As Money Magazine had intended, IRS disallowed the graduate evening a) business courses that I had taken at Loyola 1972-1976 and deducted and b) accounting courses that I had taken at DePaul 1976-1978 and deducted. I won the business courses in Tax Court, but I lost the accounting courses because the judge established a new rule that accounting courses are not deductible until you are qualified to take the CPA examination. Notwithstanding the article, a) my wife and I still got married in April of 1978 and we are still married, b) we bought a home in Wheaton in April of 1978, c) I passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979, d) I transferred from IRS to GAO in 1980, e) I earned a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980, f) I passed the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981, g) I became a licensed CPA in 1981, h) we had a home built in Wheaton in 1984, i) GAO promoted me to GS-13 (currently $109,732/year) in 1986, j) I earned a master’s degree in financial markets and trading from IIT in 1997, and k) I survived as a GAO employee until September 30, 1997. The article brought to light lots of information that my critics/opponents have used against me and continue to use against me including a) that I was baptized, raised, and confirmed as a Missouri Synod Lutheran, b) that I am 100% German national origin, c) that I avoided the Vietnam War draft with student draft deferments 1966-1970 and a financial hardship draft deferment 1970-1971, d) that I have always been a conservative Republican, e) that I had been a National Treasury Employees Union member since 1971, f) that I had been a union member 1966-1969 while I worked for the Park Forest Post Office, g) that I had lived in Crete 1948-1972, and h) that I opposed political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, and age discrimination. But the biggest and longest lasting damage done by the article was its success in demonizing me, denigrating me, and condemning me as having been promoted far too fast and therefore making me grossly overpaid. That directly led to GAO’s success in a) forcing me suffer a $21,863/year pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980, b) delaying my promotions, c) never promoting me beyond GS-13, d) always ranking me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, and e) forcing me to take its early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old.)
