Rabine was an early backer of Turning Point USA, which Kirk cofounded in 2012 to bring conservative ideas to college campuses. “I have watched him over the past 13 years become the greatest leader behind positive change in our college universities and our country,” said Rabine, who ran for governor in 2022. “Terrible tragedy,” said former Gov. Bruce Rauner, another early donor to Turning Point noting Kirk was part of his 2014 rise to Springfield. Rauner described the young activist as “bright, talented and charismatic.” What we know: Kirk, 31, was killed by a single gunshot during a speaking event at Utah Valley University in the conservative town of Orem, about 40 miles south of Salt Lake City. No one is yet in custody, according to The Associated Press. He leaves behind a wife and two young children. Congressman Darin LaHood, a Republican, called the murder “a heinous act of political violence that has become too common in our country. Charlie did not deserve to die because of his ideological views.” Though they rarely saw eye to eye, Gov. JB Pritzker condemned the shooting and drew a wider lesson. “We’ve seen other political violence occur in other states, and it’s got to stop. There are people who are fomenting it in this country,” Pritzker told reporters upon first hearing of the shooting. He pointed to Trump’s pardons of Jan. 6 protesters as having “tripped a new era of political violence.” Trump himself broke the news, posting on Truth Social: “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!” Later, Trump signaled his anger, blaming the media and “radical left” in a video address from the Oval Office. Kirk got to know Trump while handling social media during his 2016 presidential. From there, he built a national profile as a sharp-tongued defender of the president and his MAGA movement — and a fixture on the conservative speaking circuit. But it was Illinois where Kirk got his political start. He worked on Rauner’s 2014 campaign for governor.
