They blame TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois support for Pat O’Malley in the 2002 GOP Illinois gubernatorial primary for Ryan’s loss to Blagojevich. They blame my serving as a TAPROOT leader in 2002 and they blame my serving as O’Malley’s Milton Township campaign coordinator in 2002.

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Whatever happens on the GOP side doesn’t really matter. Illinois is solidly Democratic statewide. That reality has driven credible Republicans to the sidelines, leaving ballot spots to be filled by wannabes who range from unprepared dreamers to outright nuts. Republicans bear most of the responsibility for their current state of affairs. In 1994, when Republican Gov. Jim Edgar ran the state, every statewide office was held by a Republican. Corruption under Edgar’s successor — Gov. George Ryan — laid the groundwork for GOP doom. (Ironically, Ryan’s Democratic successor, Rod Blagojevich, was equally corrupt, but his sickening tenure didn’t hurt his party at all. Neither will that of soon-to-be-federal-prison-inmate Michael Madigan, the longtime Democratic speaker of the Illinois House.) Ryan’s corruption was exacerbated by rancor within GOP ranks — so-called real Republicans condemning evil RINOs — Republicans In Name Only. The fight over who is pure and who gets to decide who is pure has been politically poisonous. As a consequence, the GOP is going nowhere. Making matters even worse, GOP decline combined with ruthless Democratic gerrymandering of state and federal legislative districts has made Illinois a one-party state. The Ds don’t mind that because it serves their political self-interest. But Paul Vallas, a Democrat who has run unsuccessfully for governor and mayor of Chicago, argues that “one-party dominance imposed and perpetuated through aggressive (legislative) map manipulation” is bad both for the party and the public. He said cemented Democratic majorities “reward identity politics and stifle dissenting voices.” As a result of that “unchecked power,” Illinois’ political environment has “moved further left all the time,” in a way that favors “government expansion over economic growth.” He said lack of competition between parties has left the ruling party unaccountable for policy choices that have had bad results. They include stagnating job growth, out-migration from Illinois by higher-income earners looking for a better life elsewhere, and “dozens of tax and fee increases” since 2019 that generated billions in new revenue but did little to solve the state’s financial woes. Not enough people realize it, but Illinois is a mess that will only get messier absent changes as seismic as they are unlikely.)
