more accessible in DuPage County,” Mendrick said in the statement. “In fact, I have asked on multiple occasions to increase penalties on all existing gun crimes, but it does not appear that they want to have that conversation. https://wgntv.com/news/dupage-county/dupage-co-elected-officials-discuss-local-sheriffs-refusal-to-enforce-assault-weapons-ban/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: On January 13, Mendrick announced that due to his personal beliefs on the act, he would not enforce the law in DuPage County. He is one of many county sheriffs across Illinois to voice such a statement. Enforcement of the law is currently suspended due to a judge’s ruling on Friday in Effingham after multiple lawsuits were filed to overturn the ban. Mendrick released a statement in response to the Monday meeting, where he states he was ‘berated’ and ‘admonished’ but is pleased to hear the suspension of the law. He also questions officials’ goals in combating gun violence. Mendrick claims that he requested increasing penalties for gun crimes and stresses gun laws tied to criminal activity, making domestic violence a top priority for him. “This is a big win for our law-abiding citizens and for law enforcement,” Mendrick said. The DuPage County Board is meeting Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. and is inviting constituents to submit questions and statements they have in regard to the matter.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: In an interview with the Chicago Tribune last week, Mendrick said he planned on staying out of the statewide outcry among other sheriffs about the new law but said the concerns he heard from his own deputies and regular citizens were too much to ignore. “The first couple of days, I was actually trying to call people back personally. But everyone would keep me on the phone for 30, 40 minutes apiece. Every citizen I talked to wanted to vent on all of this stuff,” said Mendrick. “The way the law was released scared society. I know it wasn’t the intent. But it did. It scared everybody who owns guns.” “Gun owners, lawful gun owners, this makes them feel that their rights are being infringed upon, that this is just the beginning,” said Mendrick. “How much further will it go after this?” He said he tries to “comply with everything I can” but believes the new law, as written, is incomplete. While the ban says that current owners of high-capacity magazines are required to register them with the Illinois State Police by April and high-powered weapons by Jan. 1, Mendrick is concerned over whether he’ll have the police resources to enforce the law. “If you’re expecting us to be the arm of this, how? Tell me where I get the people,” he said. . .In a follow-up statement after the news conference, Mendrick said the law is poorly written and has no clear direction as to who will be enforcing it. He said he was contacted by Casten on Jan. 16 about enforcing the law. “There is absolutely nothing that we are doing or not doing that would make a mass shooting more accessible in DuPage County,” Mendrick said in the statement. “In fact, I have asked on multiple occasions to increase penalties on all existing gun crimes, but it does not appear that they want to have that conversation. https://www.dailyherald.com/news/20230123/were-not-going-to-let-this-die-push-for-dupage-sheriff-to-retract-weapons-ban-statement-grows
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Earlier this month, Mendrick issued a statement that said he believed the state’s new ban on high-powered guns and high-capacity magazines was unconstitutional. “Therefore, as the custodian of the jail and chief law enforcement official for DuPage County, that neither myself nor my office will be checking to ensure that lawful gun owners register their weapons with the state, nor will we be arresting or housing law-abiding individuals that have been arrested solely with noncompliance of this Act,” Mendrick’s statement reads. . .”There is absolutely nothing that we are doing or not doing that would make a mass shooting more accessible in DuPage County,” Mendrick said in a written statement. “In fact, I have asked on multiple occasions to increase penalties on all existing gun crimes, but it does not appear that they want to have that conversation. “They seem more concerned with lawful gun owners than people illegally possessing guns,” he said. Mendrick, who had previously suggested he believed compliance checks would be tied to the law, also took note that lawmakers on Monday said they would not be asking officers to go door to door to ensure weapons were legally registered. “That is a big win for our law-abiding citizens and for law enforcement,” his statement read. . .In his statement Monday, Mendrick, a Republican, said it was “disheartening” to hear Stava-Murray suggest he would not enforce the law when he has said he would enforce the weapons ban when it involves other illegal activity. “When elected officials are blatantly untruthful, maybe they are the ones who should consider resignation,” Mendrick said. . .During a nearly hourlong interview over the weekend on AM-560’s “Black and Right” radio program, Mendrick was critical of the weapons ban, claiming sheriffs were not consulted in drafting the new law. Mendrick also questioned what happens after Jan. 1, 2024, the deadline for gun owners to register weapons. Though state lawmakers Monday said they would not seek door-to-door compliance checks, Mendrick said a Jan. 16 conversation with Casten suggested otherwise. The sheriff said Casten suggested that if police officers would go to the door of a home filled with Molotov cocktails, then Mendrick “should be fine going to the doors of people’s homes for the new gun laws.” “That reinforced my belief that we were going to be saddled with a manpower challenge that would be insurmountable, to say the least,” Mendrick said Monday. . .”If we go to doors to check for lawful gun owners, we won’t be available to answer 911 calls anymore,” Mendrick said during the radio program, adding that he would need to send three officers to a home to check for weapons. He also noted he is down 30 deputies and has gone from having 18 deputies on each shift to 11.)

— COMMENT: Democrats say “As Tax Season Starts, a Beleaguered I.R.S. Looks to Bolster Customer Service.” (COMMENT: During 1974, as a 25-year-old GS-11 (currently $76,990/year) Revenue Officer, I supervised all of the IRS employees, which included a rotating staff of about 90 Revenue Agent trainees, in IRS’s new downtown Chicago office who answered taxpayer questions using IRS’s new CentiPhone system. Because of my performance, IRS promoted me to GS-12 (currently $92,279/year). But then, my Democrat IRS superiors disallowed my travel vouchers (SEE: https://www.gao.gov/products/b-180010.11 ) and got rid of the IRS manager who had a) promoted me to GS-9 (currently $63,633) in 1972, b) promoted me to GS-11 in 1973, c) got me the CentiPhone Manager assignment, and d) promoted me to GS-12 in 1974.)
