CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Naperville City Councilman Kevin Coyne criticizes DuPage GOP, announces run for county board – Erin Hegarty
https://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/naperville-sun/news/ct-nvs-naperville-council-coyne-dupage-county-board-st-0405-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Naperville City Councilman Kevin Coyne used a Facebook post early Wednesday to blast the DuPage County Republican Party and announce his bid to run for the DuPage County Board in District 5. Posting after Tuesday’s election votes had been counted, Naperville City Councilman Kevin Coyne wrote the DuPage County Republican organization did not do enough to get GOP candidates elected and said his county board candidacy should be seen as an effort to “stand up for conservative principals.” “I would say I think the Republican party right now is really struggling locally, and I hope to add a new voice for GOP voters,” Coyne said in a phone interview Wednesday. “I hope to be able to offer that voice on the DuPage County Board.” Coyne said he plans to run in the 2020 county election, pursuing the seat currently held by James Healy, a Naperville resident who has been on the county board since 1996. Seats held by District 5 board members Sadia Covert and Dawn DeSart are not up for election until 2022. In his post on his Naperville City Councilman Facebook page, Coyne said the DuPage GOP had “another embarrassing showing” in the most recent election cycle. “While the DuPage Democrats’ local leadership organize candidate forums, canvassing drives and social media initiatives throughout DuPage County, our DuPage GOP does what it usually does … nothing,” Coyne wrote. “Our once great DuPage GOP organization has become a shell of its former self. “The DuPage GOP has successfully handed both our County and the City of Naperville over to the Illinois’ Democratic Party. I am unwilling to let this stand!” Coyne repeated the criticism Wednesday. “The party around here was in power for a very long time and I don’t think ever adapted to the way in which politics has changed. The results for GOP folks have been very damaging.” Coyne said he made the post on his official Naperville City Council page because he thought it important to let people who follow local politics know of his plans to run for the county board. The post had drawn more than 50 comments as of Wednesday morning, many criticizing Coyne for talking about partisan politics when the council is elected as a nonpartisan body. “I will present a platform focused on reducing the size of government, reducing real estate tax levies and protecting LIFE … both as a supporter of pro-life initiatives and as a supporter of our constitutional right to bear arms,” Coyne wrote in the Facebook post. “I look forward to keeping my supporters abreast of my platform and to fighting for pro-life and small government reforms in DuPage County,” the post said. “We are better than what we have shown in recent elections. Republican voters in DuPage County need someone that will stand up for conservative principals! I ask conservative voters in DuPage County’s District 5 to give me the chance to be their voice. Much more to come….”)

https://www.dailyherald.com/news/20190403/naperville-councilman-bashes-dupage-gop-announces-county-board-candidacy
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A Naperville City Council member, unhappy with what he called a lack of aggression from the DuPage County Republican Organization in recent elections, took to Facebook early Wednesday to slam the party and announce his candidacy for DuPage County Board. Kevin Coyne, a business attorney who has served on the council since 2015, posted on his city council Facebook page that he’s tired of seeing local Democrats lead candidate forums and social media initiatives while Republicans stand on the sidelines. “Our once great DuPage GOP organization has become a shell of its former self,” Coyne wrote around 2 a.m. “It does nothing to support local or State R candidates.” Coyne said he will offer a new voice and perspective to Republican voters next November when he runs for the DuPage County Board District 5 seat currently held by attorney James Healy of Naperville. Healy did not return a call seeking comment Wednesday. Several of Coyne’s followers were quick to criticize him for discussing partisan politics while he sits on the historically nonpartisan city council. Others praised him for taking a stand. Reached Wednesday, Coyne doubled down on his social media comments. “I think the Republican Party around here was in place and successful for so long that I just don’t think they ever had to adapt to the new times with social media,” Coyne said. “I just think the general manner in which they have been running things is outdated. They’re not aggressive enough. There’s no outreach and there’s very few social media posts. We need new energy and life in the party.” DuPage Republican Chairman Brian Krajewski did not return calls Wednesday.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Meanwhile in Wheaton, Phil Suess defeated another city councilman to become the city’s first new mayor in 12 years. He will succeed Michael Gresk, who did not seek re-election. Suess made city taxes a signature campaign issue. In each of the past four years, he’s voted against raising property taxes “at a time when the city has consistently underspent its budget, has generated higher than expected surpluses and has maintained reserves in excess of stated targets.” On Wednesday, Suess said he believes his record helped him win the election. “I have been on the council for 14 years,” he said. “I have been very consistent in my positions over that period of time. I think our ability to win this election was a reaffirmation of the things we’ve been doing.”)
