http://www.wtol.com/story/36123613/chance-the-rapper-gives-out-30k-backpacks-to-kids-at-parade
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Chance the Rapper led the way as grand marshal of the annual Bud Billiken Parade in the South Side. Chance, a native of the city’s Chatham neighborhood, donated 30,000 stuffed backpacks for children along the parade route. The parade, now in its 88th year, is a tradition meant to serve as a back-to-school send off. “This is the best thing they have every year,” said a parent on the route. Since education is the focus, funding for public schools was on the minds of parade-goers and city leaders. “Right now we are suffering in a racially discriminatory funding system that it hurts funding in our state,” said  Forrest Claypool, Chicago Public Schools CEO. And while Gov. Bruce Rauner made an appearance before the parade, he did not address the funding issue during the event. Mayor Rahm Emanuel did address the issue. “The state of Illinois has the responsibility not to just show at a parade, not just to cheer, but to actively put resources that taxpayers of the city of Chicago give the state and fund our education equitably and fairly,” Emanuel said.)

AMERICAN THINKER
— Guess who pays for those $150,000 Columbia journalism degrees? – Monica Showalter (DIERSEN: Since I became the GOPUSA Illinois Editor in 2000, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have viciously demonized me, viciously denigrated me, and viciously condemned me because neither my bachelor’s degree nor any of my three master’s degrees are in journalism. In my defense, much of what GAO Analysts do is very similar to what journalists do. I worked for GAO as an Analyst 1980-1997, the last 11 years of which at the GS-13 Step 1-10 levels, currently $94,610-$122,991. Further, much of what GAO Analysts do is similar to what IRS Revenue Officers do. I worked for IRS as a Revenue Officer 1971-1980, the last 5 1/2  years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $79,563-$90,173.)
http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2017/08/guess_who_pays_for_those_150000_columbia_journalism_degrees.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: What is questionable is the issue of who pays for the degree. President Obama put limits on repaying back student loans at the 20-year mark, meaning anyone who takes out debt at the $150,000 level is only going to be repaying a fraction of that debt. The taxpayers will pick up the remainder of the tab. Should the taxpayers be paying for that? Particularly if the journalists being turned out end up being advocacy journalists on just one side of the political spectrum? That is worth asking. Cooper makes a very important point in noting that the federal incentives for taking out high-dollar loans and the abbreviated payment obligations make high-priced, questionable-value degrees on offer inevitable at places like Columbia, writing:)

MADISON
— 5 Figures That Define the Middle Class – Sean Williams  (DIERSEN: From what I see, because the cost of living is so high in DuPage County, you need way more than “$24,173 to $72,521” to live a middle class life style in DuPage County and save for your retirement.)
http://host.madison.com/business/investment/markets-and-stocks/figures-that-define-the-middle-class/article_71955a5b-e0d6-5ebc-befc-12e6528774f0.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: 1. $24,173 to $72,521  First things first: we have to define what middle-class income actually is. According to Pew Research Center, which conducted a study on the shrinking middle class in late 2015, an individual would qualify for the middle class if he or she earned more than $24,173 in 2014 dollars, or less than $72,521. Pew’s official definition is income of between 67% and 200% of overall median household income. Back in 1971, some 80 million Americans were considered to be in the middle class, compared to 51 million Americans who were either lumped in the lower- or upper-income brackets. However, by 2015, there were 121.3 million lower- and upper-income Americans, combined (using Pew’s definition of 67% to 200% of median household income). This is compared to 120.8 million middle-income Americans. In a span of 44 years, the middle class had become the minority. . .4. Approximately 70% have less than $1,000 saved for emergencies It’s no secret that Americans aren’t good savers. The U.S. personal saving rate has dipped by more than 50% over the past five decades, and we’re saving nowhere near the recommended 10% to 15% of our paychecks. But it’ll probably shock you to see how bad the middle class is at socking away cash for emergencies. According to a survey from GoBankingRates in September 2016, 37% of persons bringing home $25,000 to $49,999 annually didn’t have a dime in savings, and another 35% had less $1,000. Similarly, 33% of the people making between $50,000 and $74,999 had $0 in savings, and 36% had less than $1,000. Essentially, 7 in 10 middle-class folks have less than $1,000 saved for emergencies, which is scary low. . .5. Debt at 122% of annual household income The middle class has also been highly proficient at racking up debt over the past two-plus decades, according to data from the Federal Reserve’s Survey of Consumer Finances, which is conducted every three years. Though debt for middle-class households hit an all-time high of 140% of annual household income in 2010, the 122% of debt relative to annual household income that middle-class households are lugging around as of 2013 still isn’t good. Comparatively, this is also nearly double the debt burden that middle-class families were contending with in 1989.)

Because I have always been a Republican, were it not for federal civil service protections, a) the Post Office would NOT have hired me in 1966 or let me work there for almost 3 years, b) IRS would NOT have hired me in 1971 or let me work there for almost 9 years, c) IRS would NOT have promoted me in 1972, 1973, or 1974, d) GAO would NOT have hired me in 1980 or let me work there for almost 18 years, and e) GAO would NOT have promoted me in 1986.)
