(FROM THE ARTICLE: 1. Eliminate electronic distractions Distractions can increase your workload and stress levels. The constant ding of e-mail and text notifications and Internet temptations can easily disrupt your focus and concentration. According to a study by the University of California, Irvine, it can take up to 23 minutes before you’re able to refocus on the work you were doing before you were interrupted. To start, set up temporary barriers to help keep you focused. Some web tools that can help are Freedom, a website blocker for your computer and phone, and Inbox Pause, which stops new e-mails from coming into your inbox for a time. While the prospect of quieting electronic noise like this may seem daunting at first, it can help maximize your work day and minimize the amount of overtime needed.)

https://www.theherald-news.com/2018/10/12/foster-to-rauner-lessen-tax-burden-on-illinois-residents/a8x033t/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The specific provision in the bill that Foster and the nine other representatives were concerned about was the cap on deducting state and local taxes, known as the SALT deduction, to $10,000 a year. “The newest tax scam hurts families in Illinois by making the cap on state and local tax deductions for individuals permanent, and I call on Governor Rauner to address the damage the new tax law will have on Illinois taxpayers,” Foster said in a statement. “I opposed both pieces of legislation because they impose a significant burden on hardworking Illinoisans.” The letter states the representatives are “disappointed” Rauner didn’t oppose the SALT deduction provision in the bill and said other states have already taken steps to offer solutions.)

POLITICO ILLINOIS
— Conservative mega-donor Richard Uihlein and Gov. Bruce Rauner parted ways bitterly after Rauner signed the HB40 abortion legislation supported by pro-choice advocates. Uihlein went on to bankroll Republican state Rep. Jeanne Ives’ primary campaign to the tune of $2.5 million. When she lost, Uihlein seemed to step back from political races. He gave only $1.5 million to various candidates across the state during Q2. That changed in Q3. He ramped up his support, giving $3.5 million to Dan Proft’s conservative Liberty Principles PAC, which is backing numerous GOP candidates in statehouse races. Uihlein also gave $150,000 to Bill Brady’s state Senate campaign in the 44th District (he’s running unopposed); and $300,000 to Barrett Davie, who’s running against Dem incumbent Julie Morrison for the 29th state Senate District seat. – Shia Kapos

(FROM THE ARTICLE: It’s not easy to voice my opinion about Harvard’s admissions policies on campus. For all the talk about “diversity,” many fellow students won’t tolerate my views. I often get comments such as, “How can you be against affirmative action? That’s racist,” and “You should be grateful to Harvard. Why are you critical of them?” . . . On campus, I’m often labeled as ignorant and bigoted for opposing affirmative action. I’m one of the few students who openly criticize Harvard. Even among friends and fellow Asian-American students, this is a polarizing issue that has fallen on partisan lines. Yet real alternatives to race-based affirmative action exist. Race-blind admissions processes that prioritize socioeconomic status, taking into account how applicants have dealt with life’s challenges, would do a far better job of creating genuine diversity. Asian-Americans know they are being unfairly discriminated against under a defense of diversity. Let’s hope the courts recognize it too.)
