— With former Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner out of state’s political scene, Illinois GOP turns to grassroots fundraising – RICK PEARSON (DIERSEN: What motivates you to donate money to Republican political organizations? (FROM THE ARTICLE: In its last filing with the State Board of Elections, the state GOP reported having $88,412 in cash on hand as of June 30. Rauner’s last donation to the state party, totaling $100,000, came two days after Democrat J.B. Pritzker defeated him for governor, 55% to 39%. Pritzker’s victory has turned the tables on Republicans. The Democrat is the country’s wealthiest politician, worth $3.4 billion and ranking 250th on the Forbes 400 list of wealthy Americans. President Donald Trump comes in at 275th on the list with a net worth of $3.1 billion. Pritzker gave his campaign $172 million and his campaign fund has given the state Democratic Party nearly $3.2 million, state campaign finance records show.)

https://chicago.suntimes.com/2019/7/8/20686445/marijuana-law-weed-legalization-smoke-free-illinois-act-ban-recreational-marijuana-dispensaries
(FROM THE LETTER: Illinois’ new marijuana law includes an exemption to the Smoke-Free Illinois Act ban on indoor smoking, and lets cities decide whether to allow on-site marijuana use at bars, restaurants, and cannabis smoking lounges, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. Rep. Kelly Cassidy and her colleagues decided that social consumption of marijuana would be allowed, but not licensed by the state, leaving that up to local officials, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Public health and safety are concerns with on-site consumption. Legislators thought video gambling would be limited only to bars, restaurants and veteran organizations. However, video gambling machines are everywhere, except in the 125 municipalities and counties where they are banned. We could see a similar situation with marijuana unless local officials pass ordinances to ban recreational marijuana dispensaries, processing, transporting, cultivation facilities and on-site consumption of marijuana in municipalities and counties. Living near marijuana dispensaries makes youth more likely to use marijuana, according to a study by the Rand Corp. Youth who use marijuana are more likely to experience negative consequences, such as increased risk of mental and physical health problems, according to the researchers. Contact your mayor, city council and county board to ask for a ban on recreational marijuana businesses and on-site consumption. Act now to protect your family and community before it is too late.)

GOPUSA
— Ilhan Omar goes after the stoner vote (DIERSEN: The Republican Party platform opposes the sale of pot. None of the Republicans who represent DuPage County in Springfield voted for the sale of pot. In Illinois, you declare your political party affiliation with the type ballot that you cast in primary elections. If you promote the sale pot, you should cast a Libertarian Party ballot. Which politicians are going after the stoner vote in your neighborhood, in your precinct, in your municipality, in your township/ward, and in your county? I should write an article about those “Republican” politicians who are going after the stoner vote in my neighborhood, in my precinct, in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, and in DuPage County. They fail/refuse to call for a ban on the sale of pot in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, and in DuPage County.)
http://www.gopusa.com/?p=72290
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Ilhan Omar renewed her call for legalizing marijuana nationwide this week, framing federal action on the issue as a matter of economic equality. In an interview with BET, the freshman Minnesota Democrat said lawmakers should “not allow for the states to pick and choose” whether to legalize the substance. “What happens

[without full legalization]

is you will have a state where someone is publicly and professionally able to profit and the next state, someone could be sent to life for it,” Omar said. “We want to make sure that there is equality in our laws. I don’t think it is just for that kind of economy to exist within this policy.” The push to legalize marijuana has gained traction in recent years. Eleven states have adopted laws allowing marijuana for recreational purposes. Dozens more, including Minnesota, approve medicinal use in some cases. But possessing or selling the substance remains a federal offense. Omar is a cosponsor of legislation that would remove the drug from the federal list of controlled substances and expunge federal convictions for marijuana possession or use. The measure is backed by a number of Democratic presidential candidates, including Sens. Cory Booker, Kamala Harris, Kirsten Gillibrand, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. The proposal has so far failed to get a hearing in either chamber or attract support from Senate Republicans, whose votes would be needed to pass. A number of members of Minnesota’s congressional delegation, including fellow freshman Democrats Angie Craig and Dean Phillips, have previously expressed support for allowing states to legalize the substance. But Omar is the state’s only member pushing for lifting the prohibition on the federal level. Minnesota U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, a presidential candidate, backs legalization but says “states should have the right to determine the best approach to marijuana within their borders.” The debate over legalization, including the economic impact of current policies, will return to the spotlight in Washington on Wednesday, when a congressional subcommittee holds a hearing on “racial justice and the need for reform” of marijuana laws.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Sunday’s public apology by ex-Bergen County Executive Dennis McNerney, who admitted using dozens of pseudonyms to write false comments online about a political rival, is a warning to anyone who thinks the anonymity of the internet gives them a license to lie about public figures, legal experts say. McNerney, a Democrat, agreed to apologize to GOP consultant Alan Marcus to settle a five-year defamation case Marcus waged over online comments McNerney posted under fake names in 2014. The comments alleged that Marcus committed fraud, blackmail and corruption and was about to be indicted. Marcus’ attorney has deemed the settlement agreement, which includes an undisclosed financial sum and McNerney’s public apology, the result of “landmark” litigation. Legal experts won’t go as far as to call the settlement a landmark, but the resolution of the case does contain a lesson for trolls who think online anonymity is an impenetrable shield, according to lawyers who talked to NorthJersey.com and the USA TODAY NETWORK New Jersey.)
