Sunday’s public apology by ex-Bergen County Executive Dennis McNerney, who
admitted using dozens of pseudonyms to write false comments online about a
political rival, is a warning to anyone who thinks the anonymity of the
internet gives them a license to lie about public figures, legal experts say.
McNerney, a Democrat, agreed to apologize to GOP consultant Alan Marcus to settle
a five-year defamation case Marcus waged over online comments McNerney posted
under fake names in 2014. The comments alleged that Marcus committed fraud,
blackmail and corruption and was about to be indicted. Marcus’ attorney has
deemed the settlement agreement, which includes an undisclosed financial sum
and McNerney’s public apology, the result of “landmark” litigation. Legal
experts won’t go as far as to call the settlement a landmark, but the
