— How I Lost My Career and Started Delivering Mail. No one expects to have to start over from the bottom rung at age 50. But when the pandemic struck, marketing professional Stephen Starring Grant rose to the challenge. (COMMENT: I worked for the Park Forest Post Office 1966-1969, part-time while I took classes at UIC 1966-1968 and at NIU in 1969 and full-time during the summers of 1967, 1968, and 1969. My Democrat superiors forced me to resign in September of 1969 falsely arguing that I would not be available to work enough part-time hours. I was available every Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, holiday, and every day that NIU was not in session. They would not have forced me to resign if I had been a Democrat, minority, female, or veteran.)
https://www.wsj.com/lifestyle/careers/how-i-lost-my-career-and-started-delivering-mail-c238d934
(FROM THE ARTICLE: I was being laid off. My skill set was not particularly practical; I wasn’t a cardiologist or a plumber. My work in the two decades before the pandemic had a bunch of names—Brand Strategist, Marketing Consultant, Consumer Psychologist—but getting a new marketing job was going to be a near impossibility for the foreseeable future. It was certainly never going to happen before my health insurance ran out in a couple of weeks. Which was a problem, because a couple of months earlier I had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. My cancer was as benign as cancer gets, but what had seemed manageable, treatable, now loomed as an existential issue. Not to mention that I was a husband and a father of two teenage girls, who counted on me to keep them in the upper middle class. To get unemployment, I had to be actively searching for a new job. I would go on the Virginia Employment Commission website, find anything I was even remotely qualified for and apply. I lived in Blacksburg, the small town in far western Virginia where I’d grown up, but the jobs I’d find myself applying to were almost all in Northern Virginia. Locally, there was nothing. Except for a job as a part-time letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service. It paid $18.50 an hour, and it came with healthcare on day one. The pay cut was eye-watering: I hadn’t worked a job at that wage level since my early 20s. But I would definitely enjoy working outdoors for a change—and independently. Some people give up after things happen to them. Others get back up, over and over again. We think of this as a strength, as grit, determination, willpower. This kind of toughness has always struck me as essential to the Appalachian character. If you get laid off or shot, or people yell at you and call you an idiot or tell you that you’ll never amount to a goddamned thing, don’t think about it. Just get back up and try again. After two weeks of training, I was assigned to fill in for the regular mailman on Rural Route 3, a monster 60 miles in length, with 724 deliveries. The whole middle section of the route, a long slide downhill to the river, was so remote that it received no cellphone service. I might as well have been delivering the mail in 1920 and not 2020. . .Did I believe I was a mailman? I was lousy at my job, still very stuck on how slow I was. I saw myself as a faker being chased by the clock. But I got better over the months to come. There were days when the mail was light and the weather good and delivering the mail was the best of all possible jobs, the work a joy, the solitude a gift. I knew I was never going to be great at it, in the way that I will never be an NFL quarterback or play electric guitar like Eddie Van Halen. I delivered the mail for a year before I found a new job in marketing, and the best grade I ever deserved was a solid B-/C+. Even with that I think my greatest accomplishment was not quitting. And yet, somewhere in those early months, change did come. Letter by letter I was learning. I got tougher. I became capable of delivering everything that I loaded into my truck in the morning. The economics of delivering the mail were unsentimental—paying for my mortgage and groceries cost more than I was bringing in. But out there on Route 3 the job became more than just a financial delaying tactic. I was inhabiting something real, feeling what it was like to be there for people. I had become a mailman.)
