— Dissident artist Ai Weiwei and U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren bond over refugee rights – Kim Janssen (DIERSEN: Of course, because of this, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes would hint/imply/argue/shout at Hultgren that I am a White supremacist, Nazi, KKK member, hater, racist, sexist, bigot, and even worse things. They would stress to Hultgren that unlike them, I am not a member of a church, I do not attend church services, and I do not give money to a church. Anti-Trumps shout at refugees that Republicans are White supremacists, Nazis, KKK members, haters, racists, sexists, bigots, and even worse things.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chicagoinc/ct-hultgren-weiwei-0927-chicago-inc-20170927-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Hultgren’s outspoken support of refugee rights has placed him in potential conflict with President Donald Trump, whose bans on refugees from a series of majority Muslim countries have been challenged in court. But the congressman, who votes in line with Trump’s favored position more than 90 percent of the time, was careful not to directly criticize White House policy this week. “Immigration is a foundational part of who we are … to be a place of refuge,” he said. “I understand that there are bad actors and terrorists out there … but I don’t want to shut off opportunity for people who really need refuge. I don’t think those are mutually exclusive.”)

DAILY HERALD
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: Anti-Trumps say “Immigrant rights event canceled after threats to Arlington Heights library.”
http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20170928/lester-immigrant-rights-event-canceled-after-threats-to-arlington-heights-library
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Arlington Heights Memorial Library canceled an immigrants rights workshop this week out of “concerns for safety” after the library’s voice mail and board president Deb Smart’s home phone were flooded with calls from people objecting to the meeting. “It was an unsettling process,” Smart says. “People called the switchboard, saying they’d call (federal immigration officials) and have a raid done.” She says she was called names and threatened, and ultimately involved local police. The free workshop was sponsored by the Community Activism Law Alliance and was advertised as informing immigrants on what to do and say when in contact with immigration and police officers and how to prepare “emergency kits” if they’re at risk for detention. Smart said a similar workshop might be held in the future at a different location. The library’s official statement, posted on its website, says “the decision to cancel the workshop was based on concerns for the safety and welfare of workshop attendees, library staff and library users.”)
— Undergarments for packing heat – Kerry Lester
http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20170928/lester-immigrant-rights-event-canceled-after-threats-to-arlington-heights-library
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Marilyn Smolenski of Park Ridge, who is unopposed in the Republican primary in the 55th Illinois House District, owns Nickel and Lace, a business specializing in “concealed carry holster undergarments,” which are advertised as both discreet and comfortable. She founded the business after finding holsters “were all really geared toward men,” she told Fox Business Network last year. Democratic state Rep. Marty Moylan of Des Plaines is seeking re-election in the 55th District next November.)
— Congrats to Connelly – Kerry Lester

(FROM THE ARTICLE: St. Joseph High School in Westchester is honoring Naperville Republican state Sen. Michael Connelly with its St. Joseph the Worker Award. School officials say the award is given to those who’ve succeeded in business, the arts, science or community service and is traced back to the motto of the school, Vincit Qui Laborat, translated as “he conquers, who labors.” Connelly, a 1982 graduate, was recently named assistant Republican leader.)

Veronica Vera, a Chicago native, worked at the Illinois Department of Aging and the Illinois Department of Human before beginning this new role. The states with the highest tax burden are places like New York, Connecticut, Illinois, California, and Rhode Island. Spot a trend? They are all deep, deep blue.
