(FROM THE ARTICLE: Maryland’s strong Democratic majority seemed far away this weekend at a conference near the State House, where Republicans discussed their priorities for 2020. During speeches Saturday by elected GOP officials and party leaders, attendees booed the costly education overhaul proposal being championed by the deep-blue General Assembly, cheered raucously for President Donald Trump and poked fun at candidates seeking the Democratic presidential nomination. In between panels about how to reduce gun-control restrictions and limit access to abortion, dozens of the party faithful exchanged business cards, snapped selfies and commiserated over being conservative in a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans 2 to 1 and have a veto-proof majority in both chambers of the legislature. Republican Gov. Larry Hogan, a moderate in his party who has frequently criticized Trump, was not present at the conference hosted by the conservative website Red Maryland. Hogan’s spokesman said the governor was invited but could not attend “because of his schedule.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Members of the Navarro County Republican Executive Committee heard from candidates in contested races at a regular meeting Tuesday at the group’s headquarters in Corsicana. Candidates for Navarro County Sheriff, Pct. 3 Commissioner, Justice of the Peace Pct. 2 and Navarro County District Attorney introduced themselves to those in attendance. Sheriff Elmer Tanner received the endorsement of Texas Representative Cody Harris, “I’m honored to receive Harris’s support,” he said, “Cody understands and respects the job that we do.” “Sheriff Tanner worked closely with me during the 86th Legislative session, making sure I understood how legislation would affect the people of Navarro County.” The Palestine Republican said, “without question, Elmer Tanner is the right man for the job.” Tanner will face David Foreman in the March 3 primary. Those in attendance approved the appointments of four precinct chairs who filled for office but faced no primary challenge. Precinct Chairs are instrumental helping the Republican Party get out the vote. Republicans now have 23 of 30 Navarro County precincts filled. “It’s time to get out there and shake up our precincts,” said Bobby Vickery who was appointed to Pct. 404 “It’s extremely important that we contact every Republican and make sure they get out to vote,” said Navarro County Republican Chairman Eric Meyers. “Nearly 1,000 people move to Texas every day, we need to make sure Texas stays red.” Meyers also alerted party faithful about important upcoming dates in the “consequential 2020 election year.” The last day to register to vote in the Texas primary is Feb. 3. Anyone interested may now request a ballot by mail from the Navarro County Elections Administration Office. Any requests must be returned to the Elections Office by Feb. 21. Early voting for the primary election is from Feb. 18 to 28 at the Navarro County Annex building, 601 N. 13th Street in Corsicana. The Texas primary will be March 3. Navarro County residents will have several opportunities to hear from candidates in upcoming forums, and meet and greets. The Conservative Society of Navarro County, in conjunction with the Republican Women and the Republican Party of Navarro County, will host a federal candidate meet and greet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21 at Republican Party Headquarters, 111 W. Third Ave. in Corsicana. The Republican Women will hold a candidate forum lunch at Republican Headquarters at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28. The Corsicana Opry/ Silver Saddle Saloon will host the Republican Party of Navarro County Candidate Forum at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11. The group is finalizing plans for its March 6, Navarro County Reagan Day Dinner. The group also voted to hold the Precinct Convention at the Navarro County Courthouse on Saturday, March 14. The County Convention will be held the following week on Saturday, March 21. Republican delegates from each of Texas’s 254 counties will meet in Houston at the state convention the week of May 11-16. The Texas state Republican convention is expected to be larger than the National Republican gathering. The national convention will be in Charlotte, North Carolina in August. All other regular reports were adopted. The next meeting of the Navarro County Executive Committee will be at party headquarters in April.)
