— When you were in high school, were you viewed as being “college material?” I was not. Neither of my parents attended college. My father was only the first of my ancestors to earn a high school diploma. My mother never attended high school. I could not run because I had a bone disease. My eyesight could not be corrected to 20/20. I had partial red/green color blindness. During my junior and senior years, I washed part-time and full-time during the summer in between. Nevertheless, I took college preparatory courses, got an ACT score of 24, graduated in the upper 20% of my class, and got accepted by UIC.
