SPRINGFIELD STATE JOURNAL REGISTER
— Does the objection to Trump on the Illinois primary ballot have a chance? What we know. – Patrick M. Keck
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Supporters of the former president like U.S. Rep. Mary Miller, R-Oakland, said the objection was politically-motivated with Trump as the overwhelmingly leading GOP candidate. She also is a Trump GOP convention delegate. “They know Trump will defeat Biden in a free & fair election,” Miller posted on X, formerly Twitter. “Democrats are embracing banana republic tactics by trying to jail their political opponents and throw them off the ballot.” . . . Matt Dietrich, ISBOE spokesperson, said the state election authority’s process will begin on Jan. 17 with the selection of a hearing officer who will meet with both parties to discuss their case. That officer will then report their findings with ISBOE’s general counsel, later providing a recommendation to its bipartisan, eight-member electoral board on Jan. 30. A majority vote is required for the objection to move forward. In the case of a tie, the objection is dropped. Objectors and the candidate, however, can seek judicial review, meaning any legal challenges likely would be ongoing when early voting starts on Feb. 8. The Illinois Supreme Court, holding a 5-2 Democratic majority, could be a favorable venue for the objectors.)

— Income tax deductions you should not miss – ELLIOT RAPHAELSON (COMMENT: What tax deductions have you taken? In 1978, the Democrats who ran IRS disallowed the graduate a) business courses that I had taken at Loyola 1972-1976 and b) accounting courses that I had taken at DePaul since 1976. I was 29, I had worked for IRS for almost 7 years, and my salary was $106,785/year (GS-12 Step 4) in today’s dollars. They would not have disallowed those courses I had not been a union member or if I had been a Democrat, minority, female, and/or veteran. They disallowed those courses to punish me for my complaining about their use of “up-or-out” to get rid of me, that is, their use of political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, and age discrimination to get rid of me. They had made it extremely clear that they would never promote me to GS-13 because I was too old. They ignored/dismissed/belittled the aforesaid course work and that I was on track to pass the CPA examination which I did in 1979. They outrageously/disgustingly/unethically argued that the courses were not job-related, that they did not help me carry out my job duties, that they qualified me for a new trade or business, and that I took them to get a job in the private sector. They ignored/dismissed/belittled the requirements of my position descriptions and the fact that I stated in my Loyola and DePaul applications that I wanted to take the courses because the employee manual that IRS gave me in 1971 encouraged me to take graduate business, accounting, and law courses. They helped Money Magazine make my deducting the courses look improper in its 4-page February 1978 article on me.)

(FROM THE OBITUARY: Gary was a graduate of Northern Illinois University with a degree in accounting. He was a highly driven, business- minded CPA who quickly worked his way up at KPMG, becoming a partner at just age 32. He held many esteemed positions, including partner-in-charge of the Chicago Audit Practice and leader of the Midwest-area technology practice. An accountant by trade, Gary dedicated his talents not only to his work but also to the community. He joined many business boards. He was a director of Marine Bank and “interim” President of Sunny Ridge Family Center for ten years, guiding them to success.)
